Billy is right on the money saying that Grandma has to know who the bands are. I remember at one of my friends Wedding in 1996. My friends mother was dancing with us to Smashing Pumpkins, Bullet with Butterfly Wings. She was Grandmother at that time. She would have been 48 at the time.

Nothing more powerful than word of mouth. If an album is a great album, it will find it's way into the hearts of people. Like Billy said, Arcade Fire is in the cusp who wrote a fantastic nostalgic album about growing up and losing your adolescence. Obviously it hits home with me as a 30 something, but I also told my friends/family, etc about it and they all fell in love with it too(as well as the band). I'm sure in 10yrs, Today's 20 Somethings will also "Get It" too.

I love how he talks about quality when the last Pumpkins album was garbage at best. Its like listening to someone talk about themselves and not knowing it. I know a lot of grandparents that don't know what The Smashing Pumkins are or even parents for that matter. Seriously?

Here's an idea, what if the albums that come digitally can be opened up, you could click on pictures to produce images that represent the songs. Maybe written lyrics with artwork that would best describe the song.
An interactive album cover or something. Anyone know where I'm going with this idea?

I agree with a lot of what Billy is saying. I think that the death of broadcast radio destroyed the integrity of the old music industry model. I think the solution would be free satelite radio with commericals. If a large record company purchased a company like Sirius and then made it a free medium you could then pair it down to a smaller station selection. Then instead of state wide playlist they could offer national playlists.

Some of the things he's saying are agreeable, sure, but most of it is totally insubstantial and clearly just playing to an obnoxious crowd who has a crush on Billy Corgan. The bald guy from the audience also perfectly explained the problem Billy Corgan was so confused about when he mentioned the fragmentation of music, but Corgan doesn't get it; he just wants to insist that there are no good bands and no good fans.
