A tour I would love to go through is the so-called Maerchenstrasse, the fairy tale road. It is a secret dream I have to go for a holiday through Germany like this when I retire. It starts off in the north in Buxtehude, then goes to Bremen, contains Bad Oyenhausen, Hameln, Holzminden, Göttingen, Kassel, Marburg, and finally ends in Hanau. On the way, you are confronted with several fairy tales and places, such as der Rotkaeppchenwald, (the woods of little red riding hood), das Dornröschenschloss, the grounds of Frau Holle (another German fairy tale), the Bremer Stadtmusikanten, and Snow Whites castle and so on.... But it will take quite a lot of time, so I guess I will only be able to go when I retire.... On your way, which you can take by bike, you seem to see stunning landscapes there...

Many videos about Germany lack the North unfortunately. The coastlines and beaches of the North Sea and the Baltic are great. Islands like Amrum, Fehmarn, Langeoog, Norderney, Sylt, Rügen, Usedom, Fischland-Darß and many others are stunningly beautiful and well worth visiting or even spend the holidays there. Also the cities in the North like Bremen, Hamburg, Kiel, Wismar, Lübeck, Stralsund or Rostock are very attractive and partially UNESCO world heritage cities.

I can only support that. We live in Schleswig-Holstein, can swim every day in the river Eider and have a 12 Minute trip with the train to Kiel. Schleswig-Holstein lies between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea and even small towns like Husum, Eckernforde and Kappeln are adorable. I have been to beautiful places all over the world but choose to live here... ❤

I live in England (in a relatively small town in the East Midlands - Loughborough, pronounced Lufbra by the locals). Through a series of coincidences and life events, I now travel regularly to our twin town (Partnerstadt), Schwäbisch Hall, around an hour by train from Stuttgart. It is an amazing place, and these visits have enriched my life so much. The architecture is stunning, the surrounding countryside is wonderful, and there is great weight placed on culture, notably art galleries, museums, and even a replica of the Globe Theatre that stands on the banks of the River Kocher. Most of all, the locals are very friendly and there is a sense of pride in the town. Check it out, you won't regret it!

Moved to Germany from Canada (prairie region) 12 years. We moved from a big city to a relatively small town (under 20k population) in northern Germany between Hamburg and Lübeck. I grew up on a farm in the wilds of Canada, but I do not miss the nature there at all, in fact, I find I am able to enjoy the outdoors much more here. We have 7 lakes surrounding our little town, 6 of which allow no motor boats, and thus are clean as can be. Going for a swim any day is easy, spring, summer, fall or winter. All around are kilometers of forests with many huge beach, oak, and evergreens. I miss my friends from Canada, but love the environment here much more.

Every region in Europe has it pros and cons but there is nothing wrong with being different. Diversity is often a source of fear or envy. But traveling, and even more so living in a foreign country, opens our minds and souls. BTW, although the Brits may see it differently, but for me UK is still a part of Europe. Germany is so diverse, from the Northern coasts, the Northern and Eastern plains, the hilly Midlands with their big rivers to the Alps in the South.
I myself, born and raised in NRW, found my home in Lower Bavaria. I fell in love with the Bavarian Forest, rising up from the banks of the river Danube. Totally underrated area of Bavaria, and Germany. The proximity do Czech Republic and Austria makes it so special.
I love it, in wintertime, a 15 minutes drive takes me from the grey and murky town into a glorious winter wonderland. Often it is grey and foggy in near the Danube, for weeks, but as soon as you get above 600-700 meters elevation, the clouds break up and the blue sky is welcoming you.
And on a hot summers day, hiking in the cool and dark woods with awesome views, little establishments offering tasty foods and of course beer for a rest stop en-route. Holiday feeling right on your doorstep.
Or you can take a quick refreshing skinny dipping break in the river and lie in the sun.
And the people are the best. Friendly, and happy! I don’t want to live anywhere else!

As for where to visit, I like the more rural ancestral areas of northern Germany, probably because the culture and geography align more with my rural and farming background and experiences. Coming from the West, near Köln. I once looked at a card with all the water in Germany. Stream, river, lake big and small and that was a lot. I realised that I personly live in one the regions in Germany with the biggest 'hole' waterwise on that map.

8:35 Eisenach is also worth visiting, especially the Wartburg that is one of the more important places in German history. And also the Bachhaus where Johann Sebastian Bach was born is one of the more interesting places in Germans history. Also in Hesse Wetzlar has something to offer to tourists. Not only the Leica Museum at the new Leica facility, but also the Reichskammergericht were Johann Wolfgang von Goethe worked as an Assessor for long enough to get inspiration for his world changing novel „Die Leiden des jungen Werther“. There is also a museum at the Jerusalem-Haus where the original „Werther“ lived during Goethe‘s time in Wetzlar. And of course last but not least, Wetzlar has a unique unfinished cathedral that is part romanic and part gothic. Also the old town is one of the more beautiful ones for a city that size who mainly lived in the past from it‘s large industries (Leitz, Zeiss, Buderus) and two military bases.

I lived in Germany between 89 and 93 and I can attest to the value Germans place on their environment. Coming from the US, the importance of rehabbing instead of tearing down, limiting the spread of cities and towns so there are these green spaces, whether it be forests or farms. Then, there is the human scale which I miss very much. Very nice video.

An ex of mine lived in Augsburg, so I recognized the city right away and it brought back nice memories. That city strikes a great balance. Really comfy and pretty, but also just busy and studenty enough to feel like a happening place.
Have you been to the Oberallgäu yet? Of course it's one of Germany's most touristy regions, but there are good reasons for that. I grew up down there. Of course, when I was a kid, I wanted to get away as quickly as possible from what I considered was a provincial backwater. These days I am so lucky that my current job allows me to get back regularly. I get withdrawal symptoms when I stay in the city too long. My eyes need to see green and my lungs need the air!
When I cycle up some valley and then have a rest in a mountain creek (kinda like you hanging out by the Lech in this clip, only smaller and actually out in nature), that's when I am in my happy place. Totally at ease with everything and just happy to be around.
So I recommend visiting the Oberallgäu. You can take cable cars up the mountains, you'll also find valleys that few tourists visit where you'll possibly even see eagles and marmots. The closest cities Kempten and Lindau (by Lake Constance, which is also lovely) are gems with rich history. I think you'll enjoy your time there.
