I am a middle and high school orchestra teacher. I forwarded your lesson immediately to my cello students. Since I teach four instruments, I don't have the opportunity to teach as in depth as I would like. This video is an answer to a prayer. Thank you!

Awesome! As a beginning cellist, the movement of the fingers, wrist, and elbow is so hard to understand. Although I’ve watched many cellists play, and I’m aware of the change in their fingers/hand from upbow to downbow, I’ve never been able to replicate this movement at home. The details you provide about the positions/roles of each finger, the flexibility of the wrist, and the movement from the elbow are so helpful-and you can be sure I will be doing pinkie pushups and spiders later on today!

As a violinist for decades, I discovered the pinky surfs on top and a little off to the side and It is kind of used as a rudder. My grip is a commanding hold for control. The index is a bit proned to use for controlled pressure for the desired tone. I also play cello and this is the same hold that I use for the fiddle. Great tips for the bow...thanx.

Very very good, being aware of flexibility, anathomy... I loved and appreciated your approach immensely!!! I just picked up my cello dream that has been sleeping for 55 years... extra important then to stretch and be aware! My thumb is stiff from damage though, so I find my own way of placing it on the bow.

Terrific lesson, thank you! I'm a professional guitar player but I've got an 8 year old violin prodigy so I've been playing violin for a couple years but I've always wanted to play the cello. And today is the day I finally got one! It's so beautiful and I'm so excited! But anyway, this was a good bit of info regarding bow hold and such as I had no idea how I was supposed to do that. Thank you and I'll follow and keep up with your videos!

You mentioned steering the bow across the strings w aid of the pinkie, it seems I've always used the contact point for support and steering is necessary for this though it also creates stiffness and tension. Thanks Johannes I'm always grateful these resources are always available. Getting started on these RH exercises right now. .

Thank you so much for this lesson! As a returning cello student and player, there is muscle memory, but mindfully holding the bow like when you first start to learn is so important no matter how many years you have play. And these finger and wrist exercises are fantastic and will definitely bring back the strength and agility of my bowing arm and hand 😊.

How about a class focused on intonation? So many talk about the "inner ear". But few really explain its function in relation to the left hand finger placement. And, when it is remembered that the left hand makes no sound the right hand has a role to play in intonation as well. This so called "binary input" when coordinated results in scale notes that are in tune. A miracle!

Thank you so much for this lesson! My daughter has been playing cello for 5 year. Although she is a pretty advance cello player but she hasn't been able to get the correct bow hold despite having been taught by 3 different cello teachers. She is currently playing with a straight thumb bow hold as you demonstrated for the earlier teen years. She wants to change her bow hold to the bend thumb but she just can't apply the strength to create the same sound as when she plays with the straight thumb. She feels very frustrated. Do you mind sharing your experience of how you change your straight thumb bow hold to the current bend bow hold? Thank you!

Im getting back to playing my cello. I've been told its impossible for me to ever sound smooth now. I have severe Rheumatoid Arthritis along with Chronic Still's disease. I can no longer hold my bow right and I sound like a cow in labor, lol.
My hubby is gonna put some rubber on their like you just showed. He is also picking up a pool noodle to cut off a small piece, he is hoping to help me hold the bow correctly with it. Right now, my grip gets so stiff due to the joints locking up in my fingers that he has to physically peel my fingers off the bow after I practice.
Im still using my old starter bow. But hopefully at the first of May we're gonna get a new one.
Do you have any bow recommendations for someone like me? And do you know of anything else I can try to make me smoother? I'm NOT gonna stop relearning my cello just because these diseases are interfering. So I'm starting to reach out for suggestions.

A fine point, but you sir have long slender fingers. Can't visualize Casals doing these exercises with the same alacrity. Also, might be a good idea when performing these movements to use a second bow, one enroute to getting re-haired. The finger tips often touch the hair during these maneuvers and deposit a great deal of oil on them.

I can’t seem to get a decent hold on the bow no matter what I do. Maybe the shape of the bow I’m using doesn’t work with my hand or something but there doesn’t seem to be any finger position good enough. Every position is uncomfortable and not secure. 🤷🏻‍♂️
