  • My name is Josh. Subtitles:16 languages. I am so impressed by Angelina! She just stood up there and sang the song acapella with style and soul. I'm still amazed to see her so entrenched in each song at such a young age. I can't wait to continue my Angelina journey. Thank you for watching my reactions.

Currently 2022, Angelina is 6 feet tall, always barefoot for performing, sews her own clothes and has the most gorgeous voice in the artistry world of music. She has done most if not all of her own arrangements since the age of 8 years old❗ I see nothing other than greatness in her future 🤗

At first I thought all the contestants had to sing a cappella this time until I saw the boy behind her with his guitar. BTW, she never gets nervous on stage, according to her. She has a habit of putting her hair behind her right ear, which is what she did after she finished singing. I don’t think she’s 8 yet-her teeth are still not down. You will see the difference in the finale performance.

That was a great reaction, Singer Dad. Your observations about Angelina Jordan are really nice to consider. Some of your ideas have never crossed my mind before. At the ages 10 to 11, I started to realize how truly special she is, and today, at 14, she just keeps getting better. It's her intellect. She composes a work of art in her mind; never forgets how it is constructed; and then she performs it every time - flawlessly and exactly by design. Angelina is a joy to follow, and thank you for your insight.

Very nice reaction. You hit the nail on the head with your light switch comment. When Angelina steps on the stage, she gets a microphone in her hand, and it's all business, then she takes us to her world.

She’s not nervous. She said she never gets nervous. She’s still 7 here. They required the contestants to sing a cappella unless they were playing an instrument (which doesn’t sound fair to me).

Angelina is one of the most addictive singers I have ever listened to, & one of the very few, that can pull you right into the song, making you feel, every word, every note, & every emotion. ❤️💙 I always have this feeling that Angelina is not only channeling some of these late great singers, but that they also pass through her, when she is singing their song ❤️💙 A rare beauty, in every sense of the word ❤️💙 Loved your reaction!!!

Singing before a worldwide audience in acapela at 7 years of age is not to be believed. Throw in the fact
that she is covering the legendary Billie Holiday just blows my mind. She is the #1 most versatile singer
on the planet and can cover any singer with ease.

She was only 7 years old here. The video clip was taken when the potential contestants for Norway Got Talent were pre-trailed before the actual show to reduce the numbers required to qualify for the televised show. It was a cappella as there was no audience and probably no celebrity judges and no backing musos present. Angelina was seven years old when she first sang in that competition but celebrated her eight birthday before winning the final. Who in their right mind would allow a seven year child to sing "I am a fool to want you" a cappella just to qualify for a place in a nationwide talent contest. Angelina has shown over and over again that she is a very special person with a very special family.

    • @jeremybutler2166

Are you sure this was her first exposure on ngt? My own impression ,and most other comments I have read ,suggest that ‘ gloomy Sunday ‘ came first and that this was a subsequent knock out round. Certainly, the judges’ reaction to gloomy Sunday suggests they had not heard Angelina before unless of course they were faking surprise . ‘The fool to want you ‘ performance is accessible in both an edited and fuller length version( this one , which the judges would have obviously heard) and it is so remarkable that I believe the judges would have been prepared for what came after .

    • @trevorkrause7220
      @trevorkrause7220 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jeremybutler2166 Well. it is a cappella, and it is low key with no desernible audience participation. The other contestants are basically standing in a gaggle behind her but way too close to be respectable to a performing contestant on the big stage. Also if you can find the extended clip of this song you will see near the end that the adjudicators, not the absent celebrity judges, choose only a limited number of contestants from those present to continue to whatever is next (it is not in English, nor has it any sub-titles). Angelina was not of any of the first ones picked, she was almost last but not quite. Not that that actually meant anything. Also all the other wannabe contestants behind her are also chldren, so my guess is that they were whittling down the numbers in each category to be ready for the start of the televised show.

She has said many times that when she sings, she goes to a beautiful place in her mind where the music resides. It's almost like she goes into a trance & you can see it every time. Just as you said... Angelina is an artist. She doesn't just sing a song.. she goes into the song... she becomes the song. You will often see her close her eyes while singing as she goes into that world of music in her head. I may just be hearing things, but I would swear you can hear her get just a tiny bit better every time she closes her eyes (Look for that when you get to 'What a difference a day makes'). Also, just wait until you hear Angelina do "I'm a Fool.." at 11/12. She puts ALL the flavor on that one :) I look forward to your next one. Those other 2 NGT performances are also incredible. ...and you will see her get continually better and better as you go :)

  • @johnvasi
    @johnvasi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

On this song and on Gloomy Sunday, she’s channeling Billie Holliday, even though she’s adding her own twists. She’s not nervous-the breathing is stylistic. You’ll see that when you watch her do her two real performances before an audience on this Norway’s Got Talent. On Bang, Bang and Summertime, she’s not channeling anyone. The artistry you mentioned that she shows on today’s song is on full display in the next two. They are all Angelina. Summertime is just riveting, and her version is unique.
Bang, Bang was the one that threw me over the edge a few years ago. I always loved that song. I thought Cher’s version was very good, and I thought Nancy Sinatra’s was even better. Angelina at eight years old, in my opinion, outsings them. Her delivery captures the melancholy of the lyrics better than anyone, even though the guitar behind her seems to be playing the exact back-up from the 1960’s recording. And that pared back, quiet delivery you’ll still see today. Angelina draws in the audience not by showing unnecessary vocal range and power, but by giving life to the true meaning of the lyrics. You’re hooked from the opening line-first by the startling depth of her voice and then by the immediate personal contact between you and her. She was mesmerizing at eight years old, just as she was later with Bohemian Rhapsody, A Million Years Ago, Stay, and many more.

Nice reaction. You are not alone in being unable to pinpoint what exactly Angelina does to make us feel the music. But, man, is it effective! Her breathiness is a choice and she uses it when she thinks its adds to the meaning. Shes not nervous. She has said she goes into a magical world of light and happiness when she sings. "It's amazing!" She said in an interview. Her use of breathiness, vocal fry, vibrato, and other ornaments and embellishments carry through her music when necessary. So, we heard a lot more riffs and runs in her first two AGT performances than we had earlier--crowd/judge likes. This is a fun journey. I like what you do. Bang Bang and Summertime showcase this diamond in the rough becoming the polished gem she is today. Enjoy , as will I!

Angelina's early study of jazz music came through the window of TH-cam. In an interview, Angelina tells the story of how she randomly came across Billie Holiday's I'm A Fool To Want You. She was so taken by the melody that she said she had to listen to it everyday. In this performance you can hear what a great student Angelina is. It's this early foray into jazz classics that has made Angelina the singer she is today.

Her subtle intonations are years beyond her age and her pitch is perfect. It is quite clear by the look on Angelina’s face when she is singing that she is channeling the music and the singing style of original the artist. She has the ability to see the music in her mind and how the song needs to be performed. Her maturity level and professionalism are far beyond the abilities of other child singers.
There is a deceased blues guitarist and singer, Stevie Ray Vaughn that also had the unique ability to allow his mind to go to a different place as he was performing. Rock guitar legend, Eric Clapton said, “I have never seen a man more at one with his guitar than Stevie Ray Vaughn is. When Stevie plays he channels the music from his mind down through his hands. Most guitarists need to pause or take a break to figure out where they want to go next, but Stevie has the incredible ability to play non stop without ever needing to take a break ”.

She is in that zone, alright! There’s much to explore there. Here’s the deal, as I understand it: as a little girl was very gifted, it’s all style and mimicking (to some degree) great singers of the past. Now, she’s about conveying feelings and emotions that she couldn’t possibly know and understand as a child. How can she do this? Who cares? She can. Where will she go with this? We can wait for where she’s going. At my age I won’t see the whole thing, but she might be the best granddaughter, I never had.

At this point in her 'career' she has absolutely no idea how good she is. I'm not sure she does today. Very observant about her immersion. She talks about it in some interviews. It happens almost all the time that Angelina's original "love" songs are written for an adult artist to sing them.
Some people have in the past criticise her for her choices of adult content love songs arguing that, as a child, Angelina does not possess the emotional intelligence to fully understand the import of the words she is singing.
But then, they will admit that, as long as she possesses the musical intelligence to express them emotionally, she moved them, at times, to tears, chills or goosebumps.
i suppose, therefore, that it is the proper work of an artist, young or seasoned, to convey skillfully all the ranges and shades of human passions and that Angelina does it, respectfully and reverentially, even better than her idols.
Here, amongst her other vocal abilities and apart from her exquisite vibrato and her dazzling dragging sound effect of her diction, her amazing breath control allows her to finish entirely her phrases before going to the next ones.
And finally, she always sings in tune, always.
Yes, the lifgt switch! That is why, according to her, she is never nervous on stage becaus she goes in a place in her mind wher beauty and music create the magic necessary for her to escape, as a true artist, the reality of the performance to take a calm refuge into another world of hers.

It is a pleasure to watch you pick up the fact that Angelina as she is just turning eight is actually making word changes. No other at this age in a third language could, would or even think of this. You do know that if you continue to follow her you will be in your rocking chair talking about Angelina and your Grandchildren going off to college.

From reading about her life, I believe Angelina learned about art and being creative from her early days, and from her grandmother, Mery Zamani, a well-known visual artist and poet. The creative life is inspiring to grow up around. Angelina clearly has understood that magic and openness well.

Welcome back Josh. I really do enjoy your reactions and analysis to Angelina. I was surprised that I had not already subscribed but I did today. Seems a good percentage of people when introduced to Angelina have a very difficult time accepting her soulful voice while seeing it comes from such a young girl. It is still difficult for my brain to accept it at times. I believe this is why some reactors who are professionals in voice and/or music don't return to do additional reactions of Angelina.

Here's my theory. If you are a singer who performs in front of people, whether you admit it or not, some part of you likes the attention. If you decide to make a youtube channel, and your face is on other people's computers, whether you admit it or not, you like the attention, being seen and being heard. Along comes a 10 year old Norwegian girl who sings better than you ever dreamed of singing, and suddenly you feel threatened or insecure. So you hide behind a technical analysis which saves you from having to discuss just how awesome the young Norwegian girl sounds, but deep down, you know you've just been upstaged. I have watched many of these videos, as you probably have too, and only a handful of vocal coaches or voice teachers have the nads to admit how stunningly delicious Angelina's voice is. This is why they don't always return for round two. Of course, I could be wrong, Lol.

There is some debate about her age here, and I'm on the side that believes she is still 7 and turns 8 before the semi's. But we need to ask Sara (her mom) to get the answer. She has never shown any indication that she is nervous before and during a performance. And the breathiness is her style, which she continues today. For me, this is her most impressive performance on NGT. On stage with all the remaining singers in the competition, she steps up to the mike, snaggletoothed, mounds of hair, little white dress, barefooted, and sings this song totally a cappella. And she nails it. If you follow the video all the way to the end, the little girl in red standing behind her places her hands over her face in disbelief, as if to say, what was that. After this performance the judges confirmed their belief that they had a STAR on their show. Of course, she goes on to win the show by a landslide, garnering almost half of all the votes. I enjoy your thoughtful and profession assessment of her performances. Looking forward to "Bang Bang". 😊💕

You mentioned her breathing, and how she seems to be running out of breath in places, and yet is still able to finish the lines. (Yes, I'm back today, watching this reaction again. Not sure you'll be back to read it… but oh, well.) You chalked it up to a stylistic choice, but I just wanted to point out that on multiple occasions, I've noticed that she seems to have some kind of "reserve" of breath that she can tap into when she needs to. (No doubt this comes, at least partially, from being so relaxed when she's singing.) Unfortunately, the particular instances that I want to talk about involve songs you haven't gotten to yet (spoiler alert: they're "I Put a Spell on You" when she was 9 and "Feeling Good" when she was 10). Suffice it to say, you may notice in certain performances that she does far more on a single breath than it seems possible for her to do, given the intake of air you've just heard/seen her do. When you get to the aformentioned songs, I'll have more to say. [grin]

Back again 4 months later to point to a video I rediscovered today on her "Fanclub Mosarz" channel (saw it several months ago, and completely forgot about it). There are so many videos on that channel, some of them just "fall though the cracks". One of those (currently only at around 4K views) is th-cam.com/video/2a5BFtFb0EU/w-d-xo.html in which she is seen practicing this song for this very performance (as evidenced by her teeth - it's definitely between her "Gloomy Sunday" audition and this second-round performance). She is singing along with the music, and I must say, it is fascinating to see how she sings it a little differently than here (a little closer to how Billie sang it, IMO). This is really the only reason I'm bothering to post this, since you talked about how she wasn't just singing the song the same way Billie did.
BTW, for the record, the clips before and after the song (where she says [and shows that] she has chicken pox) were obviously recorded significantly later, somewhere midway between her second-round [2014-02-07] and semifinal [2014-04-11] performances (again, based on her teeth). There's a TV segment where she "goes back to her school after her first audition" th-cam.com/video/LWgqoiLnp1E/w-d-xo.html where her teeth look _very_ similar to the "chicken pox clip". That would have to have been after 2014-03-07 (presumably the Monday after, so 2014-03-10 - unless it had to be later because she already had chicken pox at that time). Anyway, apparently it takes about 2 weeks to get to the point where you're no longer contagious with CP, so that clip could have been either 1 or 2 weeks before the TV segment was recorded, or within a few weeks after it.

It was created by Steve7008 who took her NGT recording of “I’m a fool to want you”, cut her vocals into 25 pieces and without changing them, inserted her vocals to fit onto a backing track. He did not change anything regarding her vocals. Just fitted them around the music. Absolutely fantastic. You will be amazed. Really beautiful

Great reaction. I believe Dimash and Angelina Jordan are the best singers in the world, but they are not my favorite. I want to introduce you to someone you haven't reacted to, Ronnie Radke from "Falling in Reverse", which I believe is the most talented man in the music industry. He puts more emotion in his songs, lyrically and vocally than any other artist. His videos are second to none, he has a beautiful voice, he can Rap, Rock, Growl, or sing a Ballad. Most of the time he mixes genres in a song. I'd like to start you off with the song "The Drug In Me Is Reimagined" which is a remake of a song he wrote and released in 2011 called "The Drug In Me Is you". I would say react to both in the same video so you see what changes he did or just skim through the original and react to "The Drug In Me Is Reimagined". Also, Ronnie does reactions to TH-camrs reacting to him, so you don't have to worry about copyright strikes, Ronnie loves when his videos get reacted to. Warning: This comment is very long and rambling. I didn't have time to make it shorter. [grin]
As you have already seen in the comments under your other recent AJ reactions, a lot of people make a big deal about how English is not her native language. While I suppose that's technically true, we have more than enough evidence to conclude that she learned English _along with_ Norwegian as she was growing up (and presumably Farsi, as well, and probably some Japanese). Just looking at her facial expressions and gestures as she is singing (not just here, but in all her early performances), you can tell that she knows *exactly* what she's singing about (notwithstanding all the lyrical omissions and alterations that have been made to the songs - for example, here she doesn't sing "to share a kiss the devil has known").
Speaking of "lyrical omissions": you know how in "Gloomy Sunday" she omitted the entire second verse? Well, I really wonder whether she actually sang it and they just edited it out of the broadcast, because they did that for this particular performance. (I feel like I've told you this already, but I'll go ahead and say it, anyway.) All the early uploads of this performance present an edited version that is missing the entire bridge of the song (from "Tiiiime and tiiiime agaaaain" up to just before the line "Pity me, I need you"). This can be seen at th-cam.com/video/NZU7xpeZm_c/w-d-xo.html which was posted the same day as the TV broadcast. Listen to the part where the edit happens, 57 seconds in, just as they cut to a shot of one of the female judges. If you're listening for it, you can hear the edit happen as she's breathing in, but apart from that, you cannot tell that anything weird just happened. It sounds like that's how she sang the song. But in the omitted part, as heard in this full version, the melody was "all over the place". It's incredible that she could return to the original key/pitch/whatever so precisely after all that. It's things like this that make some people think she has perfect pitch (i.e., absolute pitch). Personally, I think she "only" has what's called relative pitch; that's all she would need to be able to stay on pitch like this after choosing a starting pitch. (Actually, I don't know if relative pitch would technically be required to sing this good a cappella, but she's so good with pitch overall, across all her performances from NGT onwards, that I feel like she must have relative pitch.) [Pitch, pitch, pitch, pitch…]
Which brings me to her choice of initial pitch. As you mentioned, she did not get a pitch cue before starting. She is actually singing this a bit hgher than Billie's original. I'd be interested in knowing how much higher, and whether she is actually singing in a precise key (as opposed to being pitched at an "arbitrary" location between two keys), as that would definitely inform the debate over whether she has perfect pitch (or end it, depending on the answer). Not sure if you can help with this. The way she's singing here is far too "fluid" for me, as a lay person, to identify how far off of Billie's pitch she actually is, but I'd guess somewhere between a semitone and a full tone.
She was obviously _very_ familiar with Billie's recording, as evidenced by her remembering the entire song and how she retained the basic structure of Billie's vocal arrangement while adding her own stylistic touches. You connected this to her "Bohemian Rhapsody" performance earlier this year. I can confirm that a lot of what she's doing here she would continue to do in many, if not most of her performances up until "today". In particular, her tendency to "draw out" words and hold notes longer than the original singer, with more vibrato and more "sliding" between different notes are all practically trademarks of hers.
Looking forward to the next one. It's very different, but every bit as impressive, IMHO.
