The Highest rated College QB to ever enter an NFL draft.
He was phenomenal in college. I was lucky enough to see him play Arizona State in Tempe. He had the game won but ASU drove the length of the field to score a TD to win in the last few seconds. Just an absolute rocket.
Amazing even 40 years later still the highest rated player to ever enter the draft.

ELWAY is My Favorite Quarterback to Watch By Far!!!!!!! So Fun to Watch with a Great Attitude. Strongest Arm I've Ever Seen! That 64 Yard Touchdown Pass Against USC , that may have Traveled 70 or More in the Air I'm willing to Bet has Not Been Replicated by Anyone. AND WON'T BE.
One of the greatest plays Elway made isn't in this highlight reel. In fact, I've never seen a replay but I remember watching it live. He was surrounded by four or five Arizona defenders 10-15 yards behind the line of scrimmage. In fact, I couldn't even see Elway because of the number of guys they had around him. I was SURE he was sacked. Somehow, miraculously, he found a small crease between two of them and popped out. He then rifled a pass that probably traveled 25 - 30 yards, when you take into account he threw it to the other side of the field. The actual gain was only for about 8 yards, which is why I assume you don't see the clip in highlight reels. But, it was probably the second greatest play I ever saw from him (USC pass to Margerum being number one.)

Elway's throw to Margerum, against USC in 1980, was the greatest display of arm strength I've ever seen at any level, at any time. The most startling thing is how little time it spent in the air.
65 yards on a rope, at sea level in an opened stadium. His velocity is unreal, most qbs can throw it far but lack the velocity.
@@user-ru9lt4wg7j --Well said, but it was more like 70 yards when the cross-field angle is factored in. I'll add that Margerum was knocked onto his back catching that long throw, and the great Ronnie Lott was left short and flatfooted because he was simply _sure_ that Margerum was way beyond range.
@@cardinalRG I remember reading that during the play Lott told Margerum that Elway couldn't throw it that far.
@@TheTdonovan --I read that too. Many defensive backs had to learn the hard way that Elway could make throws they'd never seen before.
That 64 Yard Pass Sums up the Greatest Quarterback to Ever Play the Game- #7 JOHN ELWAY. Speaking on Velocity, I wish We could know how Many Miles Per Hour some of Elways Passes were. Just Mind Boggling.
He was 4 years too late because Bill Walsh might’ve drafted him. He got to play the west coast system in his mid to late thirties with Mike Shanahan. He put up good numbers even though they were a running with TD.
I read somewhere that half of Elway's interceptions were bounce offs. He threw so hard that the football bounced off the receivers' chests and was intercepted.
Greatest QB to ever play in Pac 10 ….he along with Marcus Allen and Charles White are the 3 best I ever saw in the Pac 10!

It’s amazing the amount of talent we had, and never went to a bowl game. Paul Wiggin had no idea what he was doing and certainly no how idea how to use a unique weapon. Love seeing all these clips of Vincent White!
The offense was fantastic, of course. But, the defense was simply horrible during that period. Had Stanford had an average Pac-10 defense in the early 80s, Stanford would have routinely been a top-25 team.
What I found most remarkable about that period, and really most seasons of average or subpar play spanning decades, were the wild swings. The 1982 team that upset #1 Washington and beat Ohio State in Columbus lost to San Jose State by 22 points. Not unlike the 1990 team that upset #1 Notre Dame in South Bend but got shut out in Eugene.

A couple years back you mentioned doing a highlight reel for Todd Gurley after Marcus Lattimore won the poll - I'd love to see you do that, because all the Gurley reels on TH-cam aren't as in-depth and have bad music.

Never got Stanford to a bowl but tied #1 USC in 1979. Best top 5 Oklahoma in Norman in 1980. Beat top ten Ohio State in Columbus in 1982 and beat #1 Washington in 1982. Stanford lost two games in 82 in the final seconds after Elway put them up in the last minute.including losing on the most famous play in college history.
Till this day, I still have never understood why John Elway went to Stanford……he could’ve went to any school in the country USC, UCLA, Texas Ohio State powerhouse programs, not a average team like Stanford. I don’t think he ever went to a bowl gamein his four years at Stanford

Your illustrious highlight career will only be "legendary" if you finish what you started.. a full JOHNNY JOHNSON highlight reel (at least 3 minutes) with "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits playin' in the background, and of course the live game commentary when available (It would sound good over the music!) ..take it as a challenge. You already said you had most of the highlights, now just put them together like only you can and make magic!!! People wanna see it, believe me.. especially with this big Pacific North West TECMOBOWL Tournament coming up in June.
I don’t think there was a closer prospect to perfection at qb than John Elway in 83. Luck, Lawrence, Manning, beats all of them.

My 10 year old son is a huge alpha stud with a giant arm already and on his way to pleasant valley highschool in Chico which is Aaron Rodgers alma mate. Next Im pointing to Standford. I got him the Standford sports copyright circa 1981. Brady is also NorCal. Can't believe more folks don't know about the best place on earth right now. Maybe Oregon is the future idk. Follow after SF joe Montana in the end. His name Jordan Tucker lookout in 12 years 😆
