    If you watched this video and thought, "Hey, maybe I would like to be a management consultant but I didn't get a business degree from a prestigious school", I have some great news for you. Those degrees are wonderful but I have been in consulting for quite some time now and consultants come from all sorts of backgrounds! One of the consultants on the team that I manage has a degree in biology from Kansas State. I have worked with people with degrees in psychology, horticulture, history - just about anything from any school. The consulting firms do have dedicated recruiters for certain schools and certain degrees but that does not stop YOU from reaching out to the company and applying! It doesn't matter if you went to an Ivy League and got a business degree or if you went to college online (maybe not University of Phoenix or Kaplan - those are just diploma mills but so long as it was a "real" school), if you want to be a consultant, just make sure that you sell yourself on your resume! (The MD on my project dropped out of community college after one year and never even finished a degree!) The bottom line is that anybody with the desire can do this. It doesn't take a special degree. If you want to be a consultant, you surely can.

    As a 22 year old, who's about to enter a B-school ( aimlessly ) who has little to no knowledge on consulting, I must say that this video is very informative yet very much easy to understand . I like how you avoided technical terms and simplified the stuff so common folk would understand. hello Taylor, very bold attitude to talk about management consultancy on youtube without saying for which company are you working, anyway it does not matter, in the end, all these companies have the same approach and mentality. as for me, having more than 5 years of experience in strategy&management consultancy, I enjoyed a lot learning but not only about methods/way of working but also about human relations, interpersonal relations building, sincerity, transparency, and so on. my little advice to you would be: do not be so idealistic about what you are doing, never give up your life principles and sincerity. greetings from Paris :)

    It's very interesting you get into a top tier strategy consulting firm without any consulting internships. I guess that's what Wharton does to a CV, but mindblowing nevertheless. In Germany, you'd need at least an internship at a similar firm to even get into the pool of candidates, they want their consultants to have experience before sending their CV to customers and request large sums for their hours.

    Like some other people I also got into consulting by accident... did two years with an implementation heavy company and now moving to more strategy/process improvement starting next month. I will say that you don't typically move around too much at least in implementation. They see what you're good at and then you're stuck with a client that keeps renewing you and won't let you go! Hope strategy doesn't do that to you! The traveling bit was the best part for me esp in my early 20s... but now I don't see things being like they used to be. No way a client is going to pay for travel when pandemic WFH worked out just fine. Most I see is once a month maybe twice.

    The only consulting that matters is McKinsey, BCG, and Bain. Tier 2 firms like Oliver Wyman and AT Kearney get smaller-scale projects and are less prestigious. Then you have the Big 4 firms, which often get the less sexier projects like due diligence. Speaking as a Big 4 Strategy consultant. If any of you are interested in consulting, I highly advise you to aim for the top firms from the get-go.

      @@TaylorBell what would you say you do here?

  • @aschmitt89
    @aschmitt89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Management consulting does for business management what it consultants does for business IT. And we learn about the business workings. Interestingly enough, these both overlap, but IT consultants typically don’t stick to one single company. We assist multiple companies.

    • @TaylorBell
      @TaylorBell  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makes sense! Interesting to hear the similarities and differences

    • @aschmitt89
      @aschmitt89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TaylorBell I’d say we’re similar in that we only need to understand the business process in order to take known technology available, and figure out where/how it could make a business’s job easier, or more streamlined. A lot of the bigger IT Consultants I know of have Business Consultants on board for just this purpose, or are themselves Business Consultants. Unfortunately, if you can’t adequately assess the business’s requirements, then you risk either missing the mark, or worse, getting the business set up with a solution that simply does not work for them. There’s nothing I dislike more than a sales person that shoves something at a business, promising them the world, and underdelivering. Unfortunately, My own business has been a victim of this, so I’ve implemented a vendor vetting process to get all vendors I use internally, and I’m expanding this to all vendors I partner with to provide services to my clients.

    Also, very looking forward to the videos about the preparation for the consulting. How the idea came up to your mind to join there? How did you prepare for various stages of the interview (If you joined McKinsey, the video about new digital assessment can be very useful, in TH-cam there is literally no good video about that).
