For 10 dollars a month you can get unlimited GB a month. Canada's telecom market is highly unregulated. What's the point of the CRTC? Serves the big 3 interests. Canadian Rip off and Telecom Cooperative.
You can’t really blame the kids. They don’t know how much the original bills cost. They don’t know how much the overcharge is. They can’t conceptualize how much of a ripoff it is and how high those overages are. It’s on the parents for not teaching a child not to spend money that isn’t there’s. AND it’s on the provider for being so predatory and KNOWING that kids are going to do this.
What's really weird about this is that when texting first got started, people used it over phoning because customers were charged on the basis if time used. Talking on the phone took longer than texting. For example, a phone conversation might take 3 minutes but texting the same conversation would take only a fraction of a second to say what would take 15 seconds to say on the phone. So telecoms recognized this, realized that they would make less money with texters, and started to charge for "data usage" rather than time even though it cost them less for data transfers than time usage.
+1140Cecile There are multiple scams going on with these pricks. Years ago; per second billing was changed back to per minute billing because those unused seconds amounted to a LOT of money. Now they do what they "legally" can - no matter how immoral and unethical - to make as much as they can.
In India - you get 2GB/Day for 91 days for approx $7 (High speed 4G) - After it's over, you get unlimited 2G access (which is useless but can work in emergencies.)
i have 1 GB and pay the same. i rarely ever go over it though. i'd benefit so much from "roll over data" there are some months where i don't use any data, and others where i'm ordering 1G too.

While this is old video. Cellphone company over charge for data, consider mobile data is just data from internet. But isp put such low data caps at HIGH price. These companies are OVERCHARGING for same data. Does not matter if mobile or from home data. Still all comes from same source. It makes zero sense why can charge so much more for 1 GB mobile data vs internet data.
canadian telecommunications company have been know to be shady. i remember how even when i wasn't an account holder i could get upgrades on my account but if i wanted to downgrade i have to be the account holder what kind of bs is that.
That’s why in the US if you go over the phone company slows you down to 2G speeds. Overcharges in the US are uncommon anymore. Many years ago US phone companies used to have overage charges but now it just get slowed down.
There is a difference between Mega-Bits (mb) and Mega-bytes (MB). Not knowing the difference can cost a lot of money. In addition, WHY; Would a parent allow their kid to have an open account 24/7/365 at a candy store; There kids!
The US has much better data plans. None of the 4 major providers, (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile) will charge you for overages anymore unless you're on an old plan.
charlesplane lol they may have unlimited data but lool how brain dead kids are in the states there dramatically below average when it come to academic lol look at the sat it poor
Not true, in Taiwan they have unlimited data yet they have high academic rates. SAT alone does not determine intellegence. Most millionaires don't even go to school.
Please research American testing before you make such comments. America tests EVERYONE in a nation of 300 million whereas other countries test a much smaller portion of their population. Ask yourself how China has such a low literacy rate yet they test higher than Canadians in Maths and Science? It's because they only test a select few high achievers. In the US, extremely underfunded public schools, where some kids have not eaten over the weekend, are lumped in with well funded elite schools. Also ask yourself why most of the top ranking schools in the world are in the US and are mostly filled with American students? Testing data is highly skewed.
I'm sorry but Rosemary's story is just a parenting fail. Bell doesn't know which phone belongs to a kid or parent. They did their part by notifying and asking for permission on the phone in question. It's a matter of talking to her son about the overages.
Its time to tell her son's about legal rights as a consumer and know it. Making people pay through the nose should be unethical and that just gives the big 3 more price hiking. Enough is enough. The regulator is worthless, time to take a stand and say NO to gouging. Robelus is afraid about the future.
I get email otifications anytime I do anything to my accounts. And they couldn't at least inform the bill payer by email or phone call that they have raised the dat ceiling? Sneaky business practice. Probably fully disclosed in the fine print though.
i remember there WAS a way to create a "kids" account for your phone line, but back before smartphones. it prevented extra lines from being able to make charges on the account (this was when mobile phone internet was, pay per page and only used for buying ringtones) ALL THEY NEED TO DO, is NOT text the non primary account holder. ALL they need to do is have their clients select which line they want the texts to go to. it's not that complicated. it's not new technology...
The phone co. should have an idea whose phone it is. The fact that they don't care as long as the bill is paid is troublesome to say the least. We, thankfully, live in the US and have unlimited data; before this change both my husband would get a notice when we were close to the maximum; my son would not get a message, so obviously, they can tell whose phone they are sending the message to.
How are kids supposed to get money? My parents (lots of my friend's parents too) don't get money for doing chores and there's no jobs for younger people
+AnimeBeefRandoms That was precisely my thoughts as well. My parents would definitely have made me work that off in addition to other punishments. Bet I'd never have done it again, though.
Mow lawns, rake leaves, shovel snow, etc. When your parents allow you to have a cell phone with limited data and you choose to go over that amount, you're responsible for what it costs.
So your kid uses their service and you don't want to pay a dime? What kind of message does that send to your kid? It's ok to use a service and not pay? $1700 is a cheap price to pay for an educational opportunity.
$1700 is the most expensive data package I have ever heard of. $50 a gigabyte!! In Taiwan data is so cheap its only $3.75 per gigabyte and that's on prepaid. Once it goes over it just shuts off. or go unlimited for $30 month per line. If you need unlimited data in a jiffy, 9 USD will get you unlimited data for 7 days.
For some plans, the data is as-you-go and user is charged $5 for every 100MB. That comes to $50 per 1GB. I use that plan because I almost never use data. In my opinion, the mother should make the child repay at least part of the $1700 - if not for making her learn a lesson in responsibility.
But still, $50 is still very expensive. I live in the USA where telecom rates are regulated. In most countries telecom rates are regulated by the communications agencies. eg FCC,NCC,OFCOM,ETA,ACMA etc. Some how the CRTC does not regulate these rates therefore the provider can charge what they like. Even Australia has better plans than Canada does and they have a sparse population. I heard in Canada, they still have anytime mins or local mins. What is this, 1995? Its time to change. Its called robellus for a reason. They are a cartel that is worse than AT&T or even Verizon. Robellus is afraid of the future. Just like T-mobile's CEO said, these telecom untlities have no place in the future of technology.
I’m 24, when I was about 13 I got my first flip phone. My parents ended up with a charge over $100. No one not even my parents had told me this could happen. Nowadays there should be no excuses.
+FiNiTe Good catch. I don't understand why parents would shrug this off and say "They're just teenagers, hurr durr." They're on the verge of being adults. How can anyone be expected to act responsibly if they're not taught how to do so?
FiNiTe Me, too. I don't FB or other apps like that, but I do use youtube (obv), Netflix, and Prime, and if I use 50G in a month, it freaks me out. I can only think the telcos don't really have accurate data meters - they seem to clock a lot more usage than is normal. Maybe that would be something for CBC to investigate. It could also be that these kids aren't force-closing apps when they put their phones down.
In the UK one of the most popular mobile carriers is called o2. My dad was on that network when my family and I took a trip up to the north of the country. On the journey we tethered three iPhones, an iPad and a macbook pro to his phone to do things like watch netflix over 4g. The next month he got a bill for over £800 (1523 canadian dollars, 1169 us dollars). When he phoned up to say how ridiculous it was they didn't make him pay a single penny. Thats what I call lucky to the extreme!
in my place, i have unlimited data with 10Mbps. Even you can download huge amount of data but you can still use it without notification. We pay the bill every month :V

MariMarianations Australia has unlimited plans for home wifi and mobile data. I have both. Then there’s no monitoring or sneaky excess charges and if I have guests staying they are all welcome to connect to my wifi
@@brid5970 In America when it comes to home internet we pay for speed note data usage. And while we do have cell phone plans the charge for data we also have lots that have unlimited data (and texts and calls. Well unlimited calls as long as it is within the US and you are not roaming) and they can be relatively cheap ($50 a month).
To everyone in the comments blaming the kids.... you're ignoring the key thing: they are price gauging. The price has risen SIGNIFICANTLY in the last few years. We pay more than almost any other country in the world for data. Doesn't that upset you?? Like I'm an autistic adult and I got screwed by data overages. I struggle with numbers, cause and effect, and all sorts of daily functioning tasks and whatnot. Hell I need a case worker who I see once a week to help me with a lot of stuff. Now my credit is so bad because of data overages that a) my previous account got shut down, and b) when my phone broke past warranty expiration, I couldn't get a new one. It's been MONTHS. I have autopay monthly payments on my credit card, and my tax returns gave me enough money to pay for my giant last cell phone bill (because it had been the first time I'd ever done my taxes.... I'm 24), so my credit should be ok after 6mo... but that's 6mo I'm gonna be without a phone - in a society that relies on everyone having a smartphone. And as an autistic person: you have no idea how much my phone helped make it easier to function in the world as an autistic. I struggle to do basic tasks like groceries now. (If you think I sound too competent for my claims: I am book smart but when it comes to daily functioning I struggle greatly. It's intellect vs. executive dysfunction, sensory processing, overloaded mind, etc. I used to be able to function fine... but since my burnouts? Yea. I can barely do anything for myself anymore.) As for how I ended up using up so much data: well I ended up homeless, then living at the YMCA. The internet here is TERRIBLE. But to set up new internet I'd have to pay $200 upfront, which living off of welfare I couldn't afford. Because despite being severely disabled, I was rejected for disability support TWICE. Third time I succeeded, and with the few months backpay I actually was able to set up some proper internet in my room. So when I DO get a new phone, I won't get a bunch of overages like last time. Because I mean from 19-23 living on my own I never had problems with overages. Because I had internet at home. (I was kicked out at 19 for being too "difficult".... my parents kinda suck.)
Wow, you are such a whiny child. Yeah, your parents do suck, they produced a junky bloodline. Seriously not being mean, but for the sake of humanity, don't breed.
Not really,No telecom regulator in the world would allow this. (Not even the FCC) Canada is the only country I know of that lets telecom companies do whatever they want.
lol thats worth about 50 months worth of unlimited data, calls and texts in Finland + 10 GB free EU data (if you go to another eu country you dont pay roaming)

How much TH-cam has your son watched that it costs 1700$ !?!??! Blame your son, not the corporations. Bell doesn't know that it's a minor approving overage charges. You signed up for it knowing the full extent of the contract. Perhaps you should focus on better parenting and not giving your irresponsible son access to a cell phone with data.
That's why kids should have prepaid cell phone plans. When their high speed data runs out, they're throttled until the bill is paid again. No overages!
Yes that is very expensive in Canada, I live in Belgium and pay 5€ a month for 500MB data and for me this is more than enough I use the wireless at home if possible.
*The term unlimited doesn't mean unlimited there's a max amount of Data you can use. Of course you don't pay your bills base on your attitude so why don't you get a job oh yay your American Haha.
I once had Rogers charge me $300 more for data overuseage. However, one call to Rogers and that charge was gone. The carrier is obligated by law to inform you when you are nearing the limit, at the limit and over the limit with your data. Because they haven't sent me the message (glitch maybe), the rep basically said, "we are obligated to let you know about these things, so I am removing the charge from your bill".
dont get your kids a phone..let them turn 18, get a job and get their own...this has nothing to do with celllphone companies..this is all idiotic parenting..
Shame to the Goverment of Canada allowing this to happen. The mobile networks operators are to blame in this case. That's like saying a doctor in Canada racked up $24000 in roaming data fees when he lost his iphone in the USA and someone bypassed the accept charges and racked up the fees. Even the FCC in the USA is more effective than the CRTC. Almost every telecom regulator in the world would not allow running up mobile charges without verification of account. The telecom regulator is pretty much worth less since they are run by Robellus. Time for the people in Canada to step up and say enough!! Even Australia is cheaper despite sparce population and they are an island. Why,because most the the prices and fees are regulated by the ACMA.

Yeahh I am still not sure what my plans counts as roaming. I Have an unlimited plan (calls at least within the US, texts and data Well I think after a new service provider took over it is no unlimited any moe but is new 100GB. But by US law they shouldn't be able to change that and it was unclear when they sent the notice and when I talked o them) but I am not sure if that still means roaming applies or not and if so does that mean if I go outside the US or if I just go outside my state.
Yep, being careful is half the battle. Just like at the restaurant, you can't just keep ordering things and not worry about the cost. I think it's fair, the operators did stop the data and ask if the consumers wanted to pay for more.
Pressing "Accept" to the charges is actually entering into a contract. Minors are not legally able to enter into a contract precisely because the law considers they are not mature enough to fully understand or even care about the consequences. Since the phone companies illegally entered into a contract with a minor, the parents are not bound to pay the charges - any court of law would rule in the parents' favor.

Lol, only two words... Spoiled kids. Those kids are clearly spoon fed, never had to work an hour for the data privilege... I hardly top up my phone with $10-20 per month and that's it, no more. I'm a med student who works to pay for his degree and living, never when I lived with my parents misused my phone's data because I valued how hard they had to work for the money....
johnva7 I'm proud of you man, hope there are others that think with the same mindset as you.
For 10 dollars a month you can get unlimited GB a month. Canada's telecom market is highly unregulated. What's the point of the CRTC? Serves the big 3 interests. Canadian Rip off and Telecom Cooperative.
It’s literally for the video bro, your literally just a old dude
You can’t really blame the kids. They don’t know how much the original bills cost. They don’t know how much the overcharge is. They can’t conceptualize how much of a ripoff it is and how high those overages are.
It’s on the parents for not teaching a child not to spend money that isn’t there’s. AND it’s on the provider for being so predatory and KNOWING that kids are going to do this.
Im watching this at home on my phone and i checked like seven times to make sure í wasnt using data.
We should have a gov run cell phone company to get these horrid prices down
In India - you get 2GB/Day for 91 days for approx $7 (High speed 4G) - After it's over, you get unlimited 2G access (which is useless but can work in emergencies.)
Solution for the parents have the teens pay their own bill and that eleminates the problem from over fees.
I pay 60 bucks a month with metroPCS unlimited plan and use average 30GB a month no issues at all. I've met a couple people that use about 50GB.
Isaac I have Boost and I pay $45 and I use 38-40 gigs monthly.
i have 1 GB and pay the same. i rarely ever go over it though. i'd benefit so much from "roll over data" there are some months where i don't use any data, and others where i'm ordering 1G too.

U pay way too much u can get unlimited for 10eur in eu
@@verynice.mp4613 Is it truly unlimited or like, High speeds upto a certain amount and then slowed down internet
kids these days smh
While this is old video. Cellphone company over charge for data, consider mobile data is just data from internet. But isp put such low data caps at HIGH price. These companies are OVERCHARGING for same data. Does not matter if mobile or from home data. Still all comes from same source. It makes zero sense why can charge so much more for 1 GB mobile data vs internet data.
canadian telecommunications company have been know to be shady. i remember how even when i wasn't an account holder i could get upgrades on my account but if i wanted to downgrade i have to be the account holder what kind of bs is that.
Canada needs Project Fi.
+Brew311 Agreed
Google Fi'ed
This is why I use wifi.
They 'are' using wifi.. lol..
2 years late but wifi is king a McDonalds
Wow, the comment on that girl saying I will still be in the house, I would tell her to stay on the family plan is to get a part time job.
Damn $60 and it's unlimited never throttled 4g lte data on metro pcs
That’s why in the US if you go over the phone company slows you down to 2G speeds. Overcharges in the US are uncommon anymore. Many years ago US phone companies used to have overage charges but now it just get slowed down.
and not one android phone was seen that day
And That is the real problem. Iphones are often locked into companies or plans that don't have an unlimited option.
Android trash
so do customers not have ANY personal responsibility?
There is a difference between Mega-Bits (mb) and Mega-bytes (MB). Not knowing the difference can cost a lot of money. In addition, WHY; Would a parent allow their kid to have an open account 24/7/365 at a candy store; There kids!
William Guy Thilgen Jr. Their* You probably are a kid yourself.
In Turkey you get a pop up on your screen saying that you have exceed your limit but it does not block it so it’s too late.
Y’all have free healthcare, we have free data
Where do you live?
Canada should go with Unlimited Data plans because Unlimited Data plans are way cheaper than Limited Data Plans
Go with Eastlink and don't give your kids a god damn cell phone
+TheLouisXXI Brilliant. Did you come from the "old school" way of thinking recently; or have you always lived with a fascist point of view?
David Eirescott and your kids are not your friend and if they want to stop something like this from happening
go na

go na Yes, but they are not the best service
Canadian Cell Phone Carriers need to have Unlimited Data because it’d be way cheaper than a Limited Data Plan
Why is this lady complaining about?! Just keep an eye on your kids. It's all her son's fault!
Hold on, they said that her son wasn't completely sure what was going on.
Hans Blix of cell phones... "we will give them a talking to"
The US has much better data plans.
None of the 4 major providers, (Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile) will charge you for overages anymore unless you're on an old plan.
Merica!! lol
charlesplane lol they may have unlimited data but lool how brain dead kids are in the states there dramatically below average when it come to academic lol look at the sat it poor
These companies need to spend some money on parenting to prevent parents from suing them
I'm sorry but Rosemary's story is just a parenting fail.
Jessica Cottingham you should be able to designate ranking within the devices on the plan
i remember there WAS a way to create a "kids" account for your phone line, but back before smartphones. it prevented extra lines from being able to make charges on the account (this was when mobile phone internet was, pay per page and only used for buying ringtones)
ALL THEY NEED TO DO, is NOT text the non primary account holder.
36 gigs in one month...damn!
Sounds like bad parenting to me. Make the kid pay for his own bill.
How are kids supposed to get money? My parents (lots of my friend's parents too) don't get money for doing chores and there's no jobs for younger people
L E V I ・ェ・ So? You're not entitled to anything in life, you have to earn it.
+L E V I ・ェ・ Sell stuff like candy, chips, drugs, juice, soda, or other stuff.
I used to work in a call centre for T-Mobile and only the account holder and one authorized user could make any billing changes.
this is the most minuscule of problems why is there even an episode on this? just talk to your kids
Some parents are technologically inept and probably have no idea this is even a thing.
So the CCTS is nothing.
What justification they have to exist? (I know it's a video from 2016, still asking- and is this the situation these days?).
Welcome to Canada
3:16 is that 5 Terabytes of downloaded data?
+FiNiTe Good catch.
I don't understand why parents would shrug this off and say "They're just teenagers, hurr durr." They're on the verge of being adults. How can anyone be expected to act responsibly if they're not taught how to do so?
pbshelleygirl I was just wondering how you use that much..
Thats what I call lucky to the extreme!
is it ironic that im watching this on my phone? granted i have unlimited data and am connected to wifi but...
in my place, i have unlimited data with 10Mbps. Even you can download huge amount of data but you can still use it without notification. We pay the bill every month :V
if iam in campus, i will use their Free WiFi :3
We still use Data Plan not unlimited when we go out of our home but we always ask if there is WiFi XD
This probably still happens even now in 2018.
What's an overage fee lol I have unlimited data and it the best thing you can imagine don't receiving texts from your cell company telling you have gone over your data limit
In Canada, most providers don't have unlimited plans for data so that is an amount gigabyte and when you go over that amount you get charged.
That's a thing in Spain for data in cellphones. It isn't a thing for normal home internet/wifi though.
Well unlimited calls as long as it is within the US and you are not roaming) and they can be relatively cheap ($50 a month).
in australia, post paid excess data charges are between $10 per gb and $30 per gb. and their is a fair use clause
I love unlimited data
oh please, they're receiving consent from minors (read: non adults) who can not legally consent to anything?
just sue them
Data on cellphones should be FREE!
Time for her son to get his own phone and pay for it himself. Something tells me this will stop very soon.
Holy geez 36 Gigs of RAW 3G! I've never used my 3G more than 2.5 Gigs per month LOL. XD
He should get off his phone and get a life.
Lol I use 200 Gb of LTE every month.
Dhrumil Shah (Personal)
I use 1.8 lol.
Yea. I can barely do anything for myself anymore.)
As for how I ended up using up so much data: well I ended up homeless, then living at the YMCA.
THEIR POLICIES ARE JUST FINE, RAISE YOUR KIDS RIGHT!
Not really,No telecom regulator in the world would allow this. (Not even the FCC) Canada is the only country I know of that lets telecom companies do whatever they want.
bootlicker alert
milkerfish Yup. Sounds like a Fine!
a minor can not agree to a contract by law, how are these companies not shut down?
lol thats worth about 50 months worth of unlimited data, calls and texts in Finland + 10 GB free EU data (if you go to another eu country you dont pay roaming)
I pay $50 and get unlimited data (or at least I did I think it is now 100GB), texts, and calls (within the US and as long as I am not roaming. Though I am not sure what they count as roaming)
I'm with Rogers. My dad didn't get a text from when I went over. I did
How much TH-cam has your son watched that it costs 1700$ !?!??! Blame your son, not the corporations. Bell doesn't know that it's a minor approving overage charges. You signed up for it knowing the full extent of the contract. Perhaps you should focus on better parenting and not giving your irresponsible son access to a cell phone with data.
maybe it is youporn, not youtube.
they literally answered that in the video, it is about 18 movies worth...18 movies in a month for a teenager is nothing
Canadian Bearded Hillbilly there are definitely companies in Canada that offer an option to disable your data when you use all of it
At 12:01
36567.4673 MB costs $1747.57
That's around $50/GB (about $48.94)
They are TARGETING kids and teenagers because they MAKE BAD DECISIONS. The corporations know this. They are TAKING ADVANTAGE of teenagers and kids,
How to does someone rack up that much data overcharge, I have a hard enough time using 5gb let alone the 10gb I have in total per month
In my country we pay around 15$ dollar for 300gb LTE data
Ral T_Y DUDE!!! How?
Ral T_Y What!?
That's why kids should have prepaid cell phone plans. When their high speed data runs out, they're throttled until the bill is paid again. No overages!
30€/month, unlimited data, texts and calls.
I love Finland
+TosiKivaIhminen I love Canada
Osiris 12 We don't want any of you guys, stay with trump.
£14.99 a month, unlimited data, calls, text and free international roaming. I love Three UK
Yes that is very expensive in Canada, I live in Belgium and pay 5€ a month for 500MB data and for me this is more than enough I use the wireless at home if possible.
Haha I live in the United States so I get unlimited data lol. 😝😉😆💥
*The term unlimited doesn't mean unlimited there's a max amount of Data you can use. Of course you don't pay your bills base on your attitude so why don't you get a job oh yay your American Haha.
Actually T-Mobile doesn't sell the plan anymore but American law forces them to keep giving me my plan until I switch lol
+Roen Wainscoat same as Canada we can use are plans until we switch.
MagniGames yeah WOW thats sad
Roen yeah lol I got unlimited to
I once had Rogers charge me $300 more for data overuseage.
I agree with the lady that Canada needs more Telecom companies so that there will be a competition for better price and better service.
dont get your kids a phone..let them turn 18, get a job and get their own...this has nothing to do with celllphone companies..this is all idiotic parenting..
This happened to me back in 2010. Since then I stopped using postpaid and started using only prepaid credit. Never ever paying that ridiculous bill.
same happened to me 2016
@@noumansaroya2898 just this past Friday my cellphone provider cold-called me offering to "upgrade" me to postpaid. I asked how many GB I'd be getting and they said TWO GIGABYTES PER MONTH. I currently pay 40 bucks for Unlimited Data + Unlimited Calls on prepaid. Postpaid is just a way to trap their customers.
*_Finally CBC figured out how to get a positive like ratio, $_*
This happened to me 10 years ago from roaming charges.... I got my first phone drove through the usa and got 1300$ in roaming charges
There should be a class action lawsuit over this.
*meanwhile I'm 23 paying 2 EUR per 1gb data and 4 cents for SMS or minute of call, usually end up paying 4 EUR a month, when I was in age of those teens I was paying my mom money to be able to have WiFi, and had credit charged from parents by like 2 EUR a month for phone calls*
