    Check this out: I also bought myself a $100 Gazebo / Pergola (200cm x 200cm) and placed it in my basement on a noise absorbing rug. I left the outside "walls" off and placed moving blankets on all five sides. Got myself a 10M led strip for the inside and some bass traps in the corners and foam on the inside off the blankets. Super easy set-up for recording with my D18 and singing at the same time straight into my iPhone using the Roland Go Pro mix. Call me cheap but I just love my little "tent" inside my basement. Nice and cozy. Love your channel man!!

    Damn Jesco! Have been following your channel for a while now. The way you share your knowledge and experience in such a simple but clever manner is invaluable. Hope you can keep up with this format, it's really dope!

    So glad I just found your channel. A year or two ago I went on a several-week deep-dive on acoustics to decide what I needed to do to my room. It took ages to dig past all the BS that self-proclaimed "experts" parrot from things they heard from bad sources and get to the real data supported by the realities of physics. Today I find your channel and you're immediately hitting on all the critical points, as they apply to home/project studios, distilled down to actionable steps. To anyone wondering - this guy is the business.

    I really like the new tweaked you tube format Jesco. Great how you stress the importance of compromise between all the different interference aspects in a home studio, like Stereo Phantom Image vs SBIR vs Sweet Spot positioning vs distance from the wall Equilateral Triangle theory. We all need to prioritise what matters the most in the grand scheme vs the allowable budget.

    Thanks so much for featuring and answering my question! It does make perfect sense what you're saying about it being easier to implement in theory but hard to pull off in reality.

    Put two subs in each corner of the front room. Measure with REW and correct with a mini DSP 2x4. Cross over at 100hz. Done deal. The more subs the better. Try one in the front and one in the back. Sounds crazy, but it works. Measure with each step and make sure you do it right!

    Great to hear you again Jesco, I've followed you for a while and I like the format of concise to-the-point Q&As. Have you ever review speaker/room correction EQ other than REW? In my (very small) home studio I've tried a number of the leading software products with mixed success. Many seem to sound worse, sounding dull and lifeless. I found MathAudio Room EQ, it is cheap and claims to correct frequency and time domains as well as phase. Personally, I find it retains the personality and life of my speaker as it is gentle yet effective in the fact it only cuts and does not boost. Anyway just an idea based on my own experiences.

    I liked the Q&A. If you do another, I’d like to know what you think about PET panels. I like that they are clean and recycled material but are they as efficient as mineral wool boards and are they cost effective? I’d also like your opinion on home made vocal booths. Are the acoustic blankets in a frame worthwhile?

  • @kadiummusic

    I’m about to convert a brick shed into a mixing studio. My main dilemma is that it has a sloping roof, 2.5 down to 2m. I could convert it into a flat roof and have approx a 2.4m ceiling OR leave it sloping and have approx a 2m ceiling. Does that 30-40 cm difference carry a big enough improvement to warrant having a less attractive building?
    Secondly, once the ceiling height is fixed do I use the Golden Ratio, Sepmeyer’s Ratio or the Amroc calculator (or a combination of all three) to decide the final length and width of the studio?

    Hi Jesco,
    I have used your simple home tools in the past. Although I still wonder how much "dry" a studio room should be? What is too dull-dead room or too less treatment? 200-300ms, 500ms-700ms? How would I know if I have overdone treatment? Maybe a comparative waterfall study will help.
    Thanks

    Hi! What do I do if my bass gathers in the center of my room but there isnt any bass in the front left and right corners? There is some bass that gathers in the back right corner as well
    (I have my room semi treated, i have cloud lifters and 2 inch panels for reflections). The cloud lifters are 4 inches really helps with my bass

    Jesco, I've searched for this question several times but haven't found an answer, anyone feel free to reply if you know the right answer. I can only get rockwool in 2 inch thickness here, it's no available in other thickness, can i stack various sheets in one panel and get the same effect as a 6 inch panel for example if i stack 3? If so, would it be useful to leave a little air gap in between each sheet in the panel, or better if their stacked right up against each other?

  • @31chh0rn
    @31chh0rn 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Jesco, in regards to SBIR one solution that gets thrown around a lot is flush or soffit mounting. This too greatly reduces the possibilities to position your speakers but at the same time gives space for really chunky absorption in the front corners and eliminates any frontwall reflections more or less. Is this a practical solution and if so, can you just test for speaker and listening position in the same way as with freestanding monitors before building the walls to flush mount the speakers into or is it always a gamble if the position is still optimal after the wall has been built?

  • @TimRae271828
    @TimRae271828 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Speaking of SBIR from the wall behind the speakers: is it beneficial to put a thin layer of acoustic treatment directly behind the speakers for that purpose in the case where the speakers are quite close to that wall? If the speakers are very close to the wall then presumably that treatment can be very thin - like 1cm or so?

    Any advice on sloped ceilings (single slope) or vaulted ceilings? There is little to no information online about what to do with that.

    • @youowemeapony
      @youowemeapony 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sloped ceilings aren’t necessarily a good thing or bad thing. The good aspect is it eliminates a few 90 degree angles, and the downside is a decrease in room volume (if you’re dealing with a stand 8’ ceiling) and the inability to accurately model and predict the frequency response without much more advanced and expensive software. The good news is that you can still get a measurement microphone and REW to determine what’s happening in your room, and you can probably treat the 45 degree angles of the sloped ceiling

    ive got vaulted ceilings on my left and right...the room is symmetrical and my bass response und 100hz is really good...the big problem is that i have some cancellation in the 120hz-180hz region and i dont know how to fix it...ive moved away from the front wall and that seemed to help, but im still missing that region in my ears for enjoying music...any tips?
    the height of the room is 2.05m and the vaulted ceiling are pretty big going down left and right

    Loving your videos! Would love to hear your thoughts on the Trinnov system. If you're not familiar it's like a really expensive hardware version of sonarworks but it also works on phase and time domain. I have a tiny square room and I'm starting to think this might be my only option to make it workable.

    The Q+A idea is good, but as someone who has watched a lot of your videos, most of these questions have already been answered in other videos. There was hardly any new information in this video.
    I would love to see a DIY tutorial for your diffusion grating that you use over your absorbers - or better yet, a tutorial on how diffusion is mathematically designed. Also a tutorial on studio design (when you have the luxury of studio construction from the ground up) would be really nice.
