Hey Guys, great show. Turns out I’m just a song guy. Rock, Country, Disco…If it resonates with me, it doesn’t need a label. Might go from The Cars to Chaka Khan, in a listening session. Man, wish I lived closer….cool record shop, great stereo store near by; (hope Brendon is digging the new NAD). Bet you can get a decent bagel too. That would be a Saturday shopping heaven for me. Kind of how I built up my collection. Late 90’s there was a NY pizza place and the OG- Record Theater, in the same plaza. I’d go in, order a pie…little stroll…grab a pile of records for like 5 for $10. Back home to the NAD rig…I’m a simple man.🍻

This is a great topic and both of you are spot on. My first memory of music is 60 years ago. I have been through various phases of my likes and dislikes. As a teenager we had great discussions and conversations (arguments 😆) about why Sabbath was better than Deep Purple or The Allman Brothers ruled over everyone in Southern Rock. I am now 66 years old and I still like what I like but I have come to appreciate and actually like the music of some artists that I didn’t like or listen to in the past.
Bottom line…..listen to and love whatever turns you on and allow others to do the same thing without being an ass in the process.
Love seeing what both of you guys have to say in these videos!!! ✌️❤️🎸🎧

Enjoyed this video. Musical genres can either be helpful or a hinderance. Sometimes I find bands I like in genres that I wouldn’t normally listen to. I wouldn’t normally listen to glam-metal, but some bands you’ve mentioned I’ve enjoyed, so now I ignore the genre and give them a listen.

Everyone listens to music. The ear of a person is personal. No one should dis someone's personal likes and dislikes. There is factors that draw a persons love and dislikes. Me personally if it rings truth to my life and the moment it bring in a absolute love and follow. A Fan is one that relates to the lyrics and sound the bands produce. People can suggest but not dis. I love Nickleback, I may not like the bands rants but the music is fun and I relate to the lyrics.

Great discussion guys. I've never understood the appeal of The Beatles in respect of being the be all end all of music. My own dad cut a record at Percy Philips recording studio in Liverpool where The Quarrymen did That'll Be The Day. This was in early 1962 before the Fab Four were widely known. Music has been part of my family's life from my dad's father and brother through to myself. I have all The Beatles albums as I am a music fan but to me Sgt Pepper wasn't as good as The Monkees' Headquarters or The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band's Gorilla. As for Pink Floyd I couldn't get into the Waters led material and had to hear See Emily Play and Syd Barrett's Gigolo Aunt to understand what gave them their later appeal.

If someone asks me what do I listen to I give them a simple answer: I listen to everything because my tastes vary from time to time: I bought from Sound Exchange many “different artists” that I enjoy. I have a “Sound Exchange Box” where I keep all my purchases from the one store. A-ha,Clapton,R.E.M and Europe. Just to name a few. Next time I went to the get together I bought other stuff that I enjoy. You cannot tell me you wouldn’t like this or that. Truth of the matter is I listen to just about anything at least once. Except for what I don’t listen to. I really enjoy the hip-hop from the 80’s Run DMC,LL, Jazzy Jeff and the fresh Prince aka Will Smith these days. I knew from a very young age what I wanted to do with my life. Did I ever get there? Nope but I’m cool with that. I also bought Long Gone Day The Sixth. What an awesome record that is. I’ll leave you with that one. Way to go Anthony.

Can I just say respectively, sorry to Brendon in the past we haven't always seen eye to eye.
But I would like to add, some of the artists or bands I am a big fan of, it becomes more a case of you grew so attached to a certain singer of the band that it becomes too hard to imagine someone else taking their place.
For example when Bon Scott died AC/DC were faced with do we carry on or not, but they decided to carry on and found a brilliant replacement for Bon Scott, although calling Brian Johnson a replacement for Bon Scott doesn't sound morally right to some fans, but in my case I have grown to love both eras equally.
But if you look at bands like Thin Lizzy where it was all about the story of Phil Lynott making it big from Ireland and he was and his band that eventually made it to the bigger audience, he was the contributer which paid off, so you could argue who could replace Phil Lynott in that band? But it doesn't respectfully make me an a*****le.
Another way of looking at it when Freddie Mercury died Queen died with him because Freddie made Queen what they were.
But the Paul Rodgers, and Adam Lambert period is awful, because it is not awful, but just capitalising on Freddies past success, so I think this is when some fans get wrongly accused of being as****s they simply don't want their bands being dragged under in such a morally wrong way.
Hopefully I made some sense in my madness.
But I hope I brought sensitivity to the topic.
    Much respect as always.
    Dave., 👌

Okay here’s one for you:Genesis (Why do I keep talking about them?!?) because I can relate to the Van Halen changes with them best. Anyhow Peter Gabriel (new album coming Dec 1 2 CDs) was in the band since inception of the band. He left after The Lamb lies down on Broadway in 1975. They found Phil Collins behind the kit and he took over after a long line of singers failed to impress them. He stayed through the 1980’s and early 90’s while having a successful solo career. He left in 1996: they found Ray Wilson and released the last album September 1 1997. Why am I telling this story many of you may already know the story. My point is I stuck with Genesis through out the lineups. Just because people leave a group that you enjoy don’t give up on your hero’s. End of Story/ rant/my explanation when a group goes through lineup changes. Your friend Bill

Brendon, while you may never get into modern pop-rock artists like Paramore, I am actually surprised that Anthony digs some of the songs the band has released or recorded. (Paramore) is a band that is pretty much an acquired taste, just as many of their influences (like Bowie, the Smiths, Rush, Styx, Roxy Music, Blondie, Michael Jackson, Prince, Bee Gees, ABBA, Roxette and B-52's) are. And I myself am trying them out again to see if I like them or not, although I do already like some of their songs. As you did this with a few artists you weren't initially into (like Oasis, Richard Marx, Robin Trower, Rick Springfield, and these yacht rock bands you didn't care much for at first,) I'm doing likewise with Paramore. So I have learned a few things from you. And one of them is Never Say Never on an artist one dislikes, because tastes might change in the future.

I'm an old Yes fan (hard core) but this fan base is so splintered it's almost unbelievable. I, on the other hand, have followed it through all its transformations. I think prog fans, the purists, are the worst when it comes to dealing with things like rock or metal, indie, whatever. Nothing else is good enough. It's somewhat of an art not to veer off into asshole behavior towards someone whose opinions are counter to yours or whose opinions are more flexible. I find this true of a lot of types of fans. There are the casual music fans who might know only the hits or most famous songs. There are mid level fans who know a little more, but never did a deep dive. Then there are the die hands who know every obscure detail and b-side. I think the mid level fans are the.most likely to be the worst type of fan.

I'm a real fan of AC/DC; Van Halen; Pink Floyd, but I strongly dislike David Lee Roth. However, I have all Van Halen albums. I like Nickelback, but I play them for too long, just not enough variety. Bands I don't like, I don't collect. I collect music I like and I don't care what other think. I don't trash anybody's music tastes, but if you ask me if I like them or not, I'll answer you. If you don't like my answer, tough sh_t!! Also I'm not around a lot people, so I think I'm a real fan.

i was about to comment about The Beatles and then Anthony brought them up. i like several of their songs but the idea that i have to worship the ground they walk on b/c "they're legends" drives me insane. like they're fine.
actually i could say that about most "classic" bands esp older ones, the idea that just b/c they made an impact you're supposed to love/worship/be into those bands is insane to me. i understand that they have that status b/c most often yes, what they produced what noteworthy. but being 36 i get this a lot from older music fans, the idea that i'm supposed to worship these kinds of bands. people my age or even younger, unless you actively go find out the history of music, you may not know where things evolved from and my point is you can go learn all that if you want to or have an interest but the idea that i HAVE TO can fuck right off.

It all has to do with context. They were ground breaking at the time. But not anymore. IMO you can’t compare 50 and 60 year old songs to what’s happening today and claim either one are better. It’s apples and oranges.

Even Lemmy has himself said he never cared for Motorhead being classified as a metal band, although they technically were metal. He had said repeatedly in interviews, "We are Motorhead, and we play rock and roll." And Sabbath's debut album had heavy metal songs based on the blues, especially "The Wizard" and to an extent, "Sweet Leaf" from Master Of Reality had bluesy elements in it, although it was 100% purely heavy metal.

Brendon, I guess I'm an asshole fan when people compile a best of album list from the 70's and they leave off the Boston album for 1976. I never mean to be. I think a couple times I may have been an a$$hole fan in your comments section a few times. It was never intentional. I think music just inspires passion and our society these days someone always needs to be right and someone else wrong. I've never meant to be that way here, and if I have been to anyone or you I am sorry. I appreciate you and your channel. Love you and Anthony together. Peace and rock on!

Uriah Heep is a prime band for this topic. Lots of fans can't get by the David Byron era without David & Ken Hensley the band no longer is what they are. Sorry Heep is still going and making some awesome music. I have all era of the band and love it all. The die hard fans that say the band is nothing without those two members but pay money to go watch Heep live in concert just to hear the Byron era songs make me angry and don't care about the rest are not fans of the band. They are a David Byron fan. Uriah Heep has always been about founding member Mick Box it's band he has never moved on. Don't forget that Heep fans. When you ignore the later stuff with the band you are slapping Mick Box in the face. Uriah Heep would not be here with David Byron if he was still alive in the band what a train wreck that would have been. Love Uriah Heep now while they are still going Mick Box is not gonna live forever.

Bad Company fans (and the Bad Co. band members themselves) can be rather close minded regarding the Brian Howe era of the group. I love all versions of the band, including the Paul Rogers and the lone album done with singer Robert Hart. Yet some are pretty militant that you can’t like all versions of the band. I disagree and I will continue to listen and enjoy my Brian Howe era Bad Co. albums.

We all like different things and that's cool because if we all liked the same things, then this world would be a boring place! As for bands with different lineups, if you prefer the Bon Scott era of AC/DC over the Brian Johnson era of AC/DC, that's cool, but if you're trashing Brian Johnson, not only are you disrespecting the singer, but you're also disrespecting the band. If any band loses a lead singer, it's their decision to decide whether or not to carry on with a new singer. If it was the band's choice to carry on with a new singer, shouldn't the fans respect that decision?

My favorite is when I say I like Ghost, and someone inevitably says “they’re not Metal!!!” when I never said they were. They’ve never called themselves that either.
But even that doesn’t compare to being a Metallica fan who loves their entire discography, and not just what they did in their 20s. People have straight up yelled at me for that.
