- Here's an update to the Oblivion video I posted a few years ago since the front seat view has changed quite a bit with the addition of The Smiler.

This is the fastest ride at Alton towers at 68mph and the tallest with the drop being 55metres tall. It is the 3rd fastest rollercoaster in the uk and was the first ever dive coaster to be made in the world. Sure she may be short but give oblivion the credit she deserves- an awesome ride!

If it were fully above ground then it would be the third tallest coaster in the UK (180ft) behind Stealth (205ft) and Big One (213ft)

I love how simplistic the design style of this ride is; It's a short steep ride designed for an intense burst of adrenaline, and a perfect compliment to the ridiculously elaborate new neighbor

I know right, my friend forced me to go on it with her... SCARIEST THING EVER... And it was only a month after the smiler incident, and so I cried whilst on it. But afterwards you feel so achieved!

I just love the impact sound Oblivion makes when it enters the black hole
This was my first ever ride, and I can still remember waiting at the top of the drop and my friend going "oh shit" just before we went down. The queue was honestly the most scary part of it because it has loads of old TVs telling you all the thing that could go wrong or that are bad on oblivion.

Had a similar experience with Baron 1898, my first (and only) dive coaster. This dive coaster has a misty pit and you can hear ghosts singing, which makes you more anxious. The queue was long so I had more than 60 minutes to watch the trains on the coaster go round and round. Inside there are pre shows on which basically tell you; you’re doomed. Ended up loving the ride after being really scared at first.

Yes it's short, yes it's very old, yes it's not as good compared to today (Although still a brilliant ride imo ) But what we need to remember is this was the worlds first dive coaster. It was new territory and cutting edge back in 1998. Thanks to Bolliger & Mabillard's success with building Oblivion at Alton Towers, we now have all of the fantastic dive coasters we have today :)

Oblivion is like the first ever phone and then came the iPhone or Samsung. I mean oblivion is the mother and basis of vertical drops. It might not be as big but it's the first that's what makes it special.

At least you got to experience the ride and not have the fear of climbing over it thinking the ride would start with you stand on the ride not your seat while you were trying to get out because you might of had a panic attack like me lol
Don't forget that this was the first of its kind, while short, it's all about that drop. And that drop is so much more impressive in person than it looks here. This is one of those rides that you climb off with tears streaming from your eyes and a huge grin on your face. Then you run around to the 15 mile long queue walk (usually empty-ish now) and jump straight back on.
Whole thing takes less than 20 seconds but it's the best roller coaster I've ever been on

Went on this yesterday actually for like the 9999th time, its not actually bad cus the drops like 2 seconds and you can pose for the camera if you know where it is still funny tho.

Out of the many MANY times I have been to Alton Towers (Like every year) This was the only ride I had not been on until I went with friends and we made a deal. They come on Rita I will go on Oblivion... So they did so I went on it... When it was coming into the end bit and it was stopped I asked my self why I was so scared to go onto it before.
Best ride ever. I felt my feet rise in the air and my heart drop watching this 😂

Been on the great ride many times. Still bloody gets me in the queue and going up the lift hill. All time great, simply love this thing.
For anybody who has a stomach for these kind of roller coasters I would REALLY ! reccommend either nemisis or maybe .. The teacups ;)

Are people so dumb not to realise this was a prototype (which are usually quite costly as they tend to be word first so include all sorts of new equipment, mechanisms and software).
Thanks to this coaster it helped B&M design more extreme versions of their vertical drop coaster. This is very common in the industry, a few examples include Raptor - Gardaland, Vid Sivinet - Bon Bon Land, Revolution - Six Flags Magic Mountain.
And please rest easy tonight to know that at this time Alton Towers made their money back on Oblivion, there marketing campaign was huge!

The first ever rollercoaster I went on :') I remember when I was about 10, I got dragged on to this kicking and screaming by my Dad. Can't thank him enough because now I have 0 fear in rollercoasters now :D
1:19 The actual "Alton Towers" shown in the near distance makes this ride such a classic. Such beautiful scenery before the ride petrifies you with gravity defiance! If I do go to Alton Towers again someday, this will be *one* of the first rides I will do. When we went in 1999 (just a year after it opened and thus far our only visit), me and my sister were too young to ride it, and so us and our parents just spent long hours watching others ride it (and *wishing* we weren't them!).

this is a classic, and tbh it still beats the newer ‘improved’ dive coasters. for the first of it’s kind, it’s brilliant. The simpleness of it is great for the ones unsure about it, and too many extras would just make the ride too much, and it wouldn’t be as frightening and exciting. It has just the right height, drop and speed. It’s definitely one of the best at Alton, and my all time favourite. The theming is great, and the anticipation makes it ten times better. You feel amazing once you’ve done it

can i just mention that when you’re falling that it’s like a solid 5-8 seconds and it feels like an eternity

All haters remember that this is a worlds first. The worlds first vertical drop roller coaster. Of course other rides are going to supercede it later on in time. But then they are just copycats with no imagination.
I would say Oblivion, although not the best in the park, is good at least once, because you get that initial scare factor of a massive fall. Then there was also that woman who got her seatbelt unplugged during the drop and she got more than she bargained for, the video is on TH-cam somewhere!
Sheikra felt lame after the first drop. The second drop especially was super lame.
A dive coaster shouldn't need more than the dive itself.

I seriously don't remember the wait at the top being so short. I remember waiting up there for so long and being actually vertical for way longer than it seems in the video. One of my favourite rollercoasters I've ever been on

Went on this ride in 2002. I still remember the acceleration on that drop. Unfortunately, I only went on once because it was out of order for the rest of the day, but I'm glad I experienced it.

I went to Alton towers yesterday with my mum and a few friends, I was very skeptical about smiler especially because of its dark backstories. Other than that I had a wonderful time and tried to have as much fun as I possibly could even though I didn’t get to go on exactly all the rides.

Absolutely! Go on everything at least once and if you don't like it you never have to ride it again. Also Nemesis is the best Coaster in the UK and one of the best in the world, you can't miss out on that!

Alton Towers pioneers everything. From one of the first inverts, the first dive coaster and the first flying coaster. Now they have the coaster with the most inversions. Britain is lucky to have such a great park

Never rode it, but i remember being salty for 2 hours waiting in the queue and I didn’t even get to ride it while my parents did.
I've been on this ride at least six time. Nothing compares to the fear of being dropped, never mind being held over the edge, just like this ride. It's 100% a experience everyone should at least feel.

I went on a school trip to Alton Towers in year 9 and I went on this. I sat the front. The plan I originally had was to keep my eyes closed the whole time but... when the ride was at the stage of wating for the drop on the edge I opened my eyes but little did I know it was too late to close them again because the ride dropped! I screamed so much and I’ve never screamed that much in my life! So glad I went on it though.
As a thirteen year old, I'm going on this soon and I want to prepare.
Been on this twice in the past, trust me the wait is scary and drop is too but its very fun!!!
