  • Fixing the problem when an old Märklin locomotive suddenly comes to a stop after a while or at high speed. The problem is in its reverse unit (relay), to be precise in its spring (Marklin 7194). In this video I will show you how to fix the problem without changing the spring. This is Marklin 3090.

Thanks for this informative video. Have several old marklin locs who kind of have this problem. Also one does not want to change direction but then jumps ahead only like in the last bit of your video.

I have 3 old loco, one of them is the same as yours here. They don’t run correctly anymore but they sometimes creep forward and backwards, but only for a few meters. They require at least 70% of power on the power source to move and as soon as I get over 75ish% it get stuck on reverse. So I’ll tune the spring correctly like you showed, but for the fact that they barely roll, do you have any idea if what’s wrong ? Track and power unit are fine in my opinion, because as soon as I put a little bit of current, the locos do a short slight noise, but doesn’t have the strength to go forward.

Sounds like they may need maintenance of the motor and gears. There are several things to check: The brushes may need replacement, the motor may need to be cleaned, the gears may need to be cleaned and lubricated with some clean oil. Due to the brushes wearing, the collector of the motor may have become dirty with the material coming of the brushes, which makes it harder for the current to flow through the motor. Also, the oil may have become hardened due to the collection of dirt / dust in it. A proper cleaning will make sure the contact surfaces allow the current to flow through the electric motor properly and for the gears and wheels to move easier, resulting in the locomotive needing less power to move. Look for videos about cleaning the locomotive to see how to do it yourself. It is not too difficult to do with the proper materials and when those locos run like new again, it's definitely worth the work.

My locomotive goes forward, but not in reverse. What is the fix to this issue?

If it is an old generation Marklin, Reverse switch may be broken or burnt out, I had the same issue, and had to put to brand new reverse switch. and the problem was solved.
