Why the Gamecube Failed - The Story of the Gamecube (Part 1)

  • Beloved by fans, the Nintendo Gamecube had a rocky history. The console failed to make an impact on the video game world when it released in 2001 and is often times overshadowed by much more successful consoles. The gamecube failed.
But why did it fail? I hope to answer that in the first part of this series covering the Nintendo Gamecube.

Fantastic video, just got to get that out of the way. It's really not fair to say that "people were only into games about killing." Yes, GTA: 3, Vice City, and San Andreas were popular and certainly were among the PS2 and Xbox best selling games, but they only make up a small percent of the best selling titles for those platforms. On the PS2, that top 10 is shared with Gran Turismo 3 and 4, Final Fantasy 10 and 12, Kingdom Hearts, Tekken 5 and Metal Gear Solid Solid 2. On the OG Xbox things fall in line more with that statement with games like Halo 1-2, Fable, Counter-Strike, and Ninja Gaiden, though a good amount of sports and racing games make up its list.

I love how people say the PS2 was the go to because of DVD. Yes, it was an advantage but overall it was the games. The console was just better it's as simple as that. It had way better 3rd party support and in the end it killed the Gamecube in my opinion. I lost all interest in Nintendo since the N64 because it wasn't anywhere near what people make it out to be. So I skipped the Gamecube until late in it's life and even then I still seen nothing on it that interested me. The PS2 was catered more towards the mature gamers where as the Gamecube was aimed more towards kids. So this myth that the PS2 sold best simply because of the DVD compatibility is ridiculous because it would have still succeeded without it over the Gamecube.
Nintendo became arrogant and thought Mario and Zelda was going to keep them on top. And because of that they soon seen others like Sony and Microsoft passing them by. I still say to this day that there will never be consoles made by Nintendo better than the NES and SNES

Pretty sure it sold like shit in UK too. Growing up I could tell gamers young and old barely knew what the thing was, it wasn't advertised at all. You either had a PS2, and Xbox, a PC or nothing. I never really saw the games or the console being sold anywhere. I saw dreamcast games being sold more than I saw fanciness games in shelves. lol. Maybe it's the area I lived in. But when ever I hear people talking about how much the gameplay made their childhoods and stuff. 90% of the tine they are American.
Some personal things for me which I find pretty funny:
I had 3 friends who owned a gamecube growing up. Only 3. To this day some of my friends say they don't really know what it is, just a console of the ps2 era that no one really got. I know one of my friends had a cousin who owned it, and he thought it was the coolest thing ever. When ever he went to his cousins they would play it. But he didn't know what the console was called until I showed him it was the gamecube xD. I remove him just telling me "I had a cousin who had this sick console. We used to have a blast on it all the time. It was blue and it looked like a lunch box. Don't know what it is though." I laughed out loud.

While this reasons did not helped the Gamecube the real reason the Gamecube sold like shit was not because the PS2 was a DVD player, or any weird reasoning. It's quite simple really, it's games sucked. Yes, they did suck, from a commercial standpoint. There was simply not enough games for a mass market audience to invest in it. It also had a huge stigma from the N64 era and had the dreaded kiddie mark of doom. It was seen by many gamers as the kiddie console for losers. I letting you know this because that's what many friends think of the Gamecube. It was not a really popular console at all. Granted me personally I loved the Gamecube and enjoyed many of it's games. But the mass market hated the Gamecube. They hated the perception of it being a kid's console with kiddie games like Legend of Zelda Windwaker and Super Mario Sunshine. People were more into more adult looking games like Halo and GTA.
The Wii was even more lacking in terms of features to it's competitors being simply two Gamecubes strap together with motion sensor added and wifi capabilities. It was a generation behind in terms of graphics but, it outsold the competition because it had games the mass market wanted and it became a sensation. Nintendo learned from their mistakes with the Gamecube and marketed the Wii as a console for everybody, not for kids or teens. It had a more mature look and marketing behind it and it had games people never seen before. We gamers can laugh at Wii Sports but it's undeniable that a ton of people loved those kinds of games and the Wii sold a truckload because of it.

The problem with Nintendo to this day is that it used to and still treat players like children. The owners of the company were still stuck in the 1980s when no one but children was playing video games. See their publications on Wii or even Switch as for successful consoles, 90% of the games are for children. Imagine that among the 3 parts released on PS2 from GTA, not one of them is on the gamecube. In fact, if Sega hadn't intervened in the 1990s to create the rating system and allow the bloody games that Nintendo fought so hard like Mortal Kombat, we'd be stuck up until now in Nintendo's kids games 😑😑😑😑😑

The gamecube didn't fail man.. What the heck are you talking about. They simply decided to move on and create a better system and stopped making the gamecube. The system was very successful as so were the releases of games. Also what you need to understand is Nintendo wanted to stick to games that actually looked like games, while playstation wanted to focus more on realistic hi-def games. Til' this day, Nintendo does not want to go where other game companies are going and continues to release games that are actual games and are for the youth and focus mainly on stimulation. People who don't feel like killing and doing missions all the time can be sure to have serious relief when switching over to Nintendo

    and sport simulations ( PES, TopSpin, NBA2K... ) .

GameCube sucked, just like every Nintendo console (except for the SNES). They fucked themselves with the small discs. They thought they could prevent piracy with their games with those small discs? Jokes on them since they then lacked a DVD player and decent third-party support (compared to PS2 and even the Original Xbox). The design of the GameCube looks stupid too, and there's no online multiplayer. The games were literally just copy and paste N64 games with better graphics. Then again, Nintendo makes the same damn games every year, so it's not really surprising.
