I bought some Morgan Dollars and wanted to search the roll with you all to show coins we had inside. I purchased the coins for $2,405 (not quite $2,500) which was more than I would normally pay but wanted a few of these for either upgrades, graders or for my stack. There were a lot of nice coins in the roll but I do not think we got our full value back. What do you all think?

Great video Rob! I’m going to be completely honest but I think you overpaid by a decent bit on the majority of these Morgan’s. A great example would be the 1900 S which definitely has artificial toning. It looks like someone heated it up. It also looks like it’s AU details. You paid $350 for it but even straight graded AU 58 examples sell for around $300. AU 55 examples only sell for $200 and AU50 sell for bout$150 so it’s hard to see how that coin is worth much more than $150. All of the common dates were probably ms 62-63 examples which usually sell graded for about $50-$70 which is what you paid so you definitely paid retail plus. This is just my observation. You were very generous to the guy.

I own about 150 Morgan’s and I love looking at them…yes most of them are common dates and none of them have ever been graded (yes I do have some absolutely beautiful ones) but I sure do love them and enjoy looking at them. I also own 60 plus Peace dollars but there’s just something about the Morgan’s that are history in your hands!

So are we throwing these Morgans into the silver jar?? HA! I think you were more than fair in your pricing, and yes, I think you overpaid on some of the higher-priced ones. And I am not an expert by any means, but some of the coins look like they had the miniscule scratches that come from older cleanings--BUT, all in all, great purchase brother. (By the way, does Charlani know that she is forfeiting at least 40 Surf & Turf meals for this purchase?? Again. HA. Just saying.)

So, you bought each coin individually? I would prefer that than buying a roll if I could not see the coins. You need to know what to look for to make sure you get a decent deal. That is why I avoid buying raw ungraded coins.
I thought the details made the video length worth my time. its nice to knowhow much you paid. It would be beneficial if you told us how much the original asking price was assuming you negotiated.

$2,400 doesn't seem too bad. Some of those Morgans are on fire! 😍
If I had the discretionary funds, I could see spending at least that much for a similar roll. My Morgan collection has barely began (a dozen or so). I would have more, but I have multiple collections going at one time 😂
Just my opinion, but I think you made out just fine. As you know, collectors will throw money at a gorgeous coin. You've got several.

Without looking at the coins in person I take your word that these were cleaned and/or have other problems. It's always nice to see a group of Morgans in higher grade when there are some better dates included. In my Morgan collection I would much rather have an EF or AU if it's well struck or has minimal marks in the fields. But I will pass if the coin shows evidence of harsh cleaning or has more than minor bag marks. I've been lucky to have put a really nice grouping of Morgans together in 40 years. I took some of the better dates in high grade and sent them to ANACS for grading. Most came back as cleaned, although there's no polish marks on any of them. I will have to make sure that the executor of my estate makes good decisions when the time comes.
As far as what I need to complete my Morgans (basic date & mintmark, no VAMs), it's down to the scarce and expensive ones. The ones I will probably never hope to get, unless I come across a windfall, are the 1889-CC, 1893-S, and the 1895-P (no surprise).

Long videos of this nature are enjoyable. Keep making them! I’m not crazy about any of these Morgans myself. Common date Morgans should be exceptional, but these had just a little too much chatter/scuffing. Regarding the rarer dates, I would personally prefer a straight grade VG-F-VF coin over a details grade XF-AU-MS coin. Sometimes honest circulation wear can be quite pretty. If I see evidence of cleaning, my eye doesn’t see anything else after that.

What do you think the total resale value is of the set? Curious to hear how you thought you did!

Maybe give or take $300. I think I will make up on the common dates what I don't get on the better dates (overall).

I have 2 morgans. One in au condition, and one PCGS slabbed MS63, both are 1884O, the raw one is in my 7070 album.

Not big on Morgans but enjoy the content none the less. Informative grading aspect of information.
