- Our pards from the Co. D, 5th Minnesota Infantry Living History Group host this year opening day at Fort Abercrombie on the Red River in North Dakota.
This weekend we are representing the 10th US Co. D Infantry as they garrisoned the fort in the summer of 1867. During this period, the order was published for infantry to cease utilizing the current tactics and switch over to Bvt. Major General Emory Upton’s newly adopted Infantry Tactics.
Known historically as "the Gateway to the Dakotas," Fort Abercrombie was the first permanent United States military fort established in what was to become North Dakota. It was also the only post in the area to be besieged by Dakota (Sioux) warriors for more than six weeks during the US-Dakota War of 1862. During the conflict, Minnesota Volunteer soldiers manned the fort when area settlers sought shelter there. The "regular" U.S. Army soldiers had been withdrawn during the Civil War and had been replaced by the Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. The fort was not protected by blockhouses or a palisade during the siege, but these defensive structures were constructed soon afterward. [www.history.nd.gov/historicsi...]

the pickles were an interesting fact!
I've considered Lemons to be good candidates for Vitamin C, but Pickles were a lot more common in the north land.
This is cool!
Thanks for the comment pard. I'd love to see more of the original building on this site rebuilt.
@@1stminnsharpshooters341 that would be cool!
Is there a recruitment website or anything I’m interested in joining the 1st Minnesota Sharpshooters but can’t find the proper information?

Pickles and sauerkraut to deal with scurvy? 🤔
Even google believes this to be true "Not only are they delicious but they're packed full of minerals, vitamins and good bacteria. Pickles have a high concentration of vitamins such as Vitamin K, Vitamin C and Vitamin A, this is due to water being drawn out of the pickles by the salty brine they are pickled in." - hope you are doing well pard.
There is a cure for scurvy?
prevention for .. I always associated lemons for this
