Swiss guy here. The nice road section after Andermatt is called Oberalp-Pass. It's actually one of the multiple places where the Rhine springs from. They mow the grass for the cows or other farm animals. When the weather allows it, they leave it on the meadow for a while so it turns into hay, which gets stored for winter, when they need to feed the animals who are indoors most of the time. This also means that ground erosion isn't as much of a problem as it would be if you wouldn't care for the meadows. Bonus: It always looks nice and clean.
They need the grass for feeding the cattle when they have to stay in the stable, e.g. in winter. This grass will be dryed and this gives hay. Farmers here relay on that. Glad you liked the road I used to ride.
I love your videos through Switzerland. (if this is Switzerland) It's so.. quaint and looks so refreshing. They really make me relaxed and put me in a GREAT mood. I actually love watching these in the evening and I go to sleep totally day dreaming of bike adventures. I went a 137 miles today on my Ninja 300 with my girlfriend haha. We went on a 400+ miles little trip earlier this summer. That bike is incredibly uncomfortable two up I will say. Very lacking in power as well but hey First Bike problems. I think it's hilarious from watching your channel at 10,000 subs with angry London traffic rants. Now to just.. surreal trips and events. These edits constantly refill any lost motivation and just show what happens with hard work. Completely dismissing any obstacles I've had in a month that idiots would sit around and gossip about. I've had some confidence issues with just going chasing certain goals. Like "This is different from what others are doing am I sure this is the right decision?" To being "These goals fit what for what I want to accomplish and for what I hope to achieve." Baron Von Mentor, showing that in order to fail you first need to go for it. Your success is motivational to me.
That's the road that starts right in town in Andermatt. It really is a fantastic place to base yourself. Many passes very close. Ride all day: Furka/Grimsel/Susten loop is 120 km...of that 100km is twisties.... drink beer at night. Repeat...
Hey man don't listen to the people asking for videos of you moaning, the better of us can see your life has changed for the better over the last few years and you've become much more positive with your life and it reflects on the great content on your channel. These people are the sort that want a moan about something that, they themselves could change but they're lazy arseholes that will never reach there goals. The channel has adapted to you and its superb .. keep it up man !
I know I’m late to the game but I just love these videos... something I’m now carrying with me on my own rides, specifically last weekend’s 1100 miler. The Moto community, the tears of joy, the talking and joking to oneself aloud in the helmet. It’s what we do and thanks so much for sharing yours. I need to start recording!
We did almost exactly the same road trip just one week befor you, i'm prety sure i even touched the same gofer as you at furka. so funny seeing all the same roads again. Thanks Baron
I remember watching the Baron's first 'international' bike trip as it were. Now he's zipping all over the place and making me jealous. Definitely have to plan a bike trip in Europe, fantastic roads and scenery.
Nice to see this road when it's not closed and covered in snow! Just stayed here last week in December to ski, and this route was closed. Though we were on holiday for a ski trip, I could tell this would be a good area to come back to with my motorcycle group in the summer months. Andermatt is a pretty young town, most of it constructed within the last decade. Looking forward to warmer months so I can return here!
Another great Vlog Baron. They cut the grass and use it for winter feed for the animals due to the amount of times there is snow cover. Great management of the enviroment
Very cool vid. I missed the Alps this year. I think they're making hay with that lush alpine meadow. They need lots, cattle indoors most of winter. It grows so quickly in the summer, they can harvest it a couple of times.
You passed through Somvix which is where I am from in Switzerland. This road I have been on countless times with my mother and father driving. I love this region very much.
Vexoro nailed it. I usually spend a few days in Andermatt each summer riding the local roads. You probably missed a spectacular small road that goes along the Rheinschlucht from Flims to Bonaduz on your way to Chur. Add it to your list. Trivia bit - Bonaduz is where the VorderRhein and HinterRhein come together to form the Rhein. Great videos - It's nice to be able to sightsee when someone else is driving. ;-)
ok first off its sooo awsome to hear you say the names of swiss villages hahaha so funny 😂 secound the grass cutting is no legaly required but the farmers do it to get straw because the animals cant eat any grass during winter because there is snow all over the place. That's also why they all drive subaru's 😊 awsome vid man!
Chris. I think you will find that they cut the grass in the summer, because in the winter, all the animals are kept in sheds, and that is for their food. Also, in the summer, the animals go up in to the high grazing, so the grass down low can be grown. (spent many years teaching skiing in bavaria, and that was what happened there.)
And again: one of my personal favourite rides this one! Baron, if you're perhaps not gonna be able to really move to Switzerland, at least come riding here (with us) more regularly! Thanks for the great vid.
In 2014 I stayed Chur on the way home to Sweden after a week long tour in Italy(car, mx-5). It was pouring almost the whole way and we needed get home quickly so we stuck to the motorway. It was still beautiful and breathtaking. The hotel in Chur was pretty nice too and it was lovely little town even though it rained like hell.
I hope actually this is just an intermezzo and we will have 2 or 3 opportunities again. Last year I was riding Grimsel, Furka and Oberalp mid November :)
I can't believe he didn't make the connection with the cattle that were there, that they would be needing hay to feed them, especially over winter with all the snow in those mountains. Makes grazing a bit difficult.
Just found these vids. Making me nostalgic. Try what you say about community. I got punted into by a mad mini driver on the road down to Genoa. Local bike stopped to help, got the drivers number and took me to his mate who fixed my missing foot peg. Bikes are the best type of people.
Lovely ride, much better than the motorway! 3:18 Train! They are mowing for hay! I think. And they mow that way to help with water retention. Although they probably don't realize the latter. LOL When you mow across a hill the grass grows thicker because it retains more water when it rains. I do remember some things from school. (Grin) Also if you let it fall back on the ground it serves as a mulch shading the roots. (Gee I'm on a roll. I can hear the professor going on and on about this....) Age is not limiting, just a tad slower is all.
The best route for sure! What really struck a chord was how you said it was "so clean". I actually get distressed when I come back to the UK and see how much rubbish there is everywhere. Maybe you could do a vlog about that - ask people to stop ruining their own "back yard"?
thanks baron for another great video. after watching an earlier video of yours me and a friend took ourselves off to do the susten pass check out 2 mates 2 thousand miles on you tube. just sorting another trip out have you any suggestions
They are cutting the grass to make hay for the winter months. Not a lot of usable land here what with the mountains and built up areas, hence farmers must utilize every inch they can. Sometimes even cutting grass on steep mountain sides by hand where it's not possible to get at with a machine. Nice upload by the way. Thanks.
Hey Baron, good little series so far, really enjoying it so far. Waiting to see if Innsbruck makes it into the final cut. I concur on the amazing views and roads. I moved to Innsbruck 12yrs ago from London. I wouldn't go back for all the tea in China. Brexit can suck it. I'm staying out here. Clean mountain air, clean drinking water better than bottled stuff, summer lakes and motorbiking, winter skiing/snowboarding and motorbiking with thicker gloves on. I encourage you to move to the mountains!!!! You'll love it... *London is a cess pool of thieving, lying, cheating assholes, who's only concern is themselves and robbing you blind.
when you went into that sharp hairpin right that was a "first gearer" did you use shift assist to go into first..i.e. clutchless downshift to first? I did it once on my RT but not sure if its actually a thing to do
Well, grass wise i think they are starting to prepare it to winter... it's common in Switzerland (i live here) But i really don't know maybe just maintenance. V
Concerning the grass thing, basically in Switzerland the farmers get money from the government to take care of the landscape, been watching all your vids, hope to meet you in switzerland one day^^
Omg! Me and my family where on the train at the front and we waved at you me and my brother weren't sure if it was you or not! Looks so weird seeing it from your perspective!
Great vid as ever Baz (apart from the boring insurance Q&A and the overt gaynus of the BMW R9T Scrambler vids) just slightly marred by elongated fanny fart exhaustive noise made by the GS
Dear glorious baron, two questions - is it a good idea to use anything under 1000cc for 100km long commutes every week? And will it start to have heavy maintenance around 10k like a 100k mileage car?
Baron, A group of mates and I are flying over from Australia to watch the TT next year then tour around Europe. Better to hire bikes in the UK or in Europe??
Beautiful ride and video. Thanks for posting. We're prepping for a bike ride on this route in early September. Just curious. what time of year did you film this clip. It seemed a little chilly

The hills are alive with the sound of BARON
They need the grass for feeding the cattle when they have to stay in the stable, e.g. in winter. This grass will be dryed and this gives hay. Farmers here relay on that.
Glad you liked the road I used to ride.
I'd soil my pants if I ever got to ride on roads half as nice as this. Amazing.
Mountains....!, clean and tidy country. Great videos and natural comments ... Many thanks.. God Bless

Besides the grammar typo I agree, haha.

I love your tour videos. Glad you just started a new one. We have to remember that road when we do our Spain tour next year. Keep it up!
Sweepers over switchbacks and as little highway/autoroute as possible. Another fine day in mighty fine countryside. Roll on Baron

Do love to see these alpine routes. Cheers!

Man this view reminds me of my Alp Trip I did just like 2 Month ago. I want to go there again :/
Sluty aha wen haben wir denn da? Hey Sluty :)

Epic footage man, places I hope to see one day and of course Baron commentary. Good jobbbbb.
Literally making hay while the sun shines Baron.
Very cool vid. I missed the Alps this year.
I think they're making hay with that lush alpine meadow. They need lots, cattle indoors most of winter. It grows so quickly in the summer, they can harvest it a couple of times.
Ever wonder where hay stacks come from?
Beautiful Film... I was mesmerized. I dig it.
Love this series of vids. Beautiful scenery coupled with excellent narration.
What a stunning ride, you're a lucky fella
Another great video Grumble, love the commentary .
I used to live in Andermatt. Now am in the sunny Midlands uk lol.
Love your vids in Switzerland, motivates me to to take my r6 home.
Absolutely beautiful and spectacular
You passed through Somvix which is where I am from in Switzerland. This road I have been on countless times with my mother and father driving. I love this region very much.
Thank you, Baron, for making me want to ride more. Get out. More.
Beautiful Barron. Loving your work.
So beautiful! Lucky Baron!

I've done that pass but the other way. Nice Cafe at the top where that lighthouse was.
They cut the grass because the cows need to eat in winter too ;)
***** There is no perpetual motion ;)
Thats how we ended up with mad Cows Disease last time, but yes winter feed is the reason for the grass cutting.
Guy Incognito hi Baron, really enjoy your videos in The alps. Did u ever Try italian alps? Whenever u come, pls let me know 😊
Plus they would be even more sorrounded by forrest if they wouldn't cut the grass
10:40 You actually drove through the romantsch part of Grabünden. (because you asked if they speak Swiss-German there)
Since your good friends with KTM...(as am i) Whats the chance of you doing a little review/ ride on the 690 SMCR?
ok first off its sooo awsome to hear you say the names of swiss villages hahaha so funny 😂 secound the grass cutting is no legaly required but the farmers do it to get straw because the animals cant eat any grass during winter because there is snow all over the place. Epic. Did exactly those roads last year on my way to Greece.
I seriously cannot get over the countryside over there, it's nothing short of spectacular. I see you're getting close to Kangaroo country as well ;)
lol z
That looks like the A19, in effect the oberal pass, done it a few times on the way to the furka, a great road indeed!

Welcome to Switzerland +BaronVonGrumble. Btw this was the Oberalppass.
great video and glad you had a great journey in switzerland!
I watch your videos and dream of mine coming up in June. Loving every minute!

Ah the Oberalp Pass. Lovely! The Lukmanier Pass is fantastic too btw.
Stunningly beautiful!
The road surface looks brilliant
Your videos are awesome man! Strong work!
'Look how neat everyone's grass is....well not that fellas' so funny :-)
Top waffleage. Looks like a good road. Might have to plan a visit next year
You're making me miss the local roads. It's the end of the riding season here :(
I hope actually this is just an intermezzo and we will have 2 or 3 opportunities again. Last year I was riding Grimsel, Furka and Oberalp mid November :)
They'd be cutting for hay Baron
I can't believe he didn't make the connection with the cattle that were there, that they would be needing hay to feed them, especially over winter with all the snow in those mountains. Makes grazing a bit difficult.
This video was a real roadgasm.
Beautiful. Someday you have to come to the western US and see the mountains here. You'll shit and jizz simultaneously.
brilliant video as usual, loved every minute as I lay in bed getting ready for work. yep I'm jealous as hell😅

It's really stuck out to me too when I went to Austria. The UK is such a dump in places. :(
Awesome roads, BVG!
Didn't yo go and Yodel Buddy !! awesome views of Switz wicked ..
Have you ever ridden in north wales Baron? Pretty good roads for the UK!
thanks baron for another great video. after watching an earlier video of yours me and a friend took ourselves off to do the susten pass check out 2 mates 2 thousand miles on you tube. just sorting another trip out have you any suggestions

Lets have a look at your headlight protector on the GS, Baron. Not seen one like that on a GS before.
I dont know why bther are 2 thumbs down???!!!!!! Great video my friend I can't wait for my 2017 gs to arrive
Great videos man !
i did recommend you the mangart high road on instagram, but this is just something else entirely
love it, on my bucket list now :D
Still waiting on the extra footage from the Baron and Charley trip!!
when you went into that sharp hairpin right that was a "first gearer" did you use shift assist to go into first..i.e. clutchless downshift to first? I did it once on my RT but not sure if its actually a thing to do
Well, grass wise i think they are starting to prepare it to winter... it's common in Switzerland (i live here)

Should go to the Lake District, there's plenty of people doing out door activities there, mostly wandering around with hiking stick thingies.
It's really funny listen a gsa rider 😉 using the electronic gear box!!! I don't feel the only one NO MORE👍👌
Cutting grass for silage, for cow feed. Nice video. Thanks
Concerning the grass thing, basically in Switzerland the farmers get money from the government to take care of the landscape, been watching all your vids, hope to meet you in switzerland one day^^
You gotta love that auto blipper
What time of year was this Baron? friends and I are going for the last week in july and are wondering what to bring for gear. We're from canada.
Omg! Me and my family where on the train at the front and we waved at you me and my brother weren't sure if it was you or not! Looks so weird seeing it from your perspective!
The first road there is called Oberalppass :D
Greetings from Switzerland!
Great vid as ever Baz (apart from the boring insurance Q&A and the overt gaynus of the BMW R9T Scrambler vids)
just slightly marred by elongated fanny fart exhaustive noise made by the GS
I think Baron had a smiley pill or two before this video haha
oh mang, that scenery...
does your GS not have heated grips? (not gona solve a cold body i know, but can use thinner gloves still!)
Next time you head to Italy, ride the Via Chiantigiana through Tuscany. Nothing like the alps but good in a different kind of way.
Dear glorious baron, two questions - is it a good idea to use anything under 1000cc for 100km long commutes every week? And will it start to have heavy maintenance around 10k like a 100k mileage car?
Baron. What would be the perfect bike for this? Is there any other bike you'd prefer to be on?
JIZZY JIZZY BUM JIZZ LOOKS LIKE BARONS ENJOYING THE SWISS
Smells like Alpine riding, I NE'd
Baron, A group of mates and I are flying over from Australia to watch the TT next year then tour around Europe. Better to hire bikes in the UK or in Europe??
Oh, I wanna go ride in the alps someday!
What's in the turatech bag on your bars Baron?
Beautiful ride and video. Thanks for posting.
We're prepping for a bike ride on this route in early September. Just curious. what time of year did you film this clip. It seemed a little chilly
Hello there. Wich month did you hit these roads in alps tour? Planing on going there next year in middle of june.
Have you ever heard of something called "hay" Baron? Apparently it is something that cows eat before we eat them.
This trip can't possibly be at this time of year right? Can't believe the weather would be that good in October down in the Alps
This was probably in September. The weather was actually quite nice (~20° Celsius) until last week... I think it's starting to snow up there now...
that's what i am thinking. with editing and stuff. Been wondering since i plan to go around may/june next year.
Hey BVG, could you provide a google maps route for your days? It would help many of us plan that ultimate route!
