Well, where do you find moral contemporart analysis of the Bible and other religious texts, that even involves the basic internal consistency of its main themes and contentions? Who sits down with the most basic tables regarding economics and examines if the said science of economics bears any relation? Who reads the Preamble to the US Constitution and asks if (as a people) we are seeking, approaching, or fulfilling such goals?
For his time, they weren't that Controversial. Many thought of Books as brain rot at the time. It's something we (humans) keep going back to; When a new form of entertainment is Consumed by the masses, Even wise men Start making foolish claims. Doesn't mean the core concept of moderation is faulty, but the alarmist spirit in which it was given kinda is. You can learn more from a bad book than you can from a good book if you are Diligent in its dissection. Learning what not to do is just as important as learning what to do. no, learning one does not immediately or necessarily give you knowledge of the other.
