I felt the same concerning Sylvie Guillem and Patrick Dupond. I thought they were electrifying together. I was never able to appreciate how much work they were able to perform

Thank YOU Michele. He is so beautifully aggressive when he dances. His traveling steps just eat up the floor, and then he detonates into the stratosphere when he leaps. He's a swashbuckling pirate, a ferocious king of the jungle, a prince who can, will, and does seem completely capable of coming to anyone's rescue. Paired with Osipova's ballet blitzkrieg you've got one hella power couple.

I'm sitting here grinning like a maniac. Thank you for giving me an option to wading through my entire DVD to find this---it's not marked well, you just have to sort of know what chapter markers it's around. I was reading comments last night on a compilation of Misha's "goblet dance" from Don Q, and what people were remarking on re Misha and 3 other excellent danseurs was that, beyond the technical brilliance, he had style and panache and a sense of connecting with, even flirting with, his audience. I could say that about Osipova and Vasiliev. Beyond technique that goes beyond brilliance, there's a sense of joy in both doing the movement and in inviting the audience into their happy world. Yeah, retired dance critic, gotta get my 2 cents in... Edit: Plus I really miss seeing them dance together. They're like a latter day Gregory/Bujones, each daring the other to top what he or she just executed.
Osipiva and Vasiliev at the height of their physical and technical powers! Is this from around 2012/13? The only thing that worried me is that if you look closely at Osipova's face during the final applause, she only just manages to smile. Usually she shines right through to the end of a performance.

Wonderful. Thank you Pam for posting that ballet that I didn’t know. They both are stunningly good. The only thing I can’t get used to is the applause of the audience before the end of the number. That’s something a French Audience would never do. For us it’s a lack of respect. But I guess the Russians have a different culture of that issue.
Flames of paris is a circus ballet were it’d be insulting from the audience if they didn’t clap the audience would tone it down in swan lake or sleeping beauty
It is very traditional of Russian public to aplode during solo's in ballet - it is sign of showing admiration and appreciation, specially if dancer performes difficult or spectacular element.

T'is, and yes! He manages to keep them pliable and rounded (in appearance) without losing a single thread of masculinity. He is completely aware of where they should be as well as shouldn't be at all times. Sometimes in ballets as full of bravura as Flames is, it's easy to fling the arms past their proper position. He never does. His hit the "concrete wall" dictated by the rules of ballet and BAM... perfection. He could be the poster boy for port de bras.
In up-close rehearsal videos from Royal Ballet, there’s something about Osipova that gives me the creeps; glad I don’t have to work with her. BUT I have come to admire her performances because you see a *person* dancing, not just a body. Which can’t be said for a lot of dancers.
He's no misha. He looks like a body builder misha was able to jump as high as him without looking like he was trying and a much better actor and great in comic roles. But I did see these two doing things together right at the beginning of their career and they were very impressive and enjoyed thier partnership very much. I find he always exagerates his expressions too much and is a bit ott. still that's his style so fair enough
Hmmmm, I think you're being more than a tad harsh about Ivan's talent. I adored Misha's personality on stage far more than Ivan's but with regard to his dancing prowess I find Ivan the equal of what Misha once was.
@@tiffcat1100 It has a lot to do with the cultural difference. I came to the UK almost 30 years ago, I was very young. The difference was and is vast. Like there is less oxygen to breeze in. No genuine sincerety and depth of feelings. I am sure she experiences it too. English people and the ballet are less emotional, less pure, less spiritual. Lots of caricature on true ballet. It's hard to explain. But it corrupts the soul and the talent.

We have no traditional costume, we take almost no notice of our National Day (which isn’t a holiday) & have no separate language (half the world speaks English). One day we will rediscover our identity & maybe then find the fire & passion for life & dance, music & self expression 😊
