    Note: people often do a burn-in to stress the drives before actually trusting them, even when they are in a RAID array or other redundant storage system, because the drives that are going to die early can often be detected during or after a burn in (The S.M.A.R.T health diagnostic data often reveals issues after a good burn-in). It's also good to have extra drives on hand to swap out when one of the working drives dies, so you don't have to order a new one and wait to arrive.

    Destin - When I first started watching this, my initial thought was that Linus was going to be installing a standard Linux off the shelf free NAS, and I was totally ready to protest loudly that you NEED to be running UNRAID. I was VERY happy to hear that's what you were getting. I definitely recommend with that amount of data that you use the double parity drives. Just as a real life case - In 2014 I had a house fire, and I was required, and fully able to recover ALL of my data from my UnRaid by copying the data off of each separate drive using a windows machine while sitting in the hotel we lived in for a month after the fire while they found us other temporary housing. You will NOT be disappointed with UnRaid, and I am amazed that we have finally found something that you're not an expert on! :-) It wasn't mentioned in the video, but another advantage of the UnRaid concept is that the drive capacities can be upgraded one at a time as technology improved. I started mine many years ago with 5 or 6 500gb drives, and now have six 8tb drives, with two of them being parity. If you do any more videos with Linus, I'd LOVE to hear his suggestions on SUPER CHEAP ways to back up UnRaid systems to cloud storage because after having a house fire, I can assure you that RAID is NOT a substitute for offsite backups!!!

    • @OuchMySpleen
      @OuchMySpleen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ekinteko 5 ปีที่แล้ว +166

      After all the formatting and software, it'll be closer to 130TB's.
      Let's suppose the stash of 25TB's of HDD's that Linus was holding, was mostly full, and around 15TB's. He would've had around x8 stashes of 20TB's.... or at least 120TB's right there on his bedroom floor. That's just an estimation.
      Short answer is; it probably was not enough. Even if it was, it would barely be enough. And there would be NO SPACE for any additional content, which is pretty much the point of building a Personal Server for his Channel.
      It would've been better if he used a larger PC Box, with more ventilation, and stuck to a high-end Intel processor (for the advanced options). But most importantly switch out the 3.5inch HDD's instead for small 2.5in SSD's. He could get a lot faster performance, less power, less heat, less noise, and much better security/stability. The only downside would be the price going up from say USD $5k-$10k closer to USD $15k-$30k. But honestly, that's cheap for SmarterEveryDay considering the ramifications of having memory storage for the business.
      I think Dusten needs to upgrade his Camera's flash storage from 256GB to at least 1TB, and switch over to a Flash-only workspace. And he would need to be selective with the footage he captures, then saves, then selectively archives. Otherwise, no amount of server is going to be enough. At least he has the Excel spreadsheet, which shows he has some idea of forward-thinking to not make easily avoidable mistakes in memory management.

      Depends on write levels, not read levels.
      And they're much better these days than say 5 years ago, that its a much smaller factor to consider. Based on what I think Dusten will use his server for; store once, backup, and read for editing... there's not going to be much stress on the SSD's.
      And more modern software can even identify SSD's with some defective portions, and re-format it, so that you still get full use out of the drive with the working portions. Hard-drives can also do this, but to a much smaller extent, and not as quickly or reliably.
      So, honestly, there's no excuse for him to not upgrade to an all SSD solution. Even price isn't a factor for the business at the current time.

    I know I'm pretty late to the party with this comment, but after watching this I had a huge dose of nostalgia. Back in 1997/1998 I worked at a photography studio that decided to go digital. Back then a 5 GB SCSI drive cost about $500, and a regular IDE drive had about 20GB to 80GB of storage. Our only storage option was burning data to CDs 600MB at a time. Like your hard drives, we had a large assortment of CDs that I numbered 1 to about 200, categorized by year. So the first year we had about 120 CDs for 1998, 170ish for 1999, etc. I had to keep track of what images where on which disc on a spreadsheet. Sometimes our data would just sit on a hard drive because no one had time to back the info up before going home and I'd wake up in cold sweats afraid a hard drive would fail and we'd lose data.

      what you're saying is something linus is 100% aware of. he once had his WIP project editing server fail (the raid manager failed, not the drives), causing him to very nearly lose weeks worth of editor's work. they did have all the unedited footage and raw data, but they didn't have a solution for in-progress edits. additionally, he's started *running out* of space on his 1000TB archival server, and has now started moving data to archival tape.
      this man is the data hoarding guru, he knows all about offsite storage, including experiments with how much google will allow you to cram onto their cloud storage. in destin's case, just the move to a raid server is a huge step up. he can also now compress everything onto those drive and toss them in a storage locker if need be.

    Problem I have with RAID (aside from rebuild times as the volumes get over 1TB), is that the dumb low-level controller card can't tell what data is good or bad, so when it sees a parity error, it'll try to "correct it" without understanding what is good or bad. The RAID calculation is essentially a checksum - if the checksum fails, the data (somewhere) is bad. The RAID controller will only "fix" the errors by attempting to make the checksum match again. This could in effect make good data get replaced with what makes the checksum correct (coin toss if it's good or bad data).
    This is one of the problems that a file system-level data integrity function like what ZFS does, is for. It does a hash at the file, folder, volume level - so it understands when a file is corrupted and can actually fix it. But taking one of the ideas for RAID1 (mirroring), you can duplicate the file in another location (takes a lot of extra storage) - and if the file system sees that the other copy's hash is correct, it'll just replace the bad data in that file with known good data - and job done. Again a hardware controller can't tell which of the two files is bad or good - it can just tell they don't mathematically match. A file system that looks at more than just blocks and uses much more data to derive a hash, can make better choices about the data.
    It's hard to get one computer to house all the data you want and tolerate faults well - so many are moving towards a hybrid of ZFS at the volume level, and doing machine-to-machine and volume-to-volume redundancy with GlusterFS (a network file share system essentially). Nice thing about that is you can set up Gluster to mirror your ZFS volumes across sites (using a private VPN), so you can say, run a copy of your data-farm at an in-law's house (have them get business internet, or better yet move the other copy into a data-center collocation rack) in another part of the country to reduce your exposure to a regional disaster.
    You'd probably be interested in making a trip to the U.S. Library of Congress - to see how they (as professional archivists) are keeping the digital collection they care for "bit-accurate". It's a complete paradigm shift from what home users and even most business users do - and to be frank, if your data is really that important to you, it's totally worth it to mimic. It's a story in itself.

    Many big data companies have moved away from RAID due to serious problems, such as the RAID 5 "write hole", or the problem where the parity disk fails when rebuilding after another failed drive. Most are switching to ZFS, which has data *checksums*. This protects against data corruption, whereas RAID only protects against whole drive failures. The issue with ZFS is that it has a steeper learning curve. But it's worth it if you care about your data.
