Look, man: I don`t think artist as you say (I may also say "literature writers", authors, right?) can't share their thoughts and opinions on social or political topics through their work. Of course they can and, in fact, they do it all the time: it's almost imposible that somebody writes a poem, a novel, a story or an essay (i may say as well a film, by the way) that doesn't contain any social, political or cultural reflexion, view or critique. However, I think that if you are (or aspire to be) a serious writer (that is to say a writer that makes literature) you just can't sustain your career nor your work on political or social views or critiques, because your main concern should be literature, language, art, right? Otherwise you become a (social/political) "comitted writer", or the voice of a political lobby or party, and that has little or nothing to do with art.
And listen, man, I am not saying that a "literature writer" should be a purist that only writes just for the sake of writing, literature for the sake of literature, no. I am just saying there are other things to write about, right? Beauty, Love, Lonliness, Tradition, Exile, etc. Do you get what I mean? You like films, don't you? I'm curious to know what are your most admired filmmakers.

Before you learn how to write for social change, learn how to write. Focus on delivering emotions through form, before focusing on the message.
If you skip the basics, only those who agree with you will get the message.
