Twenty years ago I joined the Navy and was shortly thereafter stationed to SC. We visited Fort Sumter where I remember two older women standing before some monument ranting about "those damn Yankees". I was dumbfounded. Are some Southerners still bitter about the Civil War, I wondered. How crazy! Fast forward to today and it's frighteningly obvious that you don't need to be a Southerner in order to be bitter about who won and who lost the Civil War. Perhaps in another twenty years things I'll look back on today feeling more positive about where we will be at as a nation.
I’m assuming you’re not from the south if you’ve never heard someone say that. As someone from North Carolina, it’s shocking just how much people are blatantly in support of confederate ideals. Rebel flags are everywhere and some people spend huge amounts of money to get giant ones. Why? Who tf knows I don’t talk to those types. Either racism or southern pride but more likely a mix of both
As a Mississippian, you do have to consider that theres still some old folks around that grew up with grandfathers who fought in that war, or who’s father fought in the war. They would have heard the stories about “those damn Yankees,” and saw the destruction wrought in the South as a result, and would have felt for their close ancestors that had to endure that, not to mention the indoctrination that would have accompanied the tension reflected by veterans. And of course, the emotions were just passed down. For example, my grandmother’s father was born in 1888, he was raised by men who fought in the war. He heard stories from the sources, and he told them to my Granny when she was a girl. Granted, she is not one to rant about those damn Yankees lol. She is one that understands that it was a horrible war, and that too much blood was shed to still be bickering about it. It’s better to remember it as a bygone era, and learn to heal. I think as time has passed, there’s less and less people around that are still angry about the war, however there’s a lot that are. It’s mostly old folks and Gen X-ers. It’s definitely a pretty big can of worms. Hope that clarifies it a little.

I feel bad for all the hate you guys are getting. Good for you for playing instruments, playing and singing a song and keeping to your heritage. Haven’t really been getting negative comments. Have gotten a few stupid comments supporting the Confederacy or the Confederate flag. We made pretty clear that this is the UNION version of this historic song.
Honestly I wrote out a whole long comment talking about the history of the war and the flag. But I will say this instead as long as they’re not hurting anyone they are fine. And hurt feelings don’t count. I lived in the south for the first 9 to 10 years of my life, and I have to say it’s not as bad as people like to say it’s mainly stereotypes.
I think it mainly depends on the flag their hanging. The most recent and most widely recognized confederate flag with the red background and the blue ‘x’ with stars wasn’t actually used in battle very often. That one mostly came about after the war and used as a symbol for pro-segregation laws. Personally, I don’t think it’s right to celebrate any confederate flag, even if you’re only doing it as a symbol of heritage. Ultimately though, it’s a free country and everyone is allowed to do what they want with their property; but I would recommend using one of the flags that was actually used during the war, like “The Blood Stained Banner” flag or the “Stars and Bars” flag. (I think those are the names but I might be wrong.)

I feel bad for all the hate you guys are getting. Good for you for playing instruments, playing and singing a song and keeping to your heritage.
So many people will call you Confederates but they have no clue. I guarantee you all aren’t racists, just like me. But these commenters are going to slam you because you’re keeping a song alive. A song. A tune that’s not explicitly racist or anything. It has the word Dixie in it. Big deal. It’s so sad that we’ve come to times where everything has become PC.

Haven’t really been getting negative comments. Have gotten a few stupid comments supporting the Confederacy or the Confederate flag. We made pretty clear that this is the UNION version of this historic song.

Honestly I wrote out a whole long comment talking about the history of the war and the flag. But I will say this instead as long as they’re not hurting anyone they are fine. And hurt feelings don’t count. I lived in the south for the first 9 to 10 years of my life, and I have to say it’s not as bad as people like to say it’s mainly stereotypes.
I think it mainly depends on the flag their hanging. The most recent and most widely recognized confederate flag with the red background and the blue ‘x’ with stars wasn’t actually used in battle very often. That one mostly came about after the war and used as a symbol for pro-segregation laws.
Personally, I don’t think it’s right to celebrate any confederate flag, even if you’re only doing it as a symbol of heritage. Ultimately though, it’s a free country and everyone is allowed to do what they want with their property; but I would recommend using one of the flags that was actually used during the war, like “The Blood Stained Banner” flag or the “Stars and Bars” flag. (I think those are the names but I might be wrong.)
