    Something that i learned when using this is that i like to put erasers on my ceramic rods to get the metal off of it, i also like to put the plates through water to get the metal off as well from the plates. the goal here is to increase the lifespan of the plates by also maintaining it's ability to maximize the efficacy of sharpening. For those that havent cleaned their plates in a long while, use gentle dishsoap and a dollar toothbrush to brush along the plates to get all the metal shavings out of the diamond ridges. There is also an arrowhead holder behind the plates too, so you can lift the plates, put the arrowheads inside the slot, and then carefully sharpen. I need to get more compound to put on the strop but this is a nice video. thank you much!

    Tip. The diamond surfaces, being magnetic, can be flipped over, thus protecting from dirt, etc. when transporting on camping/hunting trips, etc. I also find it's easier to hold the knife firmly by the handle and run the worksharp along the blade, rather than try to hold the worksharp by the end and run the blade along the abrasive surface. There just isn't enough to hold onto on the worksharp to keep it steady, and there are no tables out in the field to set it on anyway.

    I bought 2 of these based on reviews, one in the kitchen, one in the shop. Thanks for the very helpful "how to" video. And wow, I've never been very good at sharpening. I was able to get my orange buck 284 shaving sharp following your instructions. Now, with patience, I have lots of knives to sharpen. I'm hard on edges, so 20° is just fine.

    Still wish they'd just offer this Field Sharpener with a 17° angle guide as well. One for the field with 20°, one for the kitchen with 17°. Would be all that most people need.

    Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night th-cam.com/users/postUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

      I’ve had one for years. It’s hard to get the hang of it. don’t use the angle prop on that side because it’s not the same angle as the other. Just eye ball it. Don’t go to hard on the ceramic, go on one side and once on the other side a good 4-6 times lightly and you will get it hair razor sharp. Don’t use the leather strop or you will get rid of your edge:

    • @SAL_Destroyer
      @SAL_Destroyer 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Step 1: using the lighter grit sharpen one side of you’re blade counting the passes you make until you feel a burr/ lip form on the blade then repeat the same amount of passes on the other side.
      Step 2: on the same grit alternat passing/sharpening it to once on one side then the other. Untill it passes the (finger nail test).
      Step 3: Turn your sharpener to the porcelain side (do not use degree angle on this side, just feel out the angle) and LIGHTLY and GENTLY!sharpen your blade alternating on one side and the other until you can shave hairs of your arms or legs.
      Step 3: Do not use strop, it will dull out your hair shaving razor sharp blade.

    Can you use this on large kitchen knives?

      Yes, absolutely. They make a bigger tabletop unit which would be better, but this still can work.

      Amazon is probably the best place. Also, local jewlery stores will probably give you some if you ask.

      I recommend a system like the Spyderco Sharpmaker for something like that to be honest. BUT, you might be able!

    Very good video Matt! I have a Lansky kit but the one bad thing about it is that it isn't descriptive on what angles are at each hole nor what angles I should be using. Thanks!

      I've used the lansky for a long time and It is decent, but I get way better results with this!

    So if you’re using it on a blade for the second time instead of step 1 where do we start? Step 2? Just the strop?

    I can promise you that I will be unable to sharpen my knifes on this device. I fought the battle for years of trying to “hold the same angle,” to no avail. Just because somebody in a video can do it is irrelevant. There are plenty of videos of people getting shaving quality edges with plain flat stones- doesn’t matter with me. My problems went away when I spent $25 on a Lansky set.

      This is what I’m struggling with currently. I may have to give the Lansky a try.

    • @mencken8
      @mencken8 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@Centurion323 There are a number of brands out there now that do the same, i.e., control the edge angle of the blade. When I got my Lansky set, it was pretty much the only one out there- so shop around. I have the regular stones, and the set is priced pretty reasonably. Lansky also makes diamond stones now, but of course they’re pricier.

      The problem we have is that you have to click on the video before you can comment on it, which is all they're after really.
