- This is a celebration of two extraordinary dancers, not a comparison. The idea was inspired by your very kind comments... I don't think I've enjoyed the creative process more than during the researching and making of this video. What joy these two incredible artists bring to our lives, each fully capable of transcending their own time, and each, without a doubt, sure to leave a legacy that will allow them to long outlive their own mortality.
Mikhail Baryshnikov from 1983, Sergei Polunin from 2014.

With all due respect, Baryshnikov is on an entire different level. He is not only masterfully dancing, he is also acting. He is not only executing perfect steps, he is telling a story. That and his presence, incomparable to anyone else.
And he lives in Canada 😉 something new is coming I saw his interview at Radio Canada!

I agree. Ballet is a gracefully and elegantly art form conveying a story. Imo, too many contemporary dancers have lost sight of the concept of what ballet is and have begun to compete in a gymnastic acrobatic sport. If I wanted sports I’d watch the Olympics but not ballet. In watching ballet I want to see the story and Misha knew how to tell the story.
Конечно, Барышников вне конкуренции! Его музыкальность, акценты, создание образа - уникальны, бесподобны! Для меня в балете есть Барышников и все остальные, среди которых есть выдающиеся, даже гениальные танцовщики.
И надо отдать должное - Полунин во многих эпизодах технически безупречен! Сергей - один из самых лучших!

Барышников кажется легким как перышко, как будто нет никаких усилий. А какой артистизм. Чудо

Барышников завораживает, я больше ни на кого не могу смотреть, а когда танцует Полунин, я замечаю балерин, антураж…
Оркестр играет в разном темпе. Темп той школы, когда танцевал Барышников, трудно повторить. Отсюда у Полунина торжественное исполнение, а Барышников - озорной, заводной, артистичный, владеющий сумасшедшей техникой! А за этим всем стоит колоссальный труд.
А по мне, та барышников не доделывает движения до конца, все в пол силы
Сейчас в 99% оркестр играет в более медленном темпе
А по моему мнению Полунин исполняет не торжественно, а скорее как спортсмен. Как то слишком атлетично. Для меня в Полунине не хватает искрометности, артистизма, только техника и физическая мощь. Барышников танцует и невольно улыбаешься. Таких как Полунин много, а Барышников уникален.
Let's be honest! We all saw Polunin in these ballets and his perfect performance. But there is some kind of a trick in this video, fake. If you look attentively, you will see deliberate random changes in speed in Polunin’s videotape. He's never danced like that! Anyone who has seen him before will understand what I mean. This change in the video is intentional. This hate towards him is because of his political position. Polunin, a ballet genius, in many ways better than Baryshnikov. But he is Russian!!! RUSSIAN and stays with RUSSIA! This is the reason to start to ruin his career. I will send him a link to this video. Perhaps he will sue the author or try to protect himself from dirty, hateful Russophobia!
Video with Polunin is intentionally altered! This is not his normal way of dancing, but changing the speed of the videotape. Ukrainian fake as always!
От Барышникова такое впечатление, как-будто он не поставленный танец представляет, а просто вышел и станцевал от души. Настолько натурально и с огнем, и всё это просто и легко. Вот прям сидел с друзьями, потом вышел к зрителям и, не запыхавшись, пошел дальше. 🎉 Жаль, что живые выступления мне застать.

Барышников см на 15 ниже Полунина. Тогда все иначе - вес, мышечная масса, центр тяжести, размах рук и ног, темп исполнения элементов. Поэтому Полунин выглядит более тяжелым и медлительным...

Полунин дОльше находится в воздухе, так как намного выше Барышникова, поэтому оркестр вынужден замедлять темп, ожидая его приземления. Вот и кажется, что прыгает медленно. На самом деле,- Полунин летит😊
У них разное исполнение, к тому же. Полунин усложняет прыжки таким элементом, как поднятие обеих рук одновременно вертикально, это намного сложнее. И вообще, это почти разные школы. Полунин годится Барышникову во внуки, так что это разные эпохи. Всё равно, что сравнивать какую - нибудь Кшесинскую с Лопаткиной, например.
А вообще, мы сравниваем известных, тех, кого зафиксировавла камера в своё время. А мне нравился Анатолий Бердышев. Но, его записей мало. Если бы не Плисецкая, то вообще бы никаких не осталось.

I agree. Baryshnikov is the greatest male ballet dancer I've ever seen. Doesn't he seem to float and at times to be suspended in the air? I remember seeing him live do a solo dance with a top hat at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA back in the mid to late seventies. He was amazing.

Mikhail doesn't dance. He floats. He flies. He's the perfect blend of the masculine and feminine, beauty and power. None can compare. The other dancer makes it look like work, which it is. Mikhail reminds us of the joy.

The thing about Baryshnikov is, his ballet appears effortless and he is mesmerizing. It’s impossible to look away from him.
100% agree he storms onto the stage. He also had a way of making ballet (male) ballet, butch. He commanded the stage with his performances and acted out his role in the dance beautifully. A truly great dancer.
And he is short. Biomechanics. Dinky like Mickey Mouse. Polunin commands the stage with his long legs and control.
Cynthia and Misha are equally matched in their acting/ability to tell a story. It’s glorious.
Sergei and his partner are excellent, it’s all about technique.
But who can compare to supernova Misha? Very few.

Baryishnikov is such a character actor, when shes flicking her leg, look at his expression, nodding his head. Little things mean a lot. He is my opinion the greatest dancer ever. His acting is incredible.

Both are excellent dancers, but Baryshnikov still takes the cake. I'm only a ballet amateur, but to me Sergey looks like a more technical dancer, more athletic & tense, while Mikhail is while also athletic, at the same time very elegant, effortless & very light. The way he dances it's as if he doesn't put any effort into it and it all comes naturally to him, he's like a feather, moves around as if he's flying.
Polunin dances but Baryshnikov LIVES on the stage!
Every cell of bis Body is living bis passion- and on top of it he was so. So much Open to Andy Kind of music and Dance moves - in White Nights everything wenn global - he starten a new dimenensio e in Dance music and honesty.
Polunin with his phenomenal jump and gigantic perfect body, which is much more difficult to handle than the miniature, graceful body of Baryshnikov,

Polunin is a master, and one of my favourite dancers of all time… which just goes to show how incredible Baryshnikov is. There is no match for his talent. It is almost otherworldly. I was lucky enough to watch Baryshnikov on stage in the 90s. It was like watching magic. He defies gravity. There may never be another dancer like him.
What about Godunov?
I've only seen 2 men defy gravity in my life & I'm almost 70, Him & a basketball player!😊
I was also so fortunate to see Baryshnikov perform on tour in Colorado in the 80s. His grace and strength are unbelievable -- and he's a kind and generous man as well
Part of what gave Baryshnikov his magic was his acting skills. He wasn’t just dancing to the music he was using his dancing as a tool to tell a story. Like Barbra Streisand used her voice as a medium for her acting, he used dance. He understood that ballet is basically beautifully executed pantomime. The performers are dancing instead of speaking or singing but the intent is essentially the same, to tell a story. Baryshnikov used every ounce of his being to tell you who that character was and what he was about. Nothing was ever clinical with him, every movement had meaning. His ballets felt like true theater, you could tell what the story was by the action on the stage not by the liner notes in the playbill. That’s a truly rare gift.

Frankly speaking there is no dance in Polunin’s performance
That is the same thing their teacher Alexander Pushkin tought booth of them, Nureyev and Barishnikov. I prefer the last better than Polunin, is much more gracefull.

Baryshnikov’s performances are so visually crisp in movement.
Baryshnikov is definitely the best! Polunin has a simple technique, it is clear that he is trying to do just as well as possible. Baryshnikov has a gift from God, and the fouette in the end is magnificent
Baryshnikov moves like a panther. His blend of power, stamina and grace is unmatched as far as I'm concerned. A dancer like him only comes along once every hundred years.
Baryshnikov wins hands down. Such elegance, ease and nicely centered.
Baryshnikov’s movements are so fluid and effortless. His timing is perfect and his dancing is so refined it is beyond compare. During most performances the focus is on the ballerina, but when he is on stage it is impossible to watch on anyone but him. A true master.
The difference between Baryshnikov and Polunin is like between dancing and gymnastics
I'm not throwing shade at Polunin. He's a superb dancer with tremendous control and grasp of the science of dancing. However, I've seen Baryshnikov in his heyday. No one and nothing approaches his sublime mastery of dance. He covers the entire length of a stage in breathtaking leaps and turns. His mastery of dance is only exceeded by his passion and humor. He takes dance itself absolutely seriously, but plays with the story adding excellent acting skills to his repertoire of achievements. When the scene is passionate, he burns; when the scene is funny, he clowns; but when the scene is sorrowful he will rip your heart out.

С детства обожаю Барышникова. Полунин тоже неплохо танцует. Но у Барышникова и темп быстрее, и энергия такая, и четкость движений. Барышников это конечно чудо!
Барышников, за счет роста и веса более прыгуч, стремителен и легок. Но, он сосредоточен на себе и партнерша часто за ним не успевает. Полунин - более высокий, атлетичный, его прыжки не так легки, но где-то более эффектны. Он отлично взаимодействует с партнершей, в его руках она просто взлетает.
Но прекрасны оба. Барышников - сгусток энергии, Полунин - ожившая скульптура. Спасибо за возможность насладится чудесным танцем.

It’s like watching master and apprentice. Barishnikov’s mastery is breathtakingly natural and effortless.
My vote for Baryshnikov, there's something about his dancing!
Мне кажется, это видео отлично демонстрирует разницу в мышлении и постановках хореографов прошлого и наших современниках. Барышникову в танце дано чуть больше времени на "точки", элементов меньше, акценты расставлены по другому. И за счет этого у нее остается пространство и время для того самого артистического маневра и самовыражения, которое безусловно делает его танец более художественно ярким и этим цепляет больше. С точки зрения количества прыжков в секунду - их безусловно меньше. Но зритель от этого только выигрывает. У Полунина наоборот: прыжков больше и просто не остается времени ни на какую артистическую доработку эффектной позы: он с трудом укладывается в музыку. Да, технически и физически его исполнение более сложное, но зритель от этого скорее потерял, поскольку у танцовщика не осталось времени и сил проявить свой артистизм. Имхо, технически и просто элементами перенасыщенный подход к танцевальным партиям - бич современной хореографии. Странное искажение ума.

It is more than just the choreography being at fault. Baryshnikov had better technique. It is more about ego with Polunin, not magnificent technique to go with superb artistry which Baryshnikov gave us in his rendition.

Argentina por aqui y lo mismo le paso al tango, se volvio casi "acrobatico" cuando el baile se conecta mas a la musica y genera mas impacto si es al "piso", con los pies pegados al piso y unos pocos trucos...
Se deberia salir de ese extremo y buscar un punto medio para una justa perfeccion

Polunin reminds me of Nureyev: technical mastery that was clearly hard earned, every move is controlled with discipline, the choreography is etched in his mind and muscle. While Baryshinikov looks like he was simply born like that, everything joyfully burst from him instead of him having been exercised into it. He makes it all look so stunningly effortless & natural. The man was a freak of the most delightful kind.
No one will ever compare to Mikhail Baryshnikov. He is in a league all his own. Breathtaking!

Vladimir Vasiliev is my favorite in this and many roles, and Irek Mukhemedov, too...just amazing.

Misha is the greatest, not only by his dancing and gracious technique, but for his acting in his performances. his elegant hands position, he make very difficult movement seem simple and effortles. He encarnates what dance is.
Well, for my money, Baryshnikov, despite time elapsed since this performance, still has more chutzpah. Plus he keeps his body together whilst jumping and turning...no limbs flailing around - control, precision and joyful communication with partner and audience. What a great dancer...
He is the superior dancer in all but one element: he is clearly outdancing his co-stars and it is obvious they are struggling to keep up. Polunin seems to match his overall performance better to his counterparts in the pas de deux and pas de tois.

Ничего не понимаю в балете, но Барышников как будто телепортируется из одной эффектной позы в другую. Это очень круто выглядит.
Барышникова удачно камера откуда-то снизу снимает. Поэтому и эффект такой визуальный. От Полунина камера дальше находится и снимает чуть сверху
Барышников мне напоминает игрушку из шкатулки.

В Барышникове сколько достоинства, изысканности, точности! Как чисто он танцует! В Полунине присутствует некоторая его собственная, внутренняя "ненайденность" и она заметна в том, как он воплощает образ (любой, не только здесь). Он талантливый, техничный, артистичный, у него широкой изобразительный диапазон - и пока всё. Барышников же танцует всем собой - случившимся, сбывшимся воплотившимся полностью. Он как есть - вот он. Невероятный!
Полунин! просто невозможно не влюбиться - с первого взгляда, бесповоротно. В то, как он зависает в прыжке. КАК ЛЕГКО И МОЩНО ПОДНИМАЕТ ПАРТНЕРШУ -- он прекрасен. А какой темперамент!.
А что там "невероятного"? Мужик явно обладает трудолюби6ем и способностью к бизнесу и продвижению себя, любимого. С такими физическими данными - низкорослый, кряжистый, растяжка ему явно с трудом давалась - вообще не понятно, как он премьером стал. Рядом с Полуниным - владимирский тяжеловоз.

Except, if you saw them in person, Nureyev. Not in specific technique, of course, but in the impact of the whole package - the stage presence, the passion, the sheer exuberance of their artistic generosity, the Mariinsky/Kirov elegance and restraint and clarity. Though Baryshnikov used to say, 'if you like me, you should see Soloviev.' That was also true! Polunin didn't come close to portraying Soloviev's heart-stopping skill and presence. You know what Polunin is wonderful but Baryshnikov is the perfection of his ballet skillmanship with the showmanship and panache of a Gene Kelly. It's simply unparalleled!! I have adored Mikhail Baryshnikov since I was a teenager; other dancers have come gone and more will appear on the world stage in the future, but no one will ever surpass Baryshnikov. His athleticism, passion, discipline and complete mastery of his body at every moment combine to create not only greatness but as close to perfection as it is possible to be. Polunin ranges across the stage striking poses and flinging his body to and fro. Baryshnikov is perfectly poised and appears to slip into his movements like snow falling on a calm night in the Russian steppes. Palunin belongs to the stage for this moment in time; Baryshnikov belongs to the world for all time.

If you focus on the beat of the music, you are left in awe at Baryshnikov’s control, passion, and beauty of his art. His timing is impecable and the energy put in his steps brings the Spanish in me to scream “Bravo y Olé”! Polunin’s mastery of Basilio’s role cannot be ignored, but lacks passion.

Novice ballet fan here. I've been watching many different videos, and I have not yet seen another male dancer who seems to me have the skill Baryshnikov had, or the appeal... When he is onstage I can't take my eyes off of him, even in a PDD (I'm learning the lingo lol!)!
Fascinating video. Thanks for your hard work putting that together. I loved your use of the musical phrases. This video feels so natural, and I appreciate the work it must have taken. With all that said, for me personally, Baryshnikov is still The One. Polunin comes closer than anyone I ever thought I'd see in my lifetime, but there's just a little too much "Look at ME!" in his presentation. Baryshnikov doesn't need to ask us to look at him. He simply IS. Thanks again and please know how much your work is appreciated!

Он именно танцует (парит над сценой, легкий, игривый, все движения ровно так как они должны быть, чтобы передать настроение). Полунин на сравнении как будто спортсмен, быстрее прыгнуть, дальше пролететь. Скорее всего я бы это не заметила без сравнения, но в нарезке прямо хочется сказать, что Барышников делает искусство, а Полунин - спорт высших достижений...
У Полунина какое-то нескладное сложение, что мешает восприятию
@@yoffen4359 и показано в разных декорациях и с разных ракурсов, и темп, да и рост у них разный, школы разные. а вы правы про Полунина, пожалуй, действительно спорт. Когда смотришь на него одного, Боже, какой прыжок! А когда смотришь в сравнении, на Барышникова, Боже, какой прыжок, какое приземление!

Полунин техничен, и если бы посмотрела его отдельно, была бы в восторге. Но Барышников гений. Он же не просто танцует, крутит пируэты и прыгает, он же образ создал, жизнью, смыслом заполнил каждый жест.
Мне показалось, что у Полунина сплошное самолюбование.
Вот вот! Барышников- это легкое,невесомое перышко парящее! Полунин- идиот, талантливый, но идиот!Он сам себя сделал, и бросил все в канализацию. Сначала мир восхищался им, теперь же смотреть не на что!
Барышников- ГЕНИЙ! И навсегда останется Гением!
Образ Базиля -парикмахера - да. А вот с образами принцев - сложнее.
Только ноги собрать не может в 5ю после поворотов. И двигается медленно и размыто. А про музыкальность вообще промолчу. Длинные конечности ещё не балет. (Тощая лошадь ещё не газель.)

Барышников филигранный во всем: точность, позиции, фиксации, легкость! Техника великолепна. А харктерность и артистизм -выше всяких похвал.

у Барышников присутствует филигранность отдельных элементов, но между ними иногда виден переход, как будто они по отдельности. И у него я вижу , как он работает. Какие-то паузы перед тем как поддержать партнершу. Полунин на сцене живет.

Polunin is amazing, but as brightly as he shines everyone pales next to Baryshnikov. There's just a grace and magnetism when Baryshnikov dances. Every eye can't help but follow him and his leaps are legendary. No one else could make something so physically demanding look so effortless.
There are ballet dancers, and then there's Misha. Beautiful technique, effortless moves, and a personality that brings the story to life. There is just no comparison ❤
I'll never understand how some people say they don't like the ballet. Beautiful. When Baryshnikov leaps it is as though he is is floating.

Барышников вложил душу, наполнил образ эмоциональной составляющей, а не только виртуозной техникой! То же самое можно сказать и о партнёршах. Партнёршах Барышникова - прекрасная балерина и актриса, а партнерша Полунина просто талантливая танцовщица. Впечатление совершенно разное.

Sergei is an extraordinary dancer and also Mikhail, however Mikhail was an elegant and graceful dancer rare to find these days in Ballet world
Having seen both, Misha is better, but both are excellent. Beyond technique, Misha danced with, and to, his partner- always connected. You were not just amazed by the dancing, but fell in love with his character. He often outshone his partner but never acted like it on stage.
You mean he actually acted the part not just danced and touched his partner when the situation required it. He was a true all around performer. He was dancing to tell a story not to show off his elegant lines.

Misha had that essential modesty onstage that put the team, the ensemble first and it elevated the whole production. It was especially apparent when you saw him live. In person, 1/1 he was in my experience a bit of a cold fish but his devotion to the art form, to his partner, and to ABT was worthy of the highest respect and praise.
Just CAN NOT take my eyes off Baryshnikov. I hold my breath without even realizing when he's performing. ❤
Безусловно Барышников, он живёт в танце, он лёгкий, элегантный, эстетичный, виртуозный , смотрибельный, его балет-классический, это не просто хорошо выученная и технически исполненная партия, это- полное погружение в музыку и танец, от того и смотрится на одном дыхании!
