Permaculture Design in Practice - increasing water catchment with swale design

  • Winter has hit with cold, wet and windy weather. After a dry summer it's good to see my permaculture design in action with my swale finally filling up enough to feed water into my dam. In today's video I took through my water flows on the property, in particular the functions of my three swales. I'm not the only one enjoying the water that has fallen with some of my feathered friends loving it all!!

    The ducks are just loving it, finding things worth ducking for, not to mention the frogs.

      Yes - it has been very dry until the start of June. I think we’re all excited about the rain - ducks included 😄

    Great to see, must have been a big undertaking. In my area West coast central Florida we are still waiting for the rain.

      I was very nervous when the earthworks guys came in that I had given enough info on what I wanted but so excited and happy when it all turned out as it did! Good luck with the rains 🤞

    Such a lovely sight; would love to have some of that rainwater here in west central Alabama USA.

      Hi Sue we had no rain for 5 months and it’s just turned on this month! Hopefully you’ll get some soon 🤞

    Did you design your swales and water capture yourself? It looks and is working great. Did you get the chance to do the betonite? Love those happy sounds 🦆🐸

      I did design it - for my PDC and got a tick of approval from Geoff lawtons teachers assistants 👍👍 . Didn’t do bentonite- the dam is just reaching the point when it leaks (1m from full) - if this rain stops I might still have time, or there’s always next year! 😕

    would it help retain more water if your water route are more zigzag?

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A swale is a ditch on contour with a berm on which you grow trees which help sink the water into the subsurface. I haven’t heard of zigzagging swales- might make it difficult to manage the tree growing bit!
      Thanks for watching & for you comment 😊

    Its so obviously the right thing to do. Now why cant our crappy governments around the world do this on larger scale

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We the people need to do this ourselves. Governments are bought by big corporations and if there are no profits in it, it won't happen!!

      I don't want to live in a country where gov has that level of control but I do have 700 meters of these in my organic orange grove. Before giving up my rights, I would like to know if you are a complainer or a responsible individual. how many meters or yards of these do you have today?

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not sure about the person making the original comment but I have 240m of swales. 700m is fantastic! I think people on the land should be responsible and at least try to slow the water and sink it if possible. It all adds up and hopefully will improve the local water cycle!
      Thanks for watching John!
