- This video is a 2000 Honda Civic Si 1.6L clutch installation with Gary Croyle. It was installed for free, no charge of any kind to the owner for video training purposes. For instruction bulletins and additional videos by our part number go to www.clutchtechsupport.com
This is the best clutch training I've ever watched.
I got 685,000 km out of my 1997 Honda Civic SI Coupe 5 speed, never replaced the clutch and was still going two years after I sold it, having owned it for 11 years myself.
O my god !!! My vtec-e eg5 90.000
We have the same car except mine is a DX. Now it got almost 280,000 miles. But you got 650 K miles!!! Wow!!! My only problem is the clutch release fork snapped (broke). Do you think I need to change the flywheel and clutch? Or just the broken fork? Please reply.
97? Only produced 1999-2000
No your wrong it's 96-00 for 6th Gen and 92-95 for 5th@@XxXArcangelGuzmanXxX
@@Stanced-ej8 I know I ment the 97 didnt have a si model
BEST EXPLANATION EVER! CLEAR, STRAIGHT TO THE POINT AND WELL PUT! SO PERFECT THAT A KID CAN DO IT! SOLUTE YOU!
It is normal procedure to lightly lubricate those areas, and I am also ASE certified too.
This guy on perfection clutch is executing a perfect installation, do us all a favor and keep your comments to your self.
You're the best! Perfection all of the way! You guys are the best!!!!! Can't get any better than this!!!
Thank you for responding .I don't hear any noise ,so I can exclude lost spring possibility .I drive '97 saturn 160k miles Previous owner changed side to side shifter linkage . My problem stays the same for about few months .If it gets worse and I decide invest some money in this car ,I'll keep you posted
hard to find mechanics like this who know their shit. This guy is the real deal. i wanna live near him
The problem with this transmission was more than likely the input shaft bearing in the bottom of the transmission. I've replaced them and this is the exact noise you get.
This is a great, detailed video. I'm debating whether to try servicing a clutch myself, specifically on my 2004 Accord that is shaking/shuddering when I let the clutch out in first gear. There's no slipping or any odd behavior in other gears, but the shuddering is very noticeable when starting out from a stop. Only 65k miles!
Excellent presentation. Explanation very short & sharp. Easy to understood theory & practical. Double thumbs up to Mr. Perfectionclutch for your very useful info.
I really enjoy watching your videos. I liked your way of tutorial, slow & calm. Once again a big thank you to you to gave me some useful tips... You are Professor David Einstein of modern mechanical engineers. :-)
The noise is the input shaft bearing. The input shaft spins while the car is in neutral and sitting still with the clutch pedal out (engaged) and makes noise. The input shaft doesn't spin while the clutch is pushed in (disengaged) and therefore the bearing makes no noise.
if you really listen to the noise, you are able to tell that part of the noise went away; the replacement of the bearing, clutch, and flywheel all got rid of the loose and clangy ball bearing sound but still left the friction like sound you hear at the end. in my opinion it is in fact the gear box. thanks for the video
Also, I think this was an excellent clutch job how-to vid. I know people are educated when they use a torque wrench and go in the pattern. Good job!
I love how small and light weight the clutch is in this car after doing a 12 valve cummins clutch this is much preferred haha. Cool video!
+perfectionclutch Deal! Haha don't worry I don't doubt the difficulty of the small work space on the car I just almost forgot the size difference there! I'm about to do the clutch on a 2000 civic se. The NV4500 truly is a great trans I had a blast with that truck and the best part was with the truck on some blocks, I could sit under the thing when I did the clutch! But man that flywheel had a bit of weight to it a little more then I expected.
+perfectionclutch did you need to remove the cv axle to get the trans out? I may have missed it and could one drop the trans with the car on stands or blocks if high enough?
This was a great video. Now I feel like doing a transmission rebuild for good measure.
As others have noted, the noise present is 100% input shaft bearing. A careful google search of the symptoms would have confirmed this. I had the same noise in the same car, replaced the input shaft bearing in the transmission and it went dead silent. See my video (which was a before video). That flywheel IS a candidate for resurfacing, It is a stepped flywheel and must be resurfaced accordingly, but otherwise will perform identically to a new one when done so correctly. Otherwise, good video.
Awesome video! You are a great, educated technician that knows what he's talking about and can easily communicate that with others, unlike a lot of those cavemen "mechanics" out there these days that can only say "Huh, yeah, we'll fix it for $3 billion dollars."
I watched this video before I installed my flywheel and clutch on my 91 Honda Accord with JDM H23A. I made a video too for educational purposes. Came out perfect. Did a video on it, doing the clutch bleed, can't wait to post it soon. Then the startup...
that noise you can hear is actually the INPUT SHAFT bearing in the transmission. very common on Hondas. this guy just got a new clutch and flywheel for nothing. could have least got another 1 to 2 years from that clutch
***** Regardless of it being right call or not, still educational video at end of day and was done very thoroughly. Well done.
***** great video, very educational and much appreciated!
can you explain it to me cause my 97 makes this same noise
Opening the transmission is not a joke for me, so I would do the same even if my old clutch and old flywheel are still fine.
@swagstars
That longer wrench he is using is referred to as a "Clicker" type Torque wrench.
The wrench is set by twisting the handle to the desired torque. It clicks when you have met the torque that you have set.
totally agree. bell housing side main shaft bearing. when pressing the clutch you dissengage the gearbox mainshaft. eg making noise go away. simple
I think the disc is close to the flywheel. Adjust the free play raising the bite point a bit might help
I'm saying input shaft bearing. A noise with a disengaged clutch is the TO or pilot bearing. A noise with an engaged clutch and trans in N is an input bearing. Honda trans usually have to be split open to change that.
What a great video. this helped me remove and install my own transmission after a full rebuild. thanks
That "noise" is the cold air intake, put the stock intake back on and I bet the "noise" will go away lol ... The air noise happened after my friend installed an intake, sounds pretty cool I think.. Nice clutch install vid though!!
Have a nice day..
I'm a dumbass for not using a working torque wrench. The one I borrowed from my neighbor did not click, and 3 of the pressure plate bolts snapped inside the flywheel. Now I've gotta wait for the next paycheck. >:/
I learned from your lesson. Thanks for posting.
I have a 2003 pontiac vibe (rebadged toyota matrix) 5 speed that has 210,000 miles on it. It still drives perfectly and has never had a clutch replacement. You just have to be nice to your clutches, or maybe its just because of how brilliant toyota is at making cars ;D
That noise is the input shaft bearing for the manual transmission and it going bad is a very common problem with this generation of Honda Civic.
Perfection clutch i bought from advanced auot parts is no good, installed and lasted only one year, Exedy clutch lasted over 13 years, still good,
This noise is very typical (in my experience with older D & B series Hondas 1988-2000).. The 6 that i have owned and a few of my friends all make/made that sound in some degree.. I have personally had many-many years of driving with this sound and never had a single failure yet.. It's definitely a bearing on the input shaft but i wish i knew more about it... Great videos by the way!
I have the same noise in my 2002 Honda civic SE sport! Good video now I know what's the problem.
莫
Makes me want to get a Honda again.
Damb this shop is legit they know what they are doing
NO MAN U DID a great job i just hear that all day it was a joke but u give alotta great info so please dont stop u learned alot from ya video buddy peace ! keep up the good work ! 8 thumbs up from me
Super helpful. Thanks a billion.
For me I would thank a trillion.
Its a exedy stock replacement kit from EBAY. My civic is all stock, no mods of any kind. I didn't have to use the feeler gauge, the dowels where obviously missing and I installed them yesterday. I supported the engine and tranny during the job.
Refilled tranny with OEM honda transmission oil. Let me know what you think of the clutch kit I got?
Very informative tutorial... thank you, will be doing this replacement this weekend
so the customer underwent a costly clutch+flywheel change for no reason...and he'll prob do that again when he changes the gearbox...nice
***** ok my bad
i love watching this, I want to learn how to fix cars :)
excellent demonstration. thank you for the post.
honestly they should supply more high-temp grease. more likely it aka the clutch throwout bearing can fail from not properly from not being lubed up properly
Oh that's awesome, it was a great video, I was just curious.
I have the same problem in my civic ex is it okay to just keep driving with this noise? Replacing my clutch soon since my clutch is no good Exedy oem is your best bet from what Ive heard for daily driving 🤗🙏🏼
Good video, clear instructions
Definitely input shaft bearing. Might as well replace or rebuild the whole transmission.
These guys are great thanks
Theres 15min I won't ge back. Probably 100's of dollars in parts and no fix?? Great Job!!
When noise disappears when the clutch is depressed, isn't that the Input shaft bearing?
A release bearing if I'm not wrong actually rotates when the clutch pedal is depressed and stops when it is disengage from the pressure plate, thus the clutch.
Excellent,excellent video..
why didn't you replace the input shaft bearing?
Strange, I think he just lubed the old release bearing. I always change the lot, dualmass flywheel, pressure plate, friction plate, release bearing and the slave cylinder. In my car the slave cylinder is a unit with the release bearing.
had the same problem with a honda fit/jazz input shaft bearing is worn and needed to be replaced we did not change clutch though proper diagnosis
Exedy makes a good clutch kits, you should payabout $250 for a kit (clutch disc, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing) You can get them in Autozone. Your choice of mechanic or DIY. It takes around 6 hours for a first timer if you DIY.
Hope this helps
I changed my clutch about a year ago it actually easier than it look
Just the only thing I had trouble was putting the tanny back on.
I have not started doing the same, now you are scaring me.
great info gary thanks
Focky change your clutch fork it will be warped so it wont be engaging/disengaging the clutch properly hense the juddering suction feel
After getting underneath the Civic again and manually pulling the shift rod bars back and forth (there are two long metal rods...one attached underneath to the shifter which attaches to the transmission (that is intact, actuating gears when moved); the other long rod appears to attach underneath to the base of the whole shift assembly-- the other end to a chassis bushing near the transmission. I'm not sure what the 2nd rod even does, but when manually moving it, it appears very loose at the base of the shift assembly (which is itself moving), and loose at the bushing end. A lotta play in the 2nd rod (really a long metal bar). Since messing around with the linkage underneath, the car will no longer go into gear without depressing the clutch. But, while in any gear, releasing the clutch, the RPMs only decrease slightly. It never comes close to stalling. Really don't know what I did to change the symptom. Before it would go into gear with no clutch (abnormal), now it will not (normal). Any ideas, sir?
Hi perfectionclutch, is this type of clutch a push-type? I have a 2006 Subaru WRX and this vehicle seems to be the one I should follow to install my clutch
(generally speaking).
Oh yeah should be good buddy
17mm 12 point socket, remove bolts with an impact or regular wrench
How do you bleed the clutch? Not sure if I still have air or maybe bad master cylinder. But I’ll have a hard pedal after bleeding then after driving for a bit it gets a little soft. Sometimes feels stuff again for a bit. Gets hard to engage into 1st once car warms up
What damage can happen to transmission if you drive 500 miles without the dowel pins? I did not realize they werent there, took it back out and put them in and it wants to grind in second, air seems all out. The trans is new not rebuilt, thanks for your time
***** Hello, thanks for commenting, the car is1995 honda civic dx with everthing from flywheel ,clutch, to trans, mastr and slave all new. I dont pull it into gear hard when shifting so I don't get the grind noise but goes into second only rough, I feel it threw the shifter, and its not smooth like other gears. Clutch pedal has been moved previously up or down before I owned it, would be nice to know exactly where pedal height is too, the haynes manuals are not picture exact, and I can not find a video of 92-95 civic showing the pedal asembly so I can see where the pedal rest with foot off,(how much of the pedal height stop bolt, or cruise control switch if has cruise control is showing how many threads when contacting pedal for correct oem height). Too low or high will be a problem, and not sure if its that also what could be causing it, oh and can slave be blocked at any position, fully pushed in etc. Thanks again sir for your time.
***** Thanks Gary, that video I've watched before and is a excellent one. In the video the white rubber stop on the pedal hits that bottom bolt just like mine, I'm tryen to find out now how many threads are shown on the tip of the bolt that make contact with that white rubber stop, the bolt goes threw that permanent bolt mounted to assembly, should be a thread to 5 or 6 showen when touching the white pad? That would give me the oem height so I then would have the correct pedal stroke which would let me no my disc should be completly undun from pressure plate and flywheel so it will make smooth shifts. 92-95 civic and 96-2000 civics have lil differences in pedal assemblys so I havent found a video showing that actual bolt to see the threads exposed when contacting white pad in video. I'll try to do a video showing it in my civic, but I do understand the adjustments to master just the height on pedal will let me know if i'm getting full clutch plate release. Thanks sir i really appreciate you taking the time with me
Actually, I have a few questions.
Where is a good place to buy a clutch from?
How much should a clutch cost to replace?
How long can a job like this take?
I have a 1995 civic 1.5l, if that changes much.
If I can shift into any gear, engine on, no grinding, not even depressing clutch pedal...is the clutch shot? Shift linkage appears intact, slave cylinder action o.k. Happened right after getting towed home on a battery failure.
It was a tow truck event. Before the tow the clutch was fine, afterward nothing. The shift linkage underneath appears fine. Weird coincidence?
Great video!
awsome video. i have the same noise in my car. was hoping this video would let me know how to fix it.... guess ill never know what it is
So for the info. There's a possibility he did fix the problem when he changed the flywheel and pilot bearing. Both the input shaft bearing and the pilot bearing make about the same noise when worn. Obviously the input shaft bearing will gradually become louder and sound worse but. I have the same issue. Didn't fix it yet but I put a stethoscope on my trans and the noise sounds louder where the pilot bearing is than the input shaft bearing. We shall see. He still should've mentioned what happene
My civic does the exact same and i was going to fit a clutch kit to get rid of the noise, it's got 118,000 on it now. Great vid, but should i try a clutch kit first because i have a feeling it's the release bearing on mine as it's hasn't had a clutch for a few year/20-30,000 mile.
i just was joking my man .i drive tower[standup] all day i hear it 8-10 hrs a day but gj man cause u know a tower in reverse all day so i always hear that beeper in my sleep lol
i have a honda civic vtec with same peoblem but i took it to a shop they said they dont know what is the problem untill they open the clutch but i can see the honda u changed the clutch it still had the noise so do u think my car is the gear box or ist the clutch making that noise if u can tell me please please by the way i love the video the way every thing u do its best thanks
It's input shaft bear, with gearbox out you should feel it
I have a question, I just replaced my throwout bearing, pilot bearing, pressureplate and clutch. As I was driving home, I heard a clicking sound, as I accelerated clicking got faster, once i started to break and put the clutch into neutral, the clicking sound went away. What can be the issue?
You didn't fix the issue. The grinding sound is still there as shown at the end. The issue is the input shaft bearing. You have to take apart the transmission to put in a new input shaft bearing.
Is it even possible for the pilot bearing and clutch to be misaligned and still get the gearbox on? or does it HAVE to be aligned to physically get it on?
the technician forgot to show the tough job it is to remove the flywheel... a special tool is needed or to lock it in place in order to remove the bolts. I would have resurfaced the flywheel my self but since the pilot bearing needed replacing might as well replace the cheap flywheel, maybe 150bux for an aftermarket OEM size part.
Nice tutorial. Thanks a lot
Would this training work for my 1997 Honda Civic DX 2-door Coupe?
Thanks for your reply!
I asked because my truck is doing the same thing after the clutch was changed (full Exedy kit). It never made noise before
At some point during the reassembly, the transmission input shaft was under thrust pressure due to initial misalignment. Is that detrimental to the gear system?
Thank you for a great video! I have Honda Civic 2000 1.4i and got its clutch done recently. Since the clutch change, the car sounds louder, with black smoke and idle issues and today I noticed oil leak under and around the engine. Can you please suggest what that might be the cause of this?
Sounds like your problem became bigger. Now I see, changing clutch is not a joke. Thanks for posting.
How do you verify the old clutch isn't an aftermarket part or a fake original part that contains asbestos?
Ahh I see. Still should have fixed it while the box was out though as it was an incorrect diagnosis from the off. Maybe they do things differently over there or something, but over here the guy pulling your gearbox would be fully experienced in all aspects of mechanics, gearboxes included.
very good video!
Hi Gary,
Last year i bought a Fiat Punto mk1. The car is 16 years old and it was a great car to drive. Until yesterday: the car broke. When i was waiting for the traffic light I heard a loud scratching and peeping noise coming from under the hood while the pedal was down. I drove off as normally, but 20 meters on i couldn't shift anymore. It felt like it didnt fully release, so i pulled over. There i noticed an awful smell. What do i have to replace?
Would like to hear from you.
Thank you.
OWNED
Also when cap was off reservoir my friend pushed on the clutch. I don't think that would do anything but I have herd that it can ruin the cylinder
It is clear you understand clutch theory. You presented the information well. I also learned something new with the channel steel on the flywheel teeth. Thanks! I also like to wiggle the alignment tool a little. Did you take the alignment tool out so the torque wrench would clear? Some other reason? I'll be sure to look for your brand when I need clutch related parts!
Will anyone answer this question? Why did my clutch release fork broke (snapped)? A 278,000 miles 1997 Honda Civic DX.
Nice video on clutch installation. Very good. However, I don't think I would allow you to pay me to diagnose or fix any problem I would have with a Honda. Did you charge the customer for the new flywheel, bearing rebuild and labor? If you did, how do you sleep at night? When i watched the end of that video I was astonished, not that you screwed up diagnosis, but that you actually posted it on TH-cam. It pays a little more if you do it right the first time, know what I mean??
BTW, with the Civic in 1st gear, I can push and move the car with some effort...in neutral, very easily.
Went ot a local honda dealership and got a pair of those dowels and transmission gear noise went away. AWESOME. If it was for this video, I would still be guessing what the heck is wrong.
@chucklzslowV6 same here my teggy neeeded a throwout bearing.... same exact noise,,,noise of death and eventually when i took my foot off the clutch it died. bought a new clutch kit came in the mail yesterday!
First of all, thanks for the video. But, how would I stop the flywheel from turning if the engine is out of the car? If you could help I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
prob was still getting noise after they were done due to, that stuff takes a couple 1000K miles to get broken in and used to the oil it will make that noise with new parts liek that espiecially bearings, good fix though pretty nice
Me neither. It makes them look like they don't know what they are doing. They could have pulled the box back out and did it right, and they could include that in the video too. it would have been useful information then. I hope the owner wasn't billed for the misdiagnosis.
my torque wrench is inch pounds, how much should i put it at for the flywheel?
This video is why I'm glad I don't drive manual. No clutches to replace. :]
its the transmission i had the same problem in my 98 i pulled my trans and a ball bearing fell out of the transmission and the transmission was torn to pieces release bearing was shot to shit and the fly wheel was toast and the clutch was fried since you replaced all that stuff minus the transmission obviously its the transmission hope it gets fixed soon
I know you said you guys are just a clutch company, but I have a question. When you were doing final tightening on that flywheel, the engine seemed to move a lot. Is that normal?
The noise we hear when you release the clutch was the mainshaft bearing, But why do you change the clutch set ?
Sounds like the bearings on the main shaft inside the transmission. Common issues with Civics.
When you take out the trans do you need to put a bar in where the drive shafts came out. I read that in the workshop manual but havent seen anyone do it on their youtube videos? My car is a 1990 Nissan Pulsar.
