Grew up there too! We had a home there from 1970’s to 2016. Malibu fires in 1993 almost got us and we evacuated then when it was just 40 minutes away from burning our homes down. We got lucky then. The homes on our street all burned down. Also, the two elementary schools I went to are gone, and the high school. Only my middle school survived in Brentwood.

I don't know anything specific about construction standards for safes, but from general physics knowledge I'd expect the safe to protect its contents from the direct action of flames, but, if exposed to fire for an extended time, to heat up until the contents eventually catch fire on their own.

The problems with safes were that even with the outside being sturdy enough, the air inside becomes superheated. If the safe is not allowed time to cool off inside, then opening it to soon will cause the atmospheric oxygen to combust on contact with the superheated air, instantly incinerating papers inside. It was a priblem with the 1906 SF earthquake fire. I would hope that there are now better safes that can cool off quickly, but I'm sure there still has to be a procedure for it.
