  • The annual Winter Trip to THE TENT. This was the warmest weather I can remember during a winter trip. Sara joins me for the first winter trip since 2012. Snowmobile lake crossing. Cross country skiing. Ice fishing. Campfire cooking. Backwoods Cabin. Remote Solitude. This was a great trip.

This is for Sara: Normally, one would not expect to find insects or any other invertebrate active in subzero temperatures, but as soon as the temperatures approach the freezing point, tiny animals being to appear on top of the snow.
One of the smallest and most easily overlooked is the Snow Flea (Hypogastrura nivicola). However, it would be exceedingly rare to find a single Snow Flea for when encountered, they usually number in the hundreds, thousands or even tens of thousands! At about two mm long, they look more like pepper grains or organic debris than they do animals. When magnified with a hand lens or binoculars turned backwards, they look not unlike little dark Michelin men!
Snow Fleas are misnamed animals for they are not fleas or any other kind of insect. They belong to their own Class, the Springtails (Collembola), a name that reflects the remarkable ability of these minute creatures to pole-vault across the snow. A springboard appendage called the furcula situated on their "belly" facilitates this ability to leap 100 times their body length.
As winter wanes, Snow Fleas appear on top of the snow in astounding numbers. In other seasons they typically reside on the ground or tree trunks where they dine on fungal spores and organic debris. Their mouthparts are hidden inside their heads so they ingest their food,. In winter, Snow Fleas remain active in the subnivean space under the snow, their mobility in cold temperatures made possible by their unique brand of antifreeze (not the glycerol that is used by other small organisms).
Why Snow Fleas appear on top of the snow after climbing up through the latticework of ice crystals is not fully known. Perhaps it is to acquire food or just to move around more freely. No matter the reason, these miniature pole-vaulters offer us a glimpse into a very different world.

Definitely a winter trip to remember Joe and Sara. Thank you. Hey got a question while I'm thinking of it Joe, you know the winter trip with all that thick ice, wouldn't it be the perfect time to do that dock extension, using the snow auger you could drill the holes for the poles and drive them in the ground without having to get all wet like you would if it was summer. Then you could lay it out tighten everything all up and be set. Of course you would need to bring up everything during deer season or summer and leave it until you was ready. But just wondered lol. Maybe next year's if you don't do it before. Haha and that Sara planned it all out for leaving haha she just wanted a sled ride that's why the early load up hahaha smart girl you got there haha. Anyway thanks for sharing Joe, and yes it was definitely something different than the previous winter trips. Thank you

@@shellyschmidt3498 Snow fleas are classified as Hexapods and more closely related to crustaceans than insects.

snowmobile issue is most likely a loose secondary clutch. belt is riding too low so you need high revs to engage...machine will feel sluggish and worse with a load. Tighten the belt so its riding with just the teeth proud of secondary. lots of videos on it. thanks again for posting...always enjoy your videos.

You have to check the chaincase oil level... you must check that regularly ... basically it's common gear lube you can use what Polaris sells if you want but it's pretty much 85 90 gear lube... but the chaincase must be kept full of lubricant... basically differential lubricant ... the track tension and the track alignment must also be kept on the mark ... do these things the sled Will Never Let You Down that Polaris Will Never Let You Down

Just found your channel recently pretty cool stuff ... I got a 97 Polaris Indy Storm 800 Triple ... pretty fast .. that 550 you have there should be capable of at least 60 mph probably more like 70 at full pin ... not just 43 mph something's not right... I've had this problem in the past with mine ...the right hand carburetor... and mind you there are three ... it can get clogged from the lousy fuel at the gas pump ... so it will start and run on the center and left hand jugs only ... and the right-hand jug is just along for the ride ... it has spark but it's not working because it's not getting fuel ... this is hard to detect with the naked ear ... so I start it cold with the hood open ... right after it starts I feel each Muffler pipe where it exits the head ... both of them on your 550 should begin to build heat fairly rapidly and evenly at the same rate ... if one of them is only warm to the touch while the other one is hot to the touch then that carburetor needs to be cleaned ... and I also do this ... at cold start .. once it's running without choke ... step the idle up using the throttle a little bit .. so the clutch doesn't engage and the sled doesn't move but it's idling a bit higher than it would be normally at normal idle ... hold it there... and while it's there remove each plug wire from each plug and listen for a change ... if you hear a change on each then they're both working ... take your flashlight and get an eyeball on that fan while it's sitting at idle and make sure it's spinning ... fan belts can break... that will cause an overheat bog ... every once in awhile take the airbox out make sure the oil injector lines, assuming that's oil injected ... are in good shape not cracked ... cuz if you starve the left or right cylinder of oil you can burn it up and you got to rebuild the engine ...
I usually wrench on my Polaris more than I ride it .. maintenance mostly ... every time I shut it off to put it away ... I shut the fuel off and let the carburetors idle until the engine stops that way I know the carburetors don't have fuel in them during storage, or stand by ... cuz you don't want to leave ethanol fuel in those carburetors during storage or stand by... cuz it can clogg them up... clogs ports.... I can't afford the ethanol-free fuel ...I just buy the stuff at the pump ... Sea Foam was a good idea and it may have cleared it up... personally I use Berryman's B12 Chemtool ... Todd Klein Channel up there in Minnesota... might be able to help you as well ... TR Channel ..Michigan Flint... good hunting and fishing and trapping to you and yours... P.S. your dad's hunting cabin... wow... nicest I've ever seen...

Snowmobile can be a high-maintenance thing... it just is ... you have to (grease)it you have to check the tension on the track the alignment on the track the alignment on the skis... but once you've done all this... that Polaris 550 you have will b a good Dependable sled
