That was a very good point that you made at the end... "any function that the OE determines to be security related"...that is a BROAD statement and covers multiple modules and multiple functions in most all modern vehicles 👍👍👍

Hi Sam can you program an infotainment control module on a 2013 Volvo xc70? I got the vida software to install and trying to move forward it seems like a big pain in the butt… so I thought id check with you before trying to move forward… dealer just told our shop 3-4 weeks before they could get it in? Seems crazy to me that a local Volvo dealer don’t have a tech with a laptop just itching to do programming all day long , or maybe they do and they are that far back logged with programming jobs…

I work for community automotive and I recently gave your number to Andrew and he had contacted you about something else… it’s after hours now and didn’t want to bother you, today on a Friday. so I thought maybe I’d message on here and maybe if you get bored you’d see this and respond… I talked with opus and they are willing to try it but apparently the file is massive and you need a speacial usb drive to put the file on that’s encrypted because Volvo wants to make sure no corrupt files are getting loaded into there cars is the story I heard from them….

Would you not have to receive an update for this change to affect your tool? What about those who do not update there tools they currently have. They will still be able to do most models would they not? I have no idea how it works so I am asking.

I am not sure how it's gonna work. I know some scan tools can have a forced update anytine it's online. So I guess if you are worried I would make sure it's not connected or updated. We all know this is a short term solution for a long term problem though

So I'm going to need a locksmith to change a pcm? Why not make locksmith mechanics? Who is going to pay the extra cost to have a locksmith come in to do a transmission program? Small shops and a lot of mobile mechanics will be out of business. Plus the cust to repair a car just tripled. Way to go. But the solution is in our hands, and no one wants to talk about it. This will not stop theft at all. Why all this nastf talk about aftermarket tools and no talk about the problem? Every time I bring this up everyone runs the other way and side with nastf, the issue is the law and this is only a rule. Law changes is what makes a difference not a new rule to screw the honest hard working individuals. I see this as a kill the low competitions so big business can profit more.

      You're absolutely wrong
If that's the case anybody can go by a km100 and steal your car that you think it's hard to steal😂 and the locksmith license is just a piece of paper anybody with 300 bucks you can get it and misuse it to cut keys by VIN and then come to your house and steal the car😂 This is basically the bridge and to fill in the gap between the people who steals cars and the actual security professional that does it for a living I like it it's amazing it's boring all these bumps and shade tree mechanics out of business because they actually mess up the car worse when they work on it then when we work on it from the get-go

@Autodoc91 first of all to get key codes you need to be a licensed locksmithand have a nastf security credential. Second, would you explain to me how my next-door mechanic can replace my water damaged bcm without having to call in a locksmith and charge the custumer the extra 300 for the locksmith? It's all good on paper but in reality it's not going to work. Third, new tools coming out faster than you can type this message that does the same thing and are not complying with nastf.
Forth, the only way car thieves are going to stop robbing cars is when the law changes and actually charge and jail criminals and thieves. Fifth, immobilizer tool manufacturers can also stop the theft by providing a 24 hours access to turn off any stolen tools. Sixt, the immobilizer manufacturers can also implement checks before activating tools. So this new nastf rule will only hurt the small machanic shops that don't have a vsp credential and raise the cost for car owners. Do please explain how it's going to stop thieves when you have 10 manufacturers joining but 50 popping up that are not joining?

@@Autodoc91 If mechanics get their background checked and they get registered to do key programming, then NASTF will know who worked on a given stolen vehicle. The problem is that VSP license is impossible to get for some people.

@@SS-U23 the question is how is this going to prevent thieves from using other tools to steal cars? And mechanics would just pass the cost to customer from what ever the locksmith or vsp holder would charge. It's hard for me to see how is this going to stop thieves. The only thing I see is the cost going up for consumers.

Any insurance in particular that will insured a mobile mechanic to get the vsp license? Thanks

Is it true that they will require a business license, insurance, and a locksmith license to perform immobilizer functions? If that's the case, my tool will be useless because I'm not willing to jump through all those hoops.

Since nastf covers US and Canada I would think it will be US and Canada. That is an assumption though
