    Ben Solo being a heroic, cocky and slightly clumsy Jedi. Might be my favourite moment of the entire film. It's such a shame we're never going to see him again. It's one of the great injustices of the Sequel Trilogy.

    • @SchultzDorinda

      It would've been a better development to end with Ben alive and Rey to stay dead. And have Ben move on from his mistakes, carry on the Skywalker name and maintain the balance of the Force (like making sure that the new generations are balanced between light and dark as he knows both ways of the Force)
      It would've given more meaning to the title 'The Rise Of Skywalker' if it meant Ben. Plus he could've named the new generations of force wielders Skywalker. Maybe even establish his future on Tatooine in his family's old home. That would've been a perfect conclusion to the legacy of the family of the Force.

      It really is an injustice, because they set up that he might have a happy ending where he gets to live and be with Rey and they'll never have to be alone anymore. Remember "You're not alone" and "Neither are you"? Yeah, TLJ knew what it was doing and what it wanted, but here it felt like he was shafted just to get rid of him because oh no, we can't have him alive it would be too problematic. Come on, it could have worked if they had just gone back to the writing and thought it through.

      But it is cool, and it's a small detail thats easily missed. It's reminiscent of real life sea warfare which star wars space battles where originally based on. Starfighters are like dogfighters in the sky and ships like ships at sea. One would have to take these things like gravity into account and they would have used arcing cannon fire to reach enemy ships. It's all just a bit of fun, a callback to what it's all inspired by and based on, a meaningless detail not meant to be scrutinized for realism but instead seen as a fun nod to the origins of all this. It in actuality does show that the people behind this care and have a deep knowledge of it all, they know the real life history and inspiration and are working off it. Lighten up mate.

    • @BestShifty

      The thing is the other capital class ships of Star Wars don´t have it, they fire straight. In my opinion it´s not cool it is dumb because it is in space. It´s my opinion, based on my observations. I´ve watched 8 and 9 once in the cinema and that is the impression they left me with. People that don´t know or care what makes Star Wars trying to make money off of it.

      That’s because Rian heavily deviated from the story outline that JJ and the original ep9 director wanted and Disney wanted to put everything into Rots that would “please” fans as much as possible. So this is essentially JJ trying to push the story into somewhat the direction he originally intended(Rey’s parents being important, a big evil bad, and Kylo getting redeemed) and Disney enforcing nostalgia bait(like Palpatine being back) in order to “fix” the damage TLJ made to the brand.

    I think Palpatine was literally all the Sith implying the Rule of Two means that once the apprentice kills his master they become one, slowly becoming stronger and stronger with each Sith master.
    But I think Rey meant metaphorically when she said she was all the Jedi. She has all the Jedi behind her helping her along the way and that good will overcome bad every time.

      @karmabad6287 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm pretty sure that's how it worked in legends. The whole rule of 2 thing was so the sith dont have to share power. There is one master with all The power of the dark side (litterally all the dark side force flows through him alone) and an apprentice is found who basically gather the dregs of The dark side power until they have enough to defeat their master at which point they become all powerful in the force. And then they take an apprentice if their own. This is why sith masters are so powerful and why the jedi were so easily defeated in past episodes. Their force power was spread thin because they shared it between many. Maybe I'm misinterpreting but that's what I've been given to understand.

      Yes, but at the same time, then they would have had to create more movies or something showing his redemption, removing any sense of closure you can get from this movie. Ultimately, him sacrificing himself was probably the best decision. If he hadn't, Rey would have died, and she's the main character, she had something to live for. Ben didnt. He'd destroyed everything he had ever known, and the only thing left was Rey.

    • @awakenow7147
      @awakenow7147 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@EXTREME_FLUFF They wouldn't have to explore anything in movies. Whether he survived or died, he would have had a complete redemption arc. He could have sacrificed himself, and then been revived somehow(ie another deus ex machina...because this trilogy is full of them anyways). His story has meaning either way. But the major complaint is that no Skywalker has ever been able to live a normal life. This is the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga, and they decided to end it in a bittersweet tragedy. This can never truly be undone. You might be fine with that, but it is 100% understandable if some of us choose to never fully accept it. This is a story that has been going on for almost half a decade now...and this is how it ends? We've already seen Anakin live an incredibly painful life, only to give it up in the end out of compassion. I mean...did we really need to see that again with Ben Solo?
      We all knew that the story of Anakin and Shmi was always going to end in tragedy. And when it was previously declared that Return of the Jedi was the end of the Saga, we had the complete closure of knowing that Luke and Leia would be alright. But now, we know that no Skywalker was ever able to have a life. And they were not ever meant to carry on peacefully in a freed galaxy......but a Palpatine was.
      Ironic.

    • @EXTREME_FLUFF
      @EXTREME_FLUFF 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@awakenow7147 I understand why many people feel the way you do. But perhaps the fact that it keeps that consistency of Skywalkers ending in tragedy is actually an important repetition. This boils down to personal preference, not bad story telling like much of TLJ. And that gives your view credibility. Think of it this way, however. The Skywalkers were born of the force manifesting itself to create life, more or less. It seems fitting to me that the Skywalker bloodline should end with that life going back into the force, meaning that the Skywalker lineage existed in one of the Galaxy's darkest times, but once peace and order was restored, they were no longer needed. Ending in a bittersweet tragedy has been a common part of story telling throughout all of recorded history. Why? Because it works. I thought the ending was well done, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.

    Lightspeed in it's infancy, mandalorian crusader clans and their war against the Old Republic, the first Jedi & Sith and their empires, the hundred year darkness, Moraband/Korriban, Sith dominance until their demise with Bane as the sole survivor, and going into hiding... Palpatine was an accumulation of the Sith, an immense power in the Dark Side. The Light Side spawned Anakin which created the path to the end of Palpatine and that Sith entity. Just some quick thoughts (spoilers)
    1. What happened to the rule of two? Palps stood by that ideology the first 6 movies, but discards it here in favor of a complete power grab.
    2. They often did something that would be a major plot twist, but resolved it a minute later. Such as when hux revealed he was the spy and he was killed a minute later, or when Chewie was supposedly killed but must've been on another transport.
    3. So many meaningless characters that could've been great, like lando or the Knights of ren.
    4. I liked when Palps said DEW IT, just a subtle quote that made me smile
    5. Great job with Leia, it really seemed like her character was meant to be that way in this movie

      1. He realized Bane was right for the era he lived in, but wrong for a time when the Jedi are more legend than reality. Also, greed.
      2. Hux was comedy relief, but he was annoying to basically everybody. His one honest moment was great, and then he no longer served any purpose.
      3. Lando brought in a little hero worship for the new kids, and had to play the sage when Poe was needed him. Also who else could round up that many people on short notice? Nobody knew Poe, Finn or Rey, but Lando, he's SOMEBODY; if he's putting out the call, it's endgame time.

      Also weird details that don't really serve a purpose the way the movie was cut! Like the thing that Finn was going to tell Rey while they were sinking (which apparently was that he was Force-sensitive, that you can kind of see later when he senses her in danger but no one explicitly says it), or Lando talking to that former stormtrooper character about where she came from!

    • @darkthorpocomicknight7891

      No. Palps never believed in rule of two. that was Plagueis. He killed Plage and it became rule of one. If you got that wrong Lucas did not do a good job explaining the rule of two ended BEFORE TPM.
      Chewie was killed in an original version but test audiences hated it so it was reshoot - hence the clumsiness.

    I think the “all the with live in me” idea is genius. It fits perfectly with the rule of two: a master and an apprentice. After the apprentice kills the master, the master’s spirit is forever bonded with the apprentice. This makes Palpatine’s destruction of the Jedi order the culmination of the work of hundreds Sith masters, rather than just one politician. Also I always thought the lucky kill of an apprentice on their master shouldn’t warrant the apprentice suddenly becoming greater than their master. If any of u played SWTOR, I imagine this phenomenon being akin to the dark side ghosts that follow the sith inquisitor.

      Rhaegar Targaryen the problem is dark side users can’t become ghosts it is implied that every sith has to keave behind a sith holocron regardless if they have an apprentice or not the apprentice surpassing the Master is not the culmination of all Sith being passed down to that apprentice because otherwise The Ancient sith won’t make sense the rules have been established to make sure the Dark side users aren’t that overpowered I love Legends but Lucas says himself he can’t have dark side force ghosts because that would literally be too much of a plot convenience for the Siths. The same way that even Jedi force ghosts aren’t allowed to interact with the physical during the Clone wars and New Hope but they had to retcon it for plot convenience which is dumb they destroyed their own canon rules for a pretty effect. As for the Rule of Two while Bane brought it about it also lead to the decline of Dark side users in the force but it helped other Siths acquire knowledge without much of a problem at the time the Sith were weak far weaker than the time of Darth Revan who Bane held as the strongest Force user to exist before Anakin; the rule was only meant to keep a power balance check within their order centralizing the power to two individuals who would inherit their knowledge not just their power and that apprentice’s goal as a master must then to cultivate his own knowledge and pass it down that was the rule but again sidious breaks these rules by gathering new apprentice every single time while creating the facade that he wants them to take his place he steals the knowledge accumulated but he never really shares any keeping only details that he wants manipulating even the rule if two to his side.

    To quote the prophecy of the chosen one “through him shall ultimate balance be restored” the keyword here is “through” through Anakin the corrupt Jedi were destroyed, through Anakin the sith (himself and Palpatine destroyed) through his Lineage, (Luke) the light was restored within Anakin and the Jedi order preserved, through Ben was ultimate balance restored through selflessness and compassion saving the one he loved, something Anakin could never do. The skywalkers guided Rey the ultimate dark being, to balance through their teachings. The skywalkers all walked a thin line between dark and light, and through Anakin and the Skywalker lineage ultimate balance is restored, and the Jedi order changed forever. Rey rebuilds the Jedi order with the Skywalker teaching, which will change the Jedi order forever. To quote another important statement from Yoda himself “misread the prophecy may have been”

    What did the Skywalkers do? They stopped Palpatine. They stopped the Sith. Without Anakin Skywalker being born, Palpatine would have taken over the Senate, destroyed the Jedi, created the Empire and ruled the galaxy for countless millennia. Without Luke Skywalker, Vader never would have turned back to Anakin Skywalker to defeat Palpatine, the Empire would have stayed in place and he would have ruled the galaxy for countless millennia. Without Leia Skywalker, the Rebellion never would have gotten the Death Star plans, the Resistance never would have been created, Ben Solo never would have been born, he would have never flipped back to the light in episode 9 and Palpatine would have ruled the galaxy for countless millennia. Without Ben Solo coming back to fight with her, Rey would have given in to Palpatine's wishes. And he would have ruled the galaxy for countless millennia.
    Sure Rey struck the final blow, but I believe that without any single member of the Skywalker family, Palpatine would have had unchallenged, unlimited control over the galaxy for who knows how long, and the centuries old war between Jedi and Sith would have ended with the Sith completely victorious. The Skywalkers weren't perfect (Vader). They made a few mistakes along the way (Kylo). They wanted to give up (Luke). But they decided to fight for what was right, time and time again. Sometimes without even using the Force (Leia). They all made a choice to be better. Anakin, Ben, Luke and Leia all sacrificed and redeemed themselves for their past failures. And in the end, they saved the galaxy. That's what they did.

    • @jaredjenkins99
      @jaredjenkins99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I guess that's what all of Star Wars is about. Redemption. A choice to be better. I mean, Luke, Anakin, Ben, Leia, Han (scoundrel turned hero), Obi-Wan and Yoda (failed Anakin but then taught Luke), Finn (trooper to rebel scum), Poe (barely), heck that's what Revan's character is all about, Bastilla too. There was a pivotal scene about redemption in the recent book Resistance Reborn. Anyway, it's just a great lesson to learn from Star Wars and I'm glad that it's present throughout not just the Original trilogy but almost all of Star Wars.

The irony would have been that palpating couldn’t keep himself alive, in my opinion. But that would be a minor theme of the film and would be open to interpretation. She was alive after Return of the Jedi for sure as shown in the end finale of Rebels. And she was 14 at the start of the Clone Wars, TCW was 3 years, making her 17, there’s a 19 year gap between the end of TCW and ANH making her 36, it’s 4 years to battle of Endor so by ROTJ she’s right around 40 I BELIEVE TFA is 30 years later (might be wrong at that number) and TROS is a year after Last Jedi making her around 71!! Plus Jedi live longer naturally through the force! So I think her death wasn’t natural and I hope we get a story on it!!!

    This really highlights the whole "art is subjective" thing. I actually agree with most of your gripes (especially the Palpatine stuff, although I still LOVED his scenes, I always hated the whole Palpatine clone storyline), but I loved the movie overall. Probably my favorite of the Sequel Trilogy. Yes, the movie has flaws, but I feel like it does a good job overcoming them to present a really satisfying movie overall. I think TLJ is the black sheep of this trilogy. I think if Disney would have given the whole trilogy to JJ so it could all be a unified story, the trilogy would have been better overall. Or, at least have given Rian Johnson a roadmap instead of just saying "do whatever man". Seeing other people's reviews isn't a bad thing, but make sure to go out, see the movie, and formulate your own opinions as well people. Love hearing your take on the movie though!

      I'm with you on this as well. I think this was the better movie though it could never be close to perfect due to the decisions that lead JJ having to come back and direct it after all that stuff happened. If someone watched all the movies up to this one and didn't know Palps was coming back it would be such a disruptive return. Some ppl consider Palps like another death star and a unoriginal villain.

      Definitely! That has been my feeling during the last week. It's not that I din't enjoy TLJ, I really liked at the time, but TROS made me like less. Not because it was a bad movie, not because TROS killed what TLJ built, TLJ doesn't have its place in Star Wars saga. If we could get the whole story JJ planned OR an ending Rian Johnson planned, it could have worked. Two movies completely disconnected was such a shame, even though I really liked how the story turned out in the end.

I think the endless bashing and nitpicking really changed this movie from one that could have been really enjoyable to just pretty ok. After rewatching TLJ, I think RJ and JJA always had the Palpatine stuff planned since day one and it was meant to be a shocking reveal at the end of Act one or two of this movie but the haters caused Disney to panic and blow the reveal to try and appease the fans. For the question of “what was the actual point of the Skywalkers?”, with the way TROS ended, I believe that the Skywalkers were the inspiration for the Galaxy itself to rise up and finally decide to stand for themselves rather than let an Empire rule for them. This was certainly not explicitly explained, but the way the whole galaxy turns out to fight the Final Order implies this, at least in my opinion. I hope a future book expands on that idea but it would have been nice to see it in the film.
    Overall I agree with many of your points and also enjoyed the movie as a whole, but I wouldn’t rank it as low and the Palpatine stuff wasn’t a huge deal for me as I thought it was handled much better than in Dark Empire, although not explained well.

      Yeah, if I had to say, based on one viewing, where this leaves the legacy of the Skywalkers (other than the fact Rey may go on to make her own legacy as a Skywalker), I'd say the Skywalker family is a story of love and redemption against the odds. The fact that Luke and Leia, Han, and Ben ultimately give Rey the love and trust she needs (even as part of the family of their mortal enemy) to turn against darkness is an inspiring legacy. Even at the end of TLJ, this was probably the likely outcome, with Luke being the 'spark of hope'...
