Generally though, I think cats pick up on the tone of voice rather than the actual words. They can tell if their human is angry or happy with them, and try to respond in kind with similar sounding meows.
They understand their name, food association sounds and names, playful sounds and words, grooming and sleeping sounds. "hey, girl, brush time" "let's go to sleepy time my girl" "Time for dinner my girl!" she knows those words associated with her needs
