    When the fourth one crawled upside down onto her back under the substrate, my heart squeezed me. That was soooooo cuuuuute!!! Her lil orange booty, then her green paws! Loved it! The whole video was great ❤ I gotta tell y'all, I don't have an OBT, but I'm not against getting one. My two favorite colors are green and orange, so adding one or two of these beauties to my collection is definitely not out of the question 😊 This is off topic of this video, but I rehoused my T. Ockerti this afternoon and it was a total sweetheart. I was bundled up against airborne hairs and it never kicked once. I was so happy that I literally told the spider, "Tom and Billie would be so proud of you, little one"! 😂 I just had to share that with y'all 😊 Enjoy your winter break!

    I have the TCF and the RCF and both are quite shy! I’ve personally never gotten a threat posture from my OBTs. At the exotic pet store I work at, I’ve only seen OBTs throw threat postures twice and both were when they were startled. Even though most of these OBTs were housed in small deli cups! I definitely agree that it does depend on the specimen because that is true for any species :)

    Tom, I so enjoy your videos. You and less than a handful of other creators have shown me a calm, sane way to care for tarantulas. The fear filled, jump scares and screaming videos (in my opinion) only show not what to do or how not to handle these creatures. Coming from a position of extreme arachnophobia (I have fainted over a picture of a spider) the calm handling that exemplifies the beauty of these creatures (and gives them the respect that they deserve) is genius. I have learned to appreciate and respect these creatures instead of absolute fear. My goal is to absolutely be able to have one as a pet to continue my education into their world. I have learned that they are no different than a tank of fish as pets. You do everything possible to give them their best life. In turn, as their caregiver, you get to observe them and admire a unique part of our world. Thanks for all that you do! Blessings!

      Thank you so very much for the kind words. That's exactly why we do this. As someone who used to be terrified of spiders and tarantulas, I hate when people make them out to be "nasty" or "aggressive". We really strive to show them as they are. Thank you again, and Happy New Year!

    I had my first P. murinus when they first came into the hobby, which was late 80s in the UK. I ended up with a small collection of them as other keepers were finding them too 'aggressive'. In all these cases, they were being kept in fairly bare conditions, with little substrate. I always provided a hide and deep substrate. I never had an issue with them and they are one of my favourite species.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow, talk about experience! Yeah, even when I got into the hobby, folks were all keeping them in cramped, terrestrial enclosures. I also think that many of the ones back then were wild caught (WC tend to be more defensive). Thank you so much for chiming in!

    Haha. I’m going to have to remember “Terrestrial Plus.” That’s perfect.
    My Cyriocosmus ritae sling (allegedly fossorial/terrestrial) spends most of its time climbing around the sides/top and has staunchly refused to burrow, opting for web tunnels.
    I tried less dirt and more vertical space in the same size enclosure. No good so far. Think it needs more space/height. Idk. It’s my only “problem child” out of 7 spiders so I think it’s the enclosure itself. 🤔
    Also LOVE the OBT. Really want one someday, they’re beautiful. The reputation (and the OW thing) has been my biggest hold up so I love videos like this. 🖤

      Hello, Kaiyo! Haha Yeah, that term seems to cause less of a stir than "semi arboreal." And there are always those oddballs that don't do what they are supposed to. haha As for the OBT, I've kept 10 over the years, and I've never had an issue with them at all. Thanks!

    Hi Tom, the video is like a Christmas present! I can never get enough of Pterinochilus murinus. The four little ones are so cute. Of course, it's a pity that you didn't get the "brown" color form back then, but the four spiders are still beautiful. I always appreciate how you show people out there that this species is not mean or aggressive. On the contrary, they are much calmer than many Asian tarantulas. And as you eloquently put it, one has to give them space, show calmness and relaxation in handling them, then there are no problems. I've commented a lot under your videos about this. They remain, for me, among the most beautiful tarantulas! By the way, I have a water bowl in the terrarium for absolutely every dry-living tarantula, and they all drink regularly from it, whether it's Aphonopelma chalcodes, Pterinochilus murinus, Monocentropus balfouri, Augacephalus sp., and so on. That is immensely important, and it's great that you always address that!
    I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
    Regards, Chris

      Hey, Chris! I hope that you had an awesome Christmas and Happy New Year! Yeah, I'm still bummed about that. During the time when I thought that I had the brown ones, I passed up on other opportunities to get them. And I agree completely; they seem to be much more calm and predicatable than some of the Asian species. And thanks for chiming in on the water dishes! I see my arid species drinking more than any others. Again, have a great holiday...and thank you!

    Also I listen to your podcast and was wondering your thoughts about tarantula behavior and their quote “personalities”. I know people tend to anthropomorphize them but Ive noticed and I’m sure you have too that they each have their own quirks lol. I’m so curious and fascinated by these creatures.

    Hey Tom! Great video as always. I love the adorable glowing eyes at 6:57. What little cuties you have! You and Billie are too funny! Man, that little threat pose was just so cute! If you read my comment on your GBB video, you'll know the story of my background with this species, but tl;dr my first tarantulas included 3 P. murinus slings. All 3 were male, and since no one is working with the RCF anymore, I watched two of them wander around until they died before finally finding a home for my last male. This was very hard for me and has caused me to be unable to keep any mature males due to how psychologically upsetting it was to watch them go in this way. I also saw none of them until they matured with the exception of rehouses. These were the shyest spiders I've ever had by a long shot. I literally had no idea if they were even alive for most of the time I kept them. They didn't eat particularly well and spent all of their time hiding. This is fine; as you know I *love* my pet holes, but I definitely bought into the hype and was expecting little balls of fire and instead got 3 boxes of webbed up dirt that I was fairly certain housed dead spiders. I'm not sure if I did something wrong with their care but they were honestly just shy spiders that had no interest in coming out. Even my shy Haplopelma sp. will poke their legs out at night so this was just not what I was expecting from these spiders. Thankfully, I discovered Harpactira cafreriana, which in my opinion is an even more beautiful and very visible spider, and I am currently raising two, suspect male and female. Again, I have no issue with spiders you don't see, in fact I kinda prefer those because when you DO see them it's like seeing a unicorn or finding a shiny Pokemon or something, but literally not seeing them at all in the entire time I kept them (until they matured, and then I just got to watch them slowly die...) was somewhat off-putting. I didn't get to see them live, I only got to watch them die, and these were some of my first ever tarantulas, so that definitely did a little psychological damage, lol.
    I do have a little vent to add here which is completely unrelated to the video, but I figure it'll be easier for you to find here than buried in your bulk email. I've noticed keepers seriously overfeeding their t's lately, and while this has been an issue since I started lurking in 2015/2016, it seems to be getting exponentially worse. I personally only feed my spiders if the abdomen is smaller than the carapace. I have about 50 tarantulas in my collection and I think I fed maybe 10 of them tonight. The exception is itty bitty slings I will feed weekly until they hit around 1 inch. I just see these spiders that look like ticks on Facebook groups and it causes spiritual pain. In my opinion they do not need to eat that much. I hear people talk about feeding them daily or every other day or even weekly and I really don't agree with that PERSONALLY. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own feeding schedule but this has become a major pet peeve for me. I think people fail to realise a few things here. The first is that spiders are not like dogs and cats and do not need to eat daily or even weekly. The second is that a spider that is that, for lack of a better term, obese, is at much greater risk for health issues, falls, impaction, etc. I think a weekly feeding schedule for a healthy adult tarantula is too aggressive. When I tell you the spiders I see look like their abdomens are just giant water balloons, I'm not exaggerating. I get how much fun it is to feed spiders but that's why we get more than one, lol. I just don't think it's healthy for them to be sooooo gigantic. I feel like I'm coming off like a grumpy old man yelling at people to get off my lawn but I think I've been in the hobby long enough to be able to pick up when certain practices may not be in the spider's best interest. I also recently lost my beautiful P. arboricola to impaction, and seeing her abdomen so bloated was pretty traumatic, so now any other spider that appears similarly bloated or overfed causes deep anxiety. I worry greatly about the possible correlation between overfeeding and long term health issues. I have a beautiful natanicharum who is looking quite large and I haven't fed her since September and she's doing fine. I haven't fed my E. murinus in gosh knows how long due to her looking a healthy weight. I know you say "choose a schedule that works for you" but I truthfully don't think feeding should be a scheduled thing, I think once they are adults or even juveniles in some cases it should be an "as needed" thing. I understand wanting to get them out of the fragile sling stage but a healthy adult, in my opinion and experience, really does not need to eat as much as we feed them and I think we're doing a disservice to our animals by overfeeding.
    Thanks again for being my spider therapist.
    Merry Christmas

      Merry Christmas, Charlotte! I hope that you had a great one and got everything you wanted. :) I've been dying to do this video, because I really wanted to show that they do NOT have to be crazy and defensive. I hate when folks rile them up for views. And I have no issue with the ones that you can't see either. I just bought four more fossorial species, so that's a good thing, eh? haha And it's funny that you mention the fat spiders, as I've had several folks comment on my videos lately that mine are "too thin" or that I "need to feed them more." It's gotten a bit irritating. I think that a lot of us (myself included) overfeed them early on. They are fun to feed, and it's one of the highlights of the hobby. We also tend to fixate on them more when we first start, which means more feedings. However, as I've spent more time in the hobby, I've really eased off with my feeding schedule. Some of my earlier and faster growing tarantulas died of old age earlier than I had anticipated, which could be to my feeding schedule. Hmmmm...we might have a podcast topic here! :) Happy New Year, buddy! I hope that you have a great one.

      @@TomsBigSpidershey Tom! Just listened to the new podcast and wanted to clarify a few points. First of all, I’m always touched when you address my comments in podcasts and it absolutely makes my week. Second, I ABSOLUTELY agree with having a MAINTENANCE schedule for all tarantulas. I absolutely check all of mine weekly, open the enclosure, get some fresh air in, pull out boluses, refill water dishes, and sometimes I do this more than once a week if I notice some moss has wicked out water, I’m on top of that immediately. But just as you said, this weekly MAINTENANCE schedule does not always involve feeding. My issue is “fat or thin I feed it weekly” and I think that can lead to overfeeding. I think you did a great job explaining this I just wanted to clarify that I 100% agree with regular scheduled maintenance. Plus I’m in there all the time checking on them anyway, lol. The other point I wanted to mention was regarding impaction. I absolutely recognise that the abdomen is likely full of poop, I think I just didn’t properly express that it’s just that when I see an abdomen that is so plump it resembles that of an impacted spider? That can’t be healthy, I’m sorry. I totally recognise that new keepers may struggle to recognise “as needed” but I think a good rule of thumb is if the abdomen is larger than the carapace it probably doesn’t need to eat. Moults will happen when they happen. Offer prekilled or maimed if you can’t tell. The spider will either eat or it won’t eat. If that meal puts it over the edge and makes it very large, hold off. I want to reiterate that I understand that this may be too complicated for new keepers but that was like four sentences and I feel like it’s pretty straightforward. I think part of this may come from the fact that I keep mostly old world arboreals so if they get that fat there absolutely is something wrong because they are just not built to get that gigantic. Yeah, a lot of the posts I see are your GAB species and for some reason A. genic (they’re piggies though so it’s understandable) and the new keeper logic just doesn’t apply to my collection of Lampropelma, Phormingochilus, and Omothymus. I have very limited experience with beginner species, but I will say my 3 inch B. boehmei just moutled and I had no idea she was in premoult. She just looked like a healthy spider. Soooo even the GAB species don’t need to get that fat to moult. I say all this with the utmost respect just wanted to add some nuance to my original comment. Amazing podcast as always and keep up the amazing work!

      @@TomsBigSpidersI’ve been thinking about your podcast and my follow up comment all day and it’s eating away at me enough that I had to pull over on my way to my client to mention this. I don’t feel that this is a black and white issue. Is it wrong to feed your spiders weekly? Absolutely not. However, do I personally based on experience believe there are other, possibly better ways of doing things? Definitely. I think that’s what makes the hobby so great. There are many ways to care for these amazing animals. I’m just really struggling to articulate that I don’t think feeding weekly, with no consideration of the species, stage of life, size of the specimen, or anything else, is necessarily the best way of doing things. Can it be done? Again, absolutely. Is that how I choose to keep mine and how I recommend new keepers to do things? No. My P. cancerides would eat every day if I offered it to him, but he looks like a healthy weight right now and I don’t see a need to feed him when I fill his water weekly. Plus, he’s going to mature likely on his next moult and I’d like to keep him around for as long as possible, seeing as he is the first spider I handled and I have a soft spot for him. I think this is a very nuanced topic but again I didn’t feel I articulated my feelings properly in the original post or my follow up comment after listening to the podcast a second time. I think we agree on the principle but my phrasing was maybe not what it should have been. Thanks for all you do!

    after 13 years of keeping spiders, and over 20 years with reptiles..... you dont need a ton of ventilation. just ventilation in the right places. id say spreading the holes instead of adding more might be just as good. I personally always drill holes near the substrate and sometimes even make holes below the top of the substrate. this helps keep the substrate from getting stagnant. Small holes tho so nothing escape or falls out. doesnt take much. I ALWAYS do this with avicularia and other sensitive arboreals and hardly have any issues with slings dying. You can overwater with confidence.

    I have 3 or 4 obt rcf and seem like they have average attitudes. One female adult true color form. She hides most the time or if she is out and sees me she casually goes in her hide. Then my baby dark color form is a crazy one that teleports everywhere in her container. Hopefully she chills out later. Btw my rcf are a bit semi aboreal. Tcr is terrestrial and my dcf we will have to wait and see.

    Was meaning to ask this a week ago 😂 I have a room for another baboon Tarantula, I was thinking of picking between a P. murinus (the orange one), P. murinus kigoma (dark looking one), C marshali or a C darlingi. In your experience which of these is the more visible one? I already have a balfouri and h pulchripes which are visible for the most part but they are both on pre-molt so haven seen them in a while.😅
    Hope you and your family had a fun holiday 🎄

      @TomsBigSpiders  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, Jem! That's a tough one. Right now, both my C. darlingi are out in the open, while four of five P. murinus are in their dens. That said, I tend to catch them out quite a bit. My C. marshali is normally hidden in her burrow. It's kind of a crap shoot! hahah Happy New Year, bud!

    Very smooth quick rehousing!
    I hate to be "that guy" but I'll go ahead and say it....
    I'm not saying what you did was dangerous, I just want to point out that if you choose to turn over the cup with the spider in it, make sure it's close to the substrate as you did. If you turn the old container over into the new one from any height you're adding risk of injury/ticked off spider.
    I mean this in no slight to you, you lowered them in there and then angled them. I just wanted to clarify you didn't unload a dump truck as a new form of rehousing. Obvious as it was, I felt the need to reiterate I suppose.
    Anyways I hope I didn't offend, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to the Moran household!

      Sadly, I meant to put a note on the bottom addressing this and forgot when I was editing it. Hopefully, other see - like you did - that I wasn't dumping them out above the substrate. Thank you!!! Happy New Year!

    I just got a P. sazimai sling for Christmas. I've already watched what videos I could find from you, Tarantula Collective and Dave's Little Beasties but all of them are older videos. Any chance of talking you into doing an update on yours and any newer info on their care if it's changed in the last few years?

    Hey Tom, Huge fan! One quick question, this "terrestrial+" sounds like a great idea to me! How much will this new tarantula themed streaming platform cost monthly?? will it be available on my Amazon Firestick? Will we get to see unedited footage of the white stuff? Thanks :)!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It will be $9.99 with limited ads or $12.99 for ad-free viewing. The white stuff will only be featured on the sister channel - Webhub. Happy New Year!

    I have 2 of those authentic joy enclosures. NOT WORTH THE MONEY! The glue on the corners around the lids doesn't hold. The sliding doors get stuck and the edges are pulling away leaving gaps. I'm surprised to see Tom using them..

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Did you contact her about them? They had an issue with the first run of them where the glue didn't hold. She replaced mine with the newer version, which have all been just fine. If you haven't let her know, I would.
