I’ve been watching a lot of his masterclasses lately and I must say, I love how he expertly mixes musical inspirational ideas with raw technical advice. Most teachers at that level don’t bother to address those issues and thereby don’t really enable the student to bridge the gap between the concept and the ways by which it will materialize on the instrument.
3:20 Rachmaninoff Sonata for Cello and piano op. 19 III Movement 9:44 Gautier Capuçon 1:10:39 Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor Op. 85 IV Mov 1:21:30 Gautier Capuçon
MuDang
I love Gautier’s playing and teaching, but why does his cello always sound like it’s coming through a tin can in these masterclass videos? The mic set up? The strings? The soundpost set up? ... Not meant as an insult, obviously he’s a great player and I’ve got nothing but respect. Just curious about why it sounds so choked.
very superficial and unconvincing. To play this music you need to know something about Russian philosophy and about the life of Rachmaninoff himself. Without this, the construction of phrases will be erroneous. It is also impossible to construct a musical phrase with only a cellist and not work with a pianist. Let me remind you that this is a sonata for piano and cello.
From another point of view, sometimes they're asked to do that last minute, or need to substitute the previous pianist pronto. Sometimes they don't earn a penny or are not having a good day. Being an accompanist is not easy task, and if you're a pianist yourself you know that. However, I'm not trying to invalidate your commment.

Noticed the same. It's the mic on his jacket that distorts the sound
I think it’s just his cello’s sound, it projects a lot

The pianist has played numerous wrong notes in the Elgar - such a shame.
