Someone pointed out a while back that Manny and Owen are basically inversions of each other. When it comes to ethics, Manny gets almost everything wrong (or, I guess, "wrong" depending on how you judge someone in the apocalypse). He's willing to torture, he's cool with murder and doesn't feel guilt afterwards, he's willing to murder innocent bystanders if it keeps his people safe. But, on a small-scale interpersonal level, he gets everything right in how he treats his friends. He's protective and supportive, looks out for their emotional needs, and doesn't offload any of his own issues onto them. Then on the flipside, we have Owen who always wants to do the "good" thing on a grander scale. He's opposed to torture and murder of bystanders, he's bothered by the Wolves' treatment of the Seraphites, and he wants to join the Fireflies so he can make the world a better place. But, on a personal level he always seems to make the selfish choice. He flirts and cheats with Abby when he's with Mel, abandons his friends without even saying why, and puts Mel and their baby in danger before ultimately causing their deaths. And it's interesting because it's often the strength of his moral convictions that lead to him treating his friends like shit, while it's Manny's lack of moral qualms that allows him to be so supportive of his friends. They're not directly set up as foils, but the parallels are interesting.
