Freight Train Stall on Porcupine Hill - Re Upload.

  • I've had requests over the years to re upload the original series of this into one video. During a recent hard drive clean up I found the files so decided to put them up as one. I've also included the scenes from earlier in the afternoon before the actual stall.
    At the time El Zorro had just started to lease anything and everything they could get their hands on, including these loco's that had been preserved. Up until this point, they would run the occasional passenger special, but putting them back to work hauling revenue freight for the first time in about 10 + years, and also during summer, any mechanical issues became obvious fairly quickly. Failures in the early days of these operations were quite common.
    Seymour Rail Heritage Centres S303-B74-T357-T378 on 9062 ELZ grain from Woorinen were already having over heating issues earlier in the afternoon going by the open engine room doors, and later on during the climb up the 1 in 57 ( 1 .75% ) Porcupine Hill, T378 decided it had finally had enough and shut down, leaving S303-B74-T357 to try and get the 28 loaded grain hoppers over the crest on their own.
    Needless to say this caused quite a bit of disruption to the regular passenger services to/from Bendigo while this took place. Wed 23/12/09

    The trick is not to rev the f!.,.ck out of the motors and overheat everything but to gently keep power on as this driver did to defeat the stall. Well done to the train crew!

In the cab you can see a red light (it is on the control stand which you can't see) bathing the interior of the cab that corresponds to the prime-mover being controlled to stop wheelslip. EMD as all ways at that time built some of the world's best Locomotives. These old girls, don't know the me meaning of quit, still going strong after all these decades. Great video, thanks. The E, and F units were some of my favorite engines.

    You can actually hear how hot it is at the 2-minute mark. Notice how the locomotives sound muffled until they're in extreme close proximity.
    On the other end of the spectrum, in 40 below temperatures (Fahrenheit or Centigrade - it doesn't matter, because it's where the scales cross), the amount of treble from even distant sounds can be ear-piercing. Things located several miles away can sound like they're across the street.

    I remember many many years ago a EMD Locomotive stalled on the Dandenong line and it held up a Blue Harris passenger train between Springvale and Westall. These Locomotives would not be able to handle going over Skyrail, they're so sluggish, haven't got enough grunt.

    That’s sounds like an Emd 567. Did not know that that engine was so popular for export.

    • @muir8009
      @muir8009 หลายเดือนก่อน

      8 and 12 cyl versions were especially popular. 16 cyl less so. A lot of the export market was central and south America, Australasia, and a smattering for some European countries.
      The non-Euro countries tended to be of many different track gauges, some of which used lighter weight rail, and the lesser cylinder versions were lighter than the 16's.
      When the SD40's were converted to metre gauge (a shade over 3') they were converted to bolstered quad 4 wheel trucks (so they look like two 8 wheel trucks) to keep the weight down.
      Stock US standard gauge diesels were actually relatively heavy, for example the contemporary emd F7 and export G12. F7 1500hp 16cyl 118 tons, G12 1425hp 12cyl 78 tons, so keeping the weight down was quite a priority (as a comparison the contemporary SBB AE 6/6 weighed the same as the F7, but had 5,770 hp, the slightly later BLS AE 8/8 at 160 tons and 8,800hp).
      However the weight figures can be deceptive: train heating boilers weren't present in emd export models, in colder climes separate train heating vans were supplied in the consist, adding extra train weight so almost negating the lighter locomotive weight, although this could occur seasonally, and, of course, weight was spread over a larger footprint (very important to keep the civil engineers happy, which is why sometimes on lighter built lines you'll see runner wagons between double headed locomotives: at critical areas the weight of impact isn't all on one short area.
