I watched every Real Madrid game I could during that time, Owen was class and seemed to score every time he played

@@Ray29292 I'm from Italy and you saying Owen didn't deserve the ballon d'or is just laughable. Owen was a very very good player who unlike 99.99% of English players actually proved himself at league, continental and international levels. He was a player who hit the ground running the moment he was given the opportunity despite his tender age, and excelled in that season when Liverpool won 3 cups. I can only assume you didn't see him play. For sure the English league was not as strong as it is today but he would be scoring even more goals if he was playing today.
Owen did good in Real Madrid. As a substitute he scored more goals than fan favorite, Raul. Only Ronaldo was better. Owen's stint in Madrid is underrated and theories that Real destroyed him are false. His downfall began when he moved to Newcastle and of course injuries.
No one else would’ve realistically taken him after Madrid other than Newcastle. Therefore he decided to throw the toys out of the pram at Newcastle

Anyone that knocks this guy didn't see him between 17-20 years old.
Won the balon dor by winning 3 trophies at Liverpool that year, won the fa cup by himself, scored a hatrick vs Germany in Munich. Michael owen was unstoppable that year , and he had injuries at 21/22 that took his main asset away from him, his pace never the same player even though was still a very good goalscorer
Very much so, would be England's all time goal scorer if not for injuries, those first 2/3 years he was unbelievable
He was the greatest young talent ever other than real Ronaldo who won Ballon Dor at Barca when he was 18. Michael scored 200 goals for LFC and he wasn't even 23. He's incredible.

How many players can say they played with ronaldo Zidane figo Carlos ect… he was one of the best. If he didn’t have those injuries he would of accomplished so much more. He did very well at Madrid.
He wasn’t awful for madrid, he scored some goals off the bench but at the end of the day injuries got the best of him

This is like when Lippi bought Robbie Keane for Inter as a teenager. Seedorf said he was unreal in training. Keane playing with Ronaldo, Vieri, Zamarano. Lippi gets sacked and Tardelli didn't rate him at all. Great news for us and he joined leeds. U can't pass these opportunities up. Fair play to Keane and Owen.

He would have been injured anywhere. One of countless players who cannot keep the fitness levels up. At least he won a lot regardless.

@@fingmoron cannot keep fitness levels up? like its his fault? lol he was overplayed between the ages of 17-21 and his body was absolutely shattered. He had a terrible injury and the surgery was not what it is today and it ruined his career. Not his fault at all.

At the end of the day his injury proneness was an asterix to anything he can say on reflection now, because I'm almost certain he would have suffered from that whether he'd stayed at Real, gone back to Liverpool or whatever.
He was half the player he used to be by the time he left Liverpool, no different to Torres. Hence why he went for £8m instead of £30m+ which he would have done a few years earlier. Also the game changed completely in the mid 00s, striker who ran in behind basically went out of fashion for the lone centre forward with two wingers like Robben or Messi in the frontline. Injuries played a big part but they're not the only factor.

Sorry Michael you went there as an adult and it’s not so hard to get set up in Spain - especially when UK was still in the EU. Training finishes very early for footballers so you had it easier than most but decided to live in a hotel for 5 months. The club’s fault? Hardly.

I think people who watched football during 90s and 2000s got the best off it I mean I can’t remember then many good players at one time but I think cristiano by the time he’s finished his career will be known as the Ronaldo there’s no question about that. Brazil Ronaldo was out this world but his career was very restricted through injury I think if he was playing now with the knowledge and science they have he wouldn’t have suffered the way he did same as Owen.
Ronaldo’s peak is significantly higher than Cristiano and if it hadn’t been for crippling injuries he’d be seriously challenging Messi for the title of best ever.

Ronaldo Nazario was still scoring goals for fun even when not fit, if he had not become riddled with injuries and stayed in shape he would have more then like scored a lot more at the top level. Not saying he’s better or worse then CR7 but never underestimate how quality he was back in the day.
