Dave Grissom is a master. Good lord - fantastic, expressive stuff he's mining and reaching for and just absolutely nailing. His phrasing is like a horn player. Outstanding. It may sound corny, but it's like all of them are truly having a conversation and complimenting each other so well and filling in the blanks.

Damn, David Grissom's phrasing and ideas are out of this world. His playing is extremely mature, to mature for some in this comment section i'm afraid.

Great playing by both guys. Come on, Brent Mason is known for his country playing and he played a long jam without any country licks really. He's a great jazz player too it seems. Dave Grissom has some lovely licks and just shows what a great player he is here. It's a jam, it's indulgent. If you don't like jams go elsewhere.

did anybody listen to the amazing rhythm David is playing while Brent is soloing especially at the end of his first time at bat. The subtle minor cords are Robben Ford-esque in their beauty. They are both gifted players in their own right and have two different styles. It's similar to the pairing of larry Carlton and Steve Lukather. different styles but my favorite album right now. "No Substitutions Live" Check it out and you'll see what I am talking about.

One of my all time favorite songs...love it when this comes up at a jam session. And this is exactly what jamming on a good groove is all about...whether Brent had ever heard it or not is totally irrelevant...the first time I played it, I had never heard it before... It is all about diving in SOUL first and smearing what ya got all over that funky ass groove...every musician has their own taste...the spice of variety...and for me, it's just awesome watching Mr. Mason lay into something that is out of his everyday norm...I love it!!!!

I’m a huge fan of Brent Mason I have been for a long time. Recently converted to PRS guitars and got a DGT. I’m not a huge fan of David Grissom as well so this is a bonus video for me to be able to watch. As others have said, in their comments, the tonality of their respective guitars is awesome. I’m still trying to find my tone.

There's so much more the band could've done to make things more interesting for either player. When you take the music places and the band doesn't go with you it's hard. They sure didn't follow Grissom. I think both guys are great players. This doesn't show either at their best, but the world is big enough to have them both be great. Brent Mason was the best session guitar player in Nashville when the competition was fierce. Grissom is one of the best blues rock players on the planet with lots of country string bending and some jazz flavor blended in. Not either one's shining hour, but both great players.

    fascinating discussion.
I'm surprised at peoples reactions in saying that Mason was the better player. Not even close in my book.
Honestly I felt bad for Brent Mason watching this. Grissom is such an original guitar player, you hear two notes and you know its him. In this performance he came up with an elaborate improvisational theme, which he effortlessly developed and delivered with soul and inventive intensity. Cohesive beyond imagining right down to the period dive bomb at the end.
Whereas Mason, to me, sounded like a million other players caught in their single note wanderings. His playing seemed advanced intermediate and his phrases felt overly familiar. With Grissom"s huge creative force towering beside him - even in his rhythm playing.
I have been playing for 43 years, and I'm still trying to develop a voice half as unique and expressive as Grissom's. Mason is good, yes, but he's not much different than most people I have played with.

    • @guitargodkc
      @guitargodkc 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

his playing is probably familiar because he's the session guy everyone goes to. Grissom is much more adept at a blues styling whereas Mason is more accustomed to the Tele chicken pickin' country licks and straight up lead. His usual jams live in the 30 second and done realm.

I love David Grissom but his solo here is, well... not very interesting and certainly not up to par for his level of playing ability. Firstly the tune is not of a style he is as comfortable with as his usual rock blues, alt country blend, and I think he was justifiably intimidated by Brent Mason who is a Fire breathing Dragon of a maestro, and who can blaze in any style. So it's a mismatch, the tune is freakin boring harmonically, and he probably made it worse by letting Brent go first! Actually it would've been bad for him either way, prolly.

Some players are not compatible with one another. Put Mason with a chicken picker like Johnny Hiland. Put Grissom with Billy Gibbons who are actually quite similar in styles. Grissom with Hiland works but there is too much of a difference in styles between Grissom or Gibbons and Mason.

Fore their groove was worse than the others. So don't take my word as law you can count it off at any point you wish and hear it fall off go ahead and or get behind, I m aware that brent has done better I do not hear much of Mr Grissom and do know of his Master class for PRS, I feel they were just kicking chops and not studio quality just shucking

It's curious how someone's mind changes. Last year I felt that Grissom nailed it and now I feel that he is completely off the vibe of the song doing his own stuff and not playing as a band member. Completely unmusical while Brent Mason though is a country musician he tried to sticked to the real nature of the song. Like Grissom was playing dirt for making too many of his tricks that left no space to others get into the song.

Grissom should stay within his element, it otherwise shows how much he truly sucks. He should quit trying to fool the audience but most importantly. ........himself.
Funny how he tries to over power real talent with his volume knob.

Paul Irons I tend to ignore idiotic responses as it's usually pointless to talk to an imbecile but really...STFU.

Paul Irons "over power real talent with his volume knob"

BTW, the lead is supposed to be out in front of the rhythm. Get a clue.
