    Thanks for passing by and hope you've enjoyed watching this project unfold! It's such a pleasure to share this here with you. We've been dreaming of starting a food forest for so long and I can't believe we've finally planted the beginning of hopefully something incredibly abundant. Will definitely do update videos on how the food forest will grow overtime!! Want to start growing your own food? In my free guide I go over 6 steps to help you go from beginner gardener to year-round abundance. Download here: www.rootsreconnected.com/

      @petervermeer.4904 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@kohtime ..My guess is that the guy (with the machine) is hired. You can let them come for an afternoon, for a swimming pool as an example.
      Or for a few full days, in this case.
      You can also in this area hire people, local farmers, for a day with big tractors if needed. So you don't have to buy all the big machines yourself.

    Hey we did something very similar about nine years ago in Galicia (just North of Portugal), we also have dry summers but still get more rainfall than Portugal. Still, we found that in these mediterranean climates, we had much better success planting trees directly in the swales, much less watering to establish them this way. We never had waterlogging problems with the trees, especially on a slope. When you add organic material swales get very absorbent and suck the water down really well, unless there is really hard clay. Anyway we have some really nice drone shots of what this type of project looks like when it is mature on our channel if anyone wants to see!

    You need to make a pool around the young trees, to water them, so the water can penetrate the soil where the roots are.... This dirt is gonna become like rock in a few weeks when it settle and the sun totally dries it out. I have similar soil in my area, it drains well but the water will spread on the surface and not go under where roots develop, if there isnt a pool. These trees will not resist the summer if the water dont penetrate... Another thing... Dont forget to soften (beat up with a tool) the soil around the trees, every 30 days, to kill the weeds and so the water can actually be stored under the surface and go where it needs.. you need to do that the first couple of years. Here in turkey, where there's not enough water, they plant fig trees and olive trees, but until they can build enough foliage to shade its roots... you will need to water them.

    • @pascaltwigg6096
      @pascaltwigg6096 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And once you water them, make sure you spread some dry dirt on top, so the top layer is dry.. otherwise it will crack and the moisture will escape from the cracks..
      It would have been easier if you had a dripping system, but even then, you would still need to plow the dirt around the tree to allow the water to go deeper.

    • @pascaltwigg6096
      @pascaltwigg6096 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      And also, buy bare-rooted trees next time, those potted trees are no good, they basically spend a whole year to untangle and the legend says that they dont have a long life because of the way the roots develop in a round formation, and less likely to survive storms as they grow older. +bare rooted trees are cheaper.

      @@georgeackerman1752 the triangle is an old fashioned level. The rock on a string shows level when it hits the center mark of the triangle. Been used for many thousands of years! Swales need to be level in order to stop and store water as opposed to moving it.

    So enjoying watching your exciting new venture. So brave. There’s so much I don’t understand about permaculture - what is the purpose of the straw and how come the water doesn’t drain away from the deep gully?

    Looks great. I love the huge rounded rocks. I have been doing a little landscaping myself and I have always used a big excavator for everything. I never quite understood what the baby excavators are for as they seem so inefficient&expensive compared to the big ones ? (I pay 120 CAD/h for the big 25 ton or so excavator. It has a big 3' bucket but you can pick up toothpicks with it). Ok, gotta go and watch some of your other videos :-)

    Please tell me you watered in those trees you planted. I didn't see you wet the hole nor give them a long long drink.

    I have been following you since the beginning! I am so glad to see you guys with land of your own! Can not wait to see what you do! I am fearful for so many baby trees all at once. Even here where i live where it rains "normal" baby trees often need irrigation to get a root hold, and not die the first year. I am picturing you guys with a bucket scooping your pond dry, trying to keep all those trees alive. Can you set up drip emitters. I am, certain you have thought of all of this, I am asking because I can't see how you'll do it, and i am curious.

    Why did you decide to plant on top of the swale mound? I've read a lot of conflicting advice some say to plant on the downhill side of the mound where the mound meets the natural slope, but in nearly every video I've seen people plant on top of the mound.

    Any reason for that?
