40 Years of sludge is what that look like to me. I look forward to seeing this machine back to its former glory thank you for sharing. Best regards, Bob from Virginia USA
You gotta name her Fiona the Fortress forklift or something like that! Can already tell you are gonna be using this a ton up on your property! The lift has so much maneuverability it will preform great in the tight spots!👍 Merry Christmas Alan.
My Daddy was a heavy duty diesel mechanic and when he worked on the hydraulics system he would drain the hydraulic fluid and clean the tank out with Zep parts cleaner. Great job getting that old forklift running Alan, aka Wizard! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 ⛄️🎅🏼 God bless you and keep you safe ❤️🙏
The ZEP Parts Cleaner can be a bit rough on seals and hoses you don't intend to replace so I'm inclined to go a bit more Old Timey and use Kerosene or Stove/Range Oil just like we use to do back in the day to thin out Transmission Fluid and Gear Lube for the winter season and to flush things all out in the spring. I'm hoping Alan did a much better job than the previous custodian of that unit in sealing the cover on that tank to prevent water getting back in there and turning all that tonnage of hydraulic oil (I know hyperbole) back into soap. Best!
I’m going to admit to be doubtful you could get that operational again. Impressive. My first thought after seeing the lift was how much that would have helped with all those cinder blocks.
Merry Christmas Wizard! Amazing that hydraulic system worked at all. Hopefully the strainer kept most of the sludge (?) out of the lines. The most failures we had while in Vietnam was the slider on the forks. It shouldn't be moved with a heavy load on the forks. They had to threaten some operators with court martial if they kept breaking them! Sure, brings back memories watching you wheeling it around
Alan, I could watch you work all day. You are very thorough and keep at it until you have checked everything. I’m impressed. I wish you a very Merry Christmas and I hope your new year will be full of blessings and happiness. God bless you and your family. ❤️🙏🙏👍👍🌟🌟❤️
Awesome vid. I am sooooooo glad I watched this, that is a very nifty use for the cable stop ends instead of melting a led ball at the end of the cable so I learned something new. I am AMAZED the hydraulics on that forklift worked at all with that super thick sludge in the reservoir.
Another youtuber I follow, would call that gunk in the oil tank, "dinosaur spaf". An apt term for the detritus of a badly maintained vehicle. I imagine it would be very rare to find one that was maintained correctly. Anyway, Alan the Wizard, I hope your new year is more successful than the tribulations you've had this year and look forward to the next one.
Hi Alan, the emergency shut down is real important on those old Detroits. As you may know, if an injector gets stuck, it can cause the fuel rail to stick at wide open throttle and the emergency shut down can save you, if that happens. Glad you got it working. I wonder if someone put diesel or engine oil in the hydraulic tank at one time. That was really nasty stuff. Merry Christmas! Thanks for the video!
Yes and the V's will start running in reverse in a poor shut down that causes them to have no oil pressure because the oil pump doesn't run backwards. Sometimes if no fuel they will run off engine oil. That's where the emergency shutdown is important
@@kentstryker7208 yes to a point. Any of the Detroit 2 cycle engines will do that. Even the 3-51. Selling points for Detroit. 1# with minor modifications they can run counter clock wise. 2# 2 cycle gets higher rpm faster then a 4 cycle. 3# Detroit would sell to anyone. Any number.
We put a shop vac on a 45-gallon drum, and use it to vacuum the sludge out of the tank; found it much easier and faster. Something to consider for the next time. From my family to all the MtnFortressLabs Team all the best in the new year. Play safe from Elliot Lake, Ontario. Canada.
Alan, your description of the thick gunk in the bottom of the hydraulic tank 'being/looking like grease' was spot on, after you got all of it out did you use some kind of degreaser or cleaning agent to clean the entire tank and its filtering screen before refilling it with fresh clean hydraulic fluid, did you do any further investigating to learn what the crud is/was and how it may got into the tank in the first place to prevent it from happening again, could it be the tank's vent, was it missing, damaged or inoperable? I truly respect and Thank You for all the detail you include in your videos now it will be interesting and fun to see you transporting it to the top of the mountain and how you will utilize its size and capabilities to further your journey of building your fortress home top the mountain. Be Well my friend.
For future references, it would be a good idea to change all the fluids before you even attempt to start it. Water in anything that is not supposed to havewater in it, can destroy mechanical or hydraulic components immediately. In fact any contaminats can cause destruction.
So Awesome to see You restore that cool old Forklift and give it a new life again. This was a great Christmas video to watch! Merry Christmas to You And I Pray that God will Bless You in the New Year to come! Keep Up the great work Alan an God Bless You.🙏🏻👍
Allen I just wanted to mention what I was seeing the gunk that you were digging out of the hydraulic tank that machine had been sitting for decades for that to take place I don't know how old that machine is but I'm pretty sure it's pretty old and I'm sure that hydraulic fluid had never been changed. I did an oil change years and years ago on a diesel farm tractor when I was a young boy and it never had an oil change but when I changed the oil there was Gunk that looked just like that I came splashing out of the oil pan when I pulled the plug so I would recommend going through all of the oil reservoirs including the engine to see how bad the oil is. And make sure it's got good new clean oil in it and then you can take it up to the mountain and use it there
Alan, your in a good position to be able to help out the shop with parts from your personal inventory of equipment and also it helps you. A nice yin and yang effect. Keep on rockin!
I have operated rough terrain fork lift up to 60 ft boom for several thousands of hours It is scary to see the hydraulic oil, it looks contaminated, the filters are surely really bad also I have never seen an oil reservoir that contaminated. Thank god you know what you are doing Merry Christmas Allan and have a nice Christmas Day
I love old I iron… I just don’t love working on it lol For your gauges , likely best to just re wire from scratch. As who knows who’s been in there chopping it up over the years . I’ve see that hydraulic goo before . Bloody sucks to clean out . Merry Christmas from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Merry Christmas Alan. I have a petibone forklift just like what you have it came from the army and i have had it for 35 years with only one problem in all that time, brakes are out! Its a beast it will go thru mud like crazy and lift way more than it says
Man, what a mess!....almost looks like there were two different fluids mixed that don't play well with each other. Glad you got her cleaned out and functioning tho.... Merry Christmas feller!!!
Mr Alan, that loader is going to run like new and I think it will do you well!! Merry Christmas and if you don't post before January then Happy New Year Sir!! God Bless you!!
Alan you are a very talented person who has faced struggles. Please protect yourself from the Heavy D established titles scam. You do not need this damaging your brand
Amen to that!! I have been binge watching your videos for several weeks and I love the content and your presentation style. Moreover, I love your passion for living. Keep them coming and Good Fortune for you in 2023.
Merry Christmas to you Allen Also. Best grease cleaner is. Dollar store brand Shampoo! I been wrenching fer 35 years. Icky sticky gooey grease and oil. Shampoo dissolves it. BUT then you must stay it with fluid film or wd40 otherwise it will flash rust right away
Alan I was amazed that the hydraulic system was working at all. I hope you'll get all of the contaminated stuff from the system. I am sure you can use that equipment for many things. Enjoyed watching you fix stuff.
You are the best Al. You are an inspiration for all that watch your channel. God Bless You! I didn't have a phone the time you posted, so I am just now seeing this. Hopefully you had a wonderful Holiday. Love sent to you from Colorado.
brilliant work again alan , just a thought for the future , for removing the waste oil in similar situations could have connected a vacuum cleaner to your bucket using the bucket lid with an inlet and outlet hose .
Put the ladder under the bucket to catch that fluid so you can do something else!!! Good job Wizard - "hands-on" to get all that gunk out!!! Poor machine it will be happy once it's been spring cleaned out!!! Again Wizard your a genius or a brilliant mastermind in getting that machine into working condition that your happy with cos we're happy for you... go rest now!!
I love just all the amazing knowledge and experience that you have! Your work ethic is so out of this world, no wonder you're called Wizard! Merry Christmas you and all the viewers!
wow that was some gunk in that tank great job cleaning it out it looks real good thanks for the videos this year you have a great Christmas and i am looking forward to next years videos and how you get on up the mountain see you next year
I really enjoy watching you work on your unique things and that forklift is an absolute beast! What ever happened top the red generator truck you were working on? Merry Christmas!
Happy new year. I wish you lots of fresh energy for the fortress build in the new year. I just finished my Blacksmithsop build by myself and it was nothing like what your doing there. a major mission ....lots of respect to you...I will be following your progress. stay safe..see you soon!!!

There was an issue earlier with failed upload, but I just checked the 360, 480, 720 and 1080p and both the video and sound works for me.

More likely than that it’s gear ⚙️ oil.
A vented system .
Dust and moisture breaking down the oil. Contamination ,heat, time.
