    I recently bought one so here I am. Just using it a few times on my cheap knives first, it does work quite well.
    Keep in mind that the real knife snobs don't like any sharpening system that's easy to use so don't take their word for anything....buy one that's easy to use. Good video.

    Nice review, you forgot the one thing most archers will like. The three and four slotted holes inside the sharpener are broad head wrenches used to tighten/ loosen your broadheads from the arrow. Already own one and it is the best sharpener I have ever owned.

    FYI, Mora's have microbevels, as a example the Mora Kansbol has a 23 degree microbevel. Some people will grind out the microbevel but it's there natively as a result of Morakiv's manufacturing process.

    More tips- there are broadhead wrenches under the plates. You can clean all sharpening surfaces in seconds with a rubber eraser. You can store things inside it under one side. I keep a piece of eraser, a piece of strop compound, a ferro and waxed jute tinder inside mine.

    I'm not very experienced with sharpening, so I practice with cheap blades. I get them to a decent edge, but they don't pass the paper test. I figured I'd buy this Work Sharp Field Sharpener since it has everything I need and more. So I can get that sharp edge I always wanted on my blades. I'll test it out once it arrives, looking foward to it.

      I use Dico (brand) GRN or SCR Compound. Both work really well...jewelers rouge doesn't do much on any of the steels that knives are made of (it is used to polish soft metals...doesn't remove any metal). I can find the Dico brand compounds at Ace Hardware...it's pretty cheap (less than 5 bucks) and you get enough to last you a lifetime. Both will cut the fine scratches out of the steel, remove the burr, refine the edge and leave a mirror finish without having to strop half the night. I have the Field Sharpener and the KO Worksharp (owned both for several years) and love them both. Use a little (one or two drops) of olive oil (or something like it) when applying the compound to the leather strop (bigger strop...more oil, smaller strop...less)

    I use a set of Shar-pal credit card sized diamond plates wrapped in a leather strap coated with diamond stropping compound to use as a strop. The cards are 325,600 & 1000 grits, can be used without water or lubrication, are attached to a sturdy plastic card with a finger ring to help you hold them more easily and safely and they have a highly polished metal signal mirror under the folding finger ring. I keep the 325 grit one in with either my hatchet or machete and the 600 and 1000 grit in a small plastic container with a microfiber cloth and an artist's eraser to clean the plates of rust and dirt

      Good for you, I learned in the Scouts when I was even younger than you. It is a skill that comes in handy throughout life.
      I have been able to help many friends and even have been compensated for my skill especially by cooks in restaurants. Dull knives dont do well, but a sharp knife is a very important tool both at home and in the field. I even have a video that shows me shaving off a full, thick beard with a knife I sharpened.
      I am happy to know that you are developing this skill, like I said it is something you can use for the rest of your life. Check out my shaving video.

    If the knife or whatever is beat up, start with the coarse diamond, then the coarse ceramic, then the fine diamond and finish with the fine ceramic, then the leather. Is that right or do I have something mixed up there?
    Thanks!

    • @SubjeckMark23
      @SubjeckMark23 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll be fine with just coarse diamond, fine diamond, fine ceramic, and leather strop. Coarse ceramic is for initial sharpening of recurve blade...at least the manual says so.
      In my experience, coarse ceramic is still a little bit finer than fine diamond.

    • @jessmorris2243
      @jessmorris2243 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The order should be from course to fine in order. Ceramics are generally finer than diamond. So course diamond, fine diamond, course ceramic, fine ceramic, and finally the leather strop.

      I use a pink rubber eraser. works fast and clean, for either grit, the ceramic, or if the strop gets caked and flakey with metal. I store it inside. the plates are held with magnets and has broadhead wrenches built into the frame under the plates. I also keep strop compound, a ferro rod, and thick hemp twine soaked in parafin (fantastic waterproof instant tinder when you fuzz it out)

    20 degrees is steep for both sides, that gets you a 40 degree inclusive edge. That’s thick
    A scandinavin grind is about 12 degrees per side, or 24 degrees inclusive, which will give you a far sharper edge. But durability is lost, so you need an increase in steel durability, cpm 3v or cru-wear, things like that. But this sharpener is perfect for everything. Great video!

    • @Thetoolmerchants
      @Thetoolmerchants  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, not sure what you mean by "drid"? In my experience, if the knife is not too dull, you can start with the medium diamond or the "coarse" ceramic (the side with the ridges). If your knife is still pretty sharp, you can also simply use the smooth ceramic rod or the leather strop to realign the edge, as you would with a honing rod. So, no, unless your knife is very dull or damaged, you don't need to use all 4. Hope that helps. -Matt

      i am talking about brand new knives mora companion and HX OUTDOORS

    • @Thetoolmerchants
      @Thetoolmerchants  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to Worksharp the coarse diamond is rated at 220 and the medium diamond is a 600 grit. The ceramics are not rated but if I had to guess I'd say they are 1000 grit and maybe 12-001500.
      I'm not familiar with the HX knife, so I can't say how sharp it is. The Moras are usually pretty darn sharp out of the box, though the bevels are not perfectly flat. That said, the field sharpener is not the best tool to flatten the bevel on any knife b/c it is so small, a full size bench stone would be better....

    I believe the course ceramic is about the same as the fine diamond and can be skipped - It is there in case you have a highly curved blade that can't be used on the diamond plate.

    The work sharp video said the ceramic angle is 17 degrees to put a micro bevel on the blade.

    Thumb studs also irritatingly get in my way😒had to extend the sharpening toil with a round diamond needle file on my kershaw to accommodate the field sharpener 😂

    You can’t use the ceramic on a knife with a finger guard.
