People forget that as much as Almunia is labeled as a donkey for the time that he was at the club he did have his moments as a good shot stopper. He always had a blunder in him due to his positioning & decision making like when deciding to come or not to come for crosses & getting beaten at his near post twice in the UCL Final in 06 etc. but he kept us in this game and we very nearly pulled off the ultimate smash and grab at the end only for Bendtners' poor first touch when clean through on the edge of the box. He could have even taken that first time. My heart sank & I felt physically sick when I was watching that live and realised that the chance had gone a begging 😟. Terrible decision to send Van Persie off as well.

@MM-dm4xj In terms of the gap in quality between the two sides on the night it would have been but any side that managed to beat this prime Barca team who were certainly one of the greatest sides of all time in the first leg and manages to hang on for dear life and weather an onslaught at the Nou Camp in the second leg when missing our main CB (Vermaelen), having to replace out first choice keeper in the first half and having to play the vast majority of the second half with 10 men after our main goal threat (Van Persie) had unjustifiably been shown a second yellow card has fully deserved and earned there right to go through. Sure look at how Chelsea knocked them out of the semi finals the season after despite there abysmal domestic campaign.

@@oisin5684 Sure Arsenal did reasonably well. But if you consider that Barca scored one goal that was incorrectly disallowed in the first leg and should have had a stonewall pen in the first half of the second leg then the ref helped a bit otherwise it would have been goodnite in London already. The sending off was a joke but lets not pretend it was just Arsenal on the wrong end of dubious calls.

Although Messi was behind Villa when the ball ricocheted back off of him and into his path, the fact that the ball went forward and that Messi was ahead of the entire Arsenal back line at the point of contact when the ball came back off of Villa means that it was a legit offside. Had he received the ball from a sideways or backwards ricochet then it would have been a perfectly good goal. As for the Diaby challenge on Messi, it was a foul alright although I'm not entirely sure that it was in the box. Although Messi's feet are planted inside the box it's touch and go as to whether at the point of contact in the upper thigh region when he checks back inside as to whether it's actually inside the box or not. Even on the replay it's inconclusive to say with any certainty. Either way the point being is that you needed any kind of break that you could get playing against that incredible Barca side at the Nou Camp and when that clown of a ref decided to send off Van Persie for having an attempt at goal only a second after the ref blew his whistle for an offside that he couldn't hear in a stadium of 95,000 roaring spectators we were always facing an uphill battle when you look at the grand scheme of things. We were also missing Walcott & Song for this match who were big players for us at that time to make our task all the more difficult. That red card was an absolute dagger to us at the time. Disgusting decision.

Sorry mate but that piece here is simply incorrect. Not only do you seem to have a misconception of the offside rule but there was also no direct involvement of Villa so I suggest you rewatch the scene. Messi's pass to Villa hit Koscielny and bounced back to Messi who at that moment was not in offside position. Then there was another release to Pedro who was onside, Pedro shoots, goalkeeper saves and Messi scores who at the moment of the shot was behind the ball- No Offside and perfectly legit goal which was stolen from Barca. Again, Arsenal was even lucky to have something to play for at the Nou Camp.

I don't share your viewpoint. I think its pretty clear its in the penalty area, even a foul on the line is considered inside the penalty area as the line belongs to the box.
