Straight up, just got back into the game after pft..17 years or so? Idk, ive dropped a whole stack but now I got my badass collection, super OCDified binders and all that jazz and I have no regrets. Its definitely a big initial investment but Im having fun with it, I enjoy the collecting aspect to an insane degree and I think it's a spectacular card game. Dantes comedia has been my shit since i was a kid and when I found out that theres a set based around that, I just had to get all the cards haha, then all the fiend cards, then the zombie ones! All I need is a playmat now, hopefully I can find a double playmat for cheap somewhere cuz I got my gf into the new speed duel thing. Any ideas where I can find a good double playmat? @@VaSoapman I see that as a problem if you only are restricted to 1 deck. This happened to me a little where my best-friend and I bought the box of Red Eyes / Blue-Eyes / and DM and split it to 1 deck each. after that we made our own decks. I had a worse deck so I made a better one to compete and my friend made a worse deck that was less meta-relevant to compete with my deck b/c they liked the playstyle of a worse deck. You have to work with your friend in honest discussion to have the most fun with neither of you going over budget.

I know this problem. I used to play with a friend something like goat format including some newer cards here and there. But then she decided to get herself the best hero deck available and i got OTK'd every time. So we agreed that i was allowed to side in my forbidden cards like pot of greed, yata and can use pre-errata effects. But it didn't make a difference. She enjoyed winning but after a while I stopped playing with her. It just wasn't fun for me to watch her build up the same board every time and hope that I could pull off the CED-yata-lock first turn as my only chance of winning.

As a YGO player who finally quit the game about three years ago, it was pretty liberating for me. I didn't quit playing TCGs, I just stopped playing YGO. The prize support from Konami was awful, the community is disgustingly toxic, the prices were rising, and the commute to tournaments just wasn't worth it. After not playing for so long, I eventually stopped trying to keep up with everything and it's nice to watch YGO content to see some ridiculous new card or mechanic, but I don't feel like I'm missing out anymore.

When I was a kid, I loved playing Yu-Gi-Oh! I collected over a thousand cards, watched the anime from DM to 5Ds and a little bit of Zexal and had some fond memories of playing it with my friends and my brothers. Then, as I got older, I stopped playing. I threw out most of my cards, only keeping probably a hundred random ones. I played one game with this person from college back in 2016 and lost outright. I went back into my exile from Yu-Gi-Oh, only getting random cards from certain people and the odd booster. Then, back in November 2019, I got back into the game. I saw this HERO Strike Structure Deck at Comic Con and decided to buy it because HERO monsters were my favourite. I then learned of this new game shop in my area who were hosting a Yu-Gi-Oh! tournament where you brought five cans of food as entry and gave up a can if you lost a round. At this point, I had gotten into MTG thank to my dad and was coming to terms with how constructed tournaments worked.
I entered, won a game or two with the HERO deck I bought plus a couple of HERO cards I had left over and walked away with some new cards. I then learned of how the format had changed so much. Decks now rely on synergy in a similar fashion to MTG decks. I went about the process of slowly upgrading my HERO deck, learning from my defeats. The last tournament I went to before Covid hit, I went 3-2. I've since upgraded my deck and am now looking forward to the next time I can play in a competitive environment.

I wish there was a movement in the community to make their own format, an equivalent to Commander in MTG.
The community could control the banlist (so no pushing broken cards then banning it after its bought out), the power level could be dictated on a social contract level (the goal of the game is fun), it could be multiplayer to fascilitate social playing and de-emphasize winning at all costs.
It's just infinitely strange to me to go from MTG, where Commander is recommended and pushed by nearly every player and card shop owner especially for new fans, to Yugioh, a game where everyone plays the equivalent of Standard, except where Standard is actually Legacy/Modern because there is no rotation but still has enough power creep to force you to buy the $500 dollar decks every year or so if you want to stay tier list.

I've played all three of the major TCGs(Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon) at some point. Each game has a different set of problems. The problem that each one shares is that at every tournament, you will end up playing against the same deck, multiple times, from multiple opponents. I tried to get back into Magic: The Gathering last year. I saw the same 4 card play order 10 times and tapped out.

    • @ResidentKlinton
      @ResidentKlinton 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@SporeVenom Lately, that kind of hasn't been the case. Between Mew VMAX and Palkia VSTAR, those were the top 2 by a significant margin upon their release. There also have been a bunch of other recent decks that have been meta-defining for a time (RS Urshifu, Dragapult, Shadow Rider Calyrex, and perhaps most infamously upon the transition to Sword & Shield, ADP Zacian), but I'm focusing on those two. They were the most successful and most popular. While both were the "definitive" meta decks, they did have significant counters. Mew had to watch out for Yveltal from Celebrations, and Palkia recently lost Internationals to Flying Pikachu VMAX of all things (which also counters Regis, another popular deck).
But Flying Pikachu could have lost potentially. That last round was crazy! A 4-card mulligan to the opponent and it still won the round and the match.
I sidetrack for a moment there. This is why I like Gym Leader Challenge in Pokemon. Things are more balanced, it's slower and more methodical and it's more possible to make a comeback in that format than in any current other format.
Of course, there are still type weaknesses, but every deck has a niche and plays differently. Fire has its strengths and weaknesses, Grass its, Water its, and so on and so forth, and players can plan for these and exploit them in fun ways.

Played many different TCGs over the years, and YuGiOh was my favourite for a long time. However, the community is precisely why I quit for good. Not even just the things listed in this video regarding the community, but just general commonplace attitude problems. I've never played any other card game that has such a high percentage of aggressive (even sometimes violent), obnoxious, narcissistic, thieving players.
For full context, I've never been to a single event, even local game shop, that doesn't have at least two problem people. It NEVER gets called out, they never get punished for their behaviour- We had one venue remove ALL seating because one player would always throw a tantrum and start hurling furniture. Instead of ban that player, they removed all seating. I've never seen this happen in any other TCG.
Every other game I've played has just been so much more chill, and even the "play to win" people are pretty chill. Very little theft, and any attitude problem players just get ostracised, never to return. It sucks that I had to quit my favourite TCG, but it simply isn't worth the constant headaches. The main problem seems to be a huge lack of maturity in the community, irrespective of age (younger players even tend to be less troublesome than the generic manchild types).

What he didn't say in the video because he doesn't want to anger komoney. If you are new buy singles off line and research prices people will try their best to rip you off in a trade. You don't have to trade everything, some cards are better to hold on to and over time if you update your deck slowly you can put your remaining cards in a binder. Sealed product is rarely ever worth it. Play for free online first to get a feel for what can work. Take a long time to understand rulings and odd situations so when they occur you are not surprised. Play with and be familiar with all meta decks as all decks will be based around beating them if they are not meta themselves. Don't expect to win all the time, winning 50% of the time or more should be the goal. As a new player I don't suggest buying the most expensive deck as it may get hit on the ban list, instead shoot for something in the middle that performs ok and will have some longevity in the format. It will also be easier to buy cards for as the demand for your combo pieces will not be as high as other decks. You can always upgrade later if you wish. When in real life ALWAYS shuffle the opponents deck thoroughly before a duel(do not damage the cards so do a proper shuffle), seriously some people have no morals. If someone is slow playing you may have to concede a duel in order to save time for the next one in the match. Make sure you have a watch on or something to keep track of time because people will scam you on time. The slow play thing is an issue that could be fixed with a stop clock or something in between turns but until they implement this we will have to suffer. Last thing, HAVE FUN. You don't have to be the best just don't be the worst.

I felt the theft part. I was like 6-7 when the anime came out and the Yu-Gi-Oh craze started, and I got a lot of cards over the next 3-4. Very early on when I was just getting the cards because I liked the show and thought they were cool but actual game concepts went over my head, some older kids in my community completely took advantage of my ignorance and convinced me to make terrible trades because they knew I trusted them (they were cool people when they weren't trying to get good cards). I got off Yu-Gi-Oh for a little bit, then got back into it when I was like 13-14, when my best friend in my new area started talking about it. I brought my binder with my 800ish cards to school and showed it to him, but again we were in school and our break and lunch times were different, so I handed it to him to take home and look at, under the condition that he not take any out, if he wanted to trade later I was fine with him moving cards he wanted to the back of the binder so we could do that more easily later... He held my binder for 3 days and made supposedly good and equal 'trades' without asking me, and of course these were ~800 cards that I hadn't looked at much over the years to this point, so for all I know he took 50 good cards and swapped them for 10 cards that were completely worthless. That took me out of Yu-Gi-Oh up until like my senior year of high school where I played some games during lunch with people who cheated their shuffles even though the games were no-stakes. Now at 26 I kind of want to just collect cards again, I don't know maybe I'll have kids that'll get into the game some day, or maybe I'll wind up with a treasure trove of cards I can sell if times get rough, I just kind of want to start collecting again, but I don't have much trust past that aspect anymore.

Thing is a shiny cardboard, especially card games are high turnover because new players are discouraged due to their being too many things and intricacies in the games also their Mechanics. Only people willing to have base in a card game may come into YGO I feel like YGO is the better game overall due to the games pace imo, it's really the only thing about the game everyone likes it's fast paced.
My problem is usually how toxic Yu-Gi-Oh players are usually. Most aren't super toxic to a new player, but once that player has noticed the toxicity they usually leave.
I think people need to stop complaining over things that just exist. There is a ban list, you don't have to follow it, if you decide to go to tourney then yes you have to follow it, cause Konami, but other than that you can add any rules you want, games are supposed to be fun, but their is always 1 of those people that turns everything into the fucking Olympics and that's the mentality most players have sometimes. My locals has players quit all the time and start playing other games, be that magic, Pokemon, DBS, or hearthstone, but they always inevitably come back.
There's a reason we're all Yu-Gi-Oh players, and not magic players.
Yu-Gi-Oh is a fundamentally different game than almost any other TCG on the market. Purely because if the lack of a resource mechanic. You draw your hand, and start playing. No need for Mana, or energy, or whatever the fuck hearthstone does. You can start playing immediately.
And the inherent slowness that all these other games have because of there resource mechanics is a major culture shock to Yu-Gi-Oh players that start playing them.
You can claim that don't mind these things all you want, but one has to ask "then why didn't you start playing magic years ago? Why stay a Yu-Gi-Oh player all this time?"
Simply put, they like the Yu-Gi-Oh style of play more than every other game. And that's why they always come back.
Hell, it's basically a meme at this point that "you never really quit Yu-Gi-Oh."
Even yuginono couldn't stay gone for more than a year.
So losing players to other games isn't a problem. The problem is, was, and will always be getting new players. The barrier for entry to Yu-Gi-Oh is so outrageous that new players are more incentivized to just give up before even trying than they are to try in the first place.
I've been trying to teach my nephew how to play, and doing so with mostly old school cards. No extra decks. Mostly normal monsters. A lot of trap cards.
And even that confuses him to no end. Explaining the mechanics of this game to someone who's never played a TCG before is nearly impossible. How do you explain timing to them? When they ask why "if" vs "when" matters and you just have to say "because Konami said so." It just pisses them off, much the same way it pisses all of us off.
The difference is, we're use to it. They aren't. And they won't put up with it if you can't give them a good reason to.
Paul is right in saying that if Yu-Gi-Oh ever does die, it'll be because of a lack of new players.

Pendulums and links are intimidating but easy to figure out with hands-on experience. I couldn't make heads or tails out of either mechanic until I started messing around with them on YGOPro, but then they just kinda clicked.
      But to describe them:
Pendulums are straightforward - just set your scales and then you can pull a YGOTAS Kaiba with all monsters who's levels are within those scales. So if you have a scale 2 on one side and a scale 8 on the other, you can summon every monster in your hand and face up in the extra deck who's levels are between 3 and 7. And then when Pendulum Monsters are destroyed (not banished, tributed or discarded), they end up in the extra deck face up.
Links are a little trickier, but they're also the most accessible extra deck monsters since their summoning conditions are HIGHLY generic. You basically just tribute the link materials listed on the card, and then summon it to either an Extra Monster Zone or a monster zone with an arrow on another link monster pointing to it. If you use a link monster as a link material, it counts as the same number of materials as their link value - to summon a monster that requires 4 materials, for example, you can use four regular or Link 1 monsters, a Link 2 and two regular or Link 1 monsters, two Link 2 monsters, a Link 3 and a regular or Link 1 monster, or a Link 4 monster.

    • @Jerry4281
      @Jerry4281 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@mageside The backstory of Kaiba in the Noah Arc tells you why he so protective of Mokuba. Gozoboro was a really shitty dad, plus Kaiba is the strongest duelist without a superpower why he calls Joey a fourth rate duelist with a third rate deck.
Joey isn't as skilled, but hes pretty lucky. Skill doesn't matter if you get lucky. (Reason Joey plays a gambling deck is actually kinda fucked up. Joey's dad was an Alcoholic Gambler in the original manga. This also one of the reasons he was a bully in the manga and to Yugi. Reason why his mom left them with Serenity not only cause of her condition which was still part of the Japanese version, but she got sick after they left then it became his motivation.
It was Toned down in the English version, but it was referenced during battle city arc when Joey left to go participate leaving his house. His dad had like a cold one and was lounging in a chair while watching TV. Also, Yugis mama showed up right when Yugi was leaving for the date with Tea.)
Kaiba is skilled, but he also has above average luck. Exact quote (from the dub) "I always draw what I need, and this duel is no different!" Against when he fought the Alantean villian with Yugi, only reason I forgot his name cause it was filler. Also, Kaiba was that Niño at the playground looking for 3 blue eyes white dragons

@Ragui Roussel Kaiba was overall a dick, in my opinion. He had an elitist attitude, I mean it was warranted due to him obviously being a rich a hole, but I still didn't like his character. I can respect him for his resourcefulness, intelligence and badassery, but his Elitist attitude gets in the way of that a lot.
Yusei Fudo is baiscally Superman/Goku they are without a doubt people who inspire Hope Truth and Justice. Which is why I love Yusei people says hes a Gray Stu, but he's a Protag and character I can look up to and inspire to be, an Intelligent, Strong, Dependable, a Badass, and kinda hearted individual. Funny thing is his parallels to Superman this rabbit hole goes deep my dude.

Never played Yugioh, but can totally agree that a lot of what he was saying happens at Magic tournaments and playing at locals. Theft, rule sharks, common decks at tournies, reprint, or re engineer cards (same basic effect, maybe a bit weaker then prior, at a higher mana cost). I finally quit quit MTG 12 years ago, as I just didn’t want to pay to play each new Type 2 series to come out. Didn’t become fun anymore.

    • @steviegreenthumb4720
      @steviegreenthumb4720 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I can defs see the parallels but just in my opinion ive just switched over TO mtg from yugioh and its been INCREDIBLY refreshing.
One of the biggest differences that causes issues is that Yugioh a)doesn't have official formats and b) will never receive any support for a community format from Konami themselves. Commander/EDH and WotC actually supporting it gives mtg a massive amount of freedom in that when players feel beat down by standard or whatever you have so many options to change it up.
Also, from what Ive seen MTG doesn't fundamentally change the way the game functions, where every new gen of yugioh has been recently. Its not enough to not have any resource system to limit what can be done in a single turn, they actually feed into some of the problems of the game to sell more powerful decks. Which you NEED to run the WHOLE deck if you have a certain card or whatever in yugioh just cause of how dominant the archtype stuff has become.
Most games don't make it past turn one at this point and Konami's bright idea was to give people extra summon zones and a mechanic to give them as many summons as they want for no cost.
feels like when a new mechanic is added to MTG its just treated like a new ability type, or something that doesn't actually break the flow of the game.
imagine if red deck wins could kill you before you drew your first card is basically the situation.

Just got back into the game after a 2 year hiatus and the part about stealing hits hard for me. There was a couple of people around my location (dont know if they where friends, brothers, or lovers) who shared a collection and would be pretty toxic. Most of there collection was made from cards they stole from Walmart and tried selling online, I know this because they would routinely brag about it. They where notorious thieves and even stole or cheated friends of mine. My town doesn't do anything with the game anymore and I blame them for this, before they started going to local tournaments we had a very large community and could have 60-80 people in at a time (where not a big town so honestly I couldn't believe the numbers when I first started, dont know if it's the same every where or not but for me that's huge) after a couple of weeks of there antics the numbers where cut in half, after a month there where around 10 people at a time counting me and the delinquent duo. After that the community was no more, it's hard for me to enjoy my hobbie any more thanks to two jackasses ruining it for everyone. So if you actually love the game then remember to respect your opponent, your fellow duelist, and your community. Do the right things and look out for each other. Remember that it's just a game, and where all here to have fun, and show off our skills.

It really is a sad reality, but I do believe the lack of new players, largely because of complicated rules and interactions, seemingly-arbitrary and confusing wording, and a rather high typical upkeep cost (to be competitively successful, at least), will be the death of the game, in the long-run.

    • @brtomassampaio

@Shawn Lamb as a Magic player I can say that “not quite” because (and I guess that’s a thing with all old card games these days) every expansion has its “thing”, such as: key words, cards that are OP but can be played since their strategy is on the weak side and lots of possibilities that people need to be aware that exist to counter.
So then, when there is too much generations gathered in one card game, and I mean ANY CARD GAME, it’s impossible for new players to know all that there is to know about the game without losing interest, and sure, with the ban lists you would think that they wouldn’t need to know about the previous cards, but the thing is, every new generation is an next step in the previous one, and that’s why there are cards with so much text lines, because every generation is a complexity upgrade on the previous one (to keep old player interested) and (as a result) this and other things (such as the very expensive cards and the constant ban lists) end up scaring away potential new players.
I’ve played my fair amount of card games to be able to tell this as a general concept, such as Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, Hearthstone and Shadowverse.
I believe that this games will slowly die, but that’s ok, because new ones will born from their ashes.

My #1 reason was not even on the list.
The banlist would be my reason #2 why i stoped from returning to yugioh.
    Background:
I thought after some years (about 4 years) i could play some yugioh so i went to my local (still 40 minutes with car) card store.
After sitting down with someone i knew i asked him to look over my deck if it would still be any good to play with.
He basicly put about 1/3 to 1/2 of the deck on a pile and sayed: "those are banned. You cant play them anymore".
Reasen #1 would be that konami can just come along with a reprint and change the text of the card!
All old cards with the old text are then ether banned or just handled like they have the new text on them.
Basicly what yugioh combines is the price of a physical tcg and the disadvantage of a online tcg.
One other reason for not playing yugioh would be the card text.
Maybe it is just because i played mtg for a long time.
But if a card text looks like this whole comment, then theres something wrong.
For example: in magic there is a creature effect named"trample".
Now when you look in the rulebook what trample is then you find this: An attacker with trample can deal excess damage to the defending player or planeswalker even if it is blocked.
Would it be so hard to shorten the card text a little bit?
"You can only activate this effect once per turn" could be "instability" for example.
    Well... enogh ranting :)
Wish everyone who has fun with this game more years of fun with it.
But it is simply not for me.

Although, it is nice to be able to travel for free, if youre trying to play competitively your honestly have to be doing it because you love to play yugioh. I got into Yu-Gi-Oh recently and as someone who is not willing to disclose their exact age online, *Yes*, Modern Yu-Gi-Oh is confusing and so much can happen with complete boards on turn 1. As someone who mainly played before Links were added to the game, it was a nice balance between fun and complexity but now it's just how many Link summons and hand traps you can get off per turn. Me and my buddies, when we play casually we don't use Link monsters as they just make the game broken in my opinion. I also happen to like Pendulums so I used those in my deck and the one time I went to my local card shop to game some Yu-Gi-Oh, I was asked why I run Pendulums and I just said that they were fun. He heavily disagreed, and refused to play against me. What sucked the most was that he was the only dude there to play Yu-Gi-Oh while everyone else was there for Magic the Gathering. I'm curious if you guys have any stories about how the complexity of Links and other broken archetypes have either enhanced or brought down your fun.

I have played this game since it came out in March '02 in America. What I loved about the game back then was how simple it was and there was back and forth card interaction. Traps actually were necessary and worked most of the time. The speed of the game was slow, but that was the beauty of it. You had to anticipate what your opponent would do next or prepare for a sortie come their turn.
Nowadays, it is nothing but hyper-summoning and making a negate board so the opponent has no chance to play. FTK decks are better than this. At least the FTK decks required a special hand to get it started. It became a gamble if the player could pull it off or not. These hyper-summon decks make the game for me no fun at all. I quit playing the game after Spyrals kept getting minced by the banlist, to the point the deck became useless.

Teach them! I taught my 3 kids how to play, and they love this game as much as me we have fun playing against each other's decks! Yugioh forever!

Why don't you just play for fan with your friends with "for-fun" decks ? Maybe without link, xyz, syncro, pendulum cards so basically using only the cards from the first 2 anime series ? They cost nothing now .

I've been playing yugioh since 1996 when i got my hands on the Japanese packs and starter decks as a little girl. However, I took a break in recent years but, came back this year around covid. I've gotten around 4 decks now all are budget. Dinos, Salamangreat, Shaddolls, & Sky Striker. This has been fun for me as I don't spend or break the bank.

I agree with that dude 100% as a young man with no money I was effectively forced out of the game YEARS AGO!
