One of the craziest parts of this song is that it's *not* just the song playing in reverse and then forwards. It's actually two noticeably different mixes juxtaposed - evidenced by the fact that the shift from reverse to forward is not actually in the very middle of the track. One is slightly longer than the other. Furthermore, the version in this TH-cam upload is actually... *reversed* from what's on the album. Here, the longer mix plays in reverse, then flows into the shorter mix playing forwards. On the actual album release, it's the shorter mix that plays backwards into the longer mix which plays forwards. And if you listen closely you can hear all the differences. For one, the reason the longer mix *is* longer is the song cuts off into a surreal break near the end that flickers around like someone channel surfing (or like the misfiring neurons of a mind under electro-shock), and the longer mix also has the melody of Labyrinth playing below the final act of the song, which in my opinion elevates it quite a bit, and makes the shorter mix you hear in this version sound a little hollow in comparison. The amount of work that went into this song is absolutely staggering to behold.
Basically the backwards version in this video is the "distorted" version of the song while the one that plays forward is "undistorted". on Spotify it's the distorted version that plays forwards and vice versa
For those wondering why comments were off: The music video for Variations On A Cloud was extremely controversial, so comments were disabled there. I guess people started dissing VOAC in Miracle Musical’s other videos, so Joe turned off the comments channel-wide. The Variations on a Cloud video was recently pulled from TH-cam, so Joe probably thought it would be safe to enable the comments again.
Bro I was listening to this album on a road trip, and I had to stop at a gas station to use the bathroom. This bathroom was creepy ahh hell backrooms type stuff. This song came on and I thought I was gonna get possessed by the grim reaper on the toilet cause I didn't know it started backwards. All of this happened about 10 minutes ago 💀
HAHAHAHAHA IM SO SORRY I went to New Orleans and on the way there there was a dilapidated gas station bathroom that was torn up and dirty, and there was a broken shower in a dark corner of it. There was also a missing person poster, as well as a human trafficking awareness poster. Meanwhile, someone was hacking in another bathroom and I could hear it through the walls. I actually got a video of the bathroom because it was so creepy. I'm gonna probably upload it onto here, maybe with this song in the background lol
after so many years of loving this just now, very stoned, have i realized that that this song about electric shock therapy is using the flashing lights as a visual metaphor to simulate such an expirience to the viewer. Never have I seen a piece of art use my own nerves and neurons as a medium to send it's message bravo......
Just finished about half the video with my eyes closed. It's quite immersive, to the point of being sorta uncomfortable. It's almost like you're in Simon's shoes, and you're being electrocuted against your will. I also have a bit of a headache, it's unpleasant, but ups the immersion. Honestly would do that again (not rn, I don't want to have a seizure), I love being immersed in music, and I love feeling like I'm in the song (even if it's unpleasant). 7.9/10, somewhat painful and difficult to get through, but quite immersive.
The Spotify version is different, it is a completely different experience. It's almost like this is just a "for the vibes" version while the spotify version is this man actually going insane.
I thought I was tough for watching this in a dark room. I just watched it at 2am, no lights at all, my eyes unadjusted to the light, and now the words are burnt into my sight. 10/10, would watch again. My brain is shrieking in the hall of lull.
I like how everything flashes. Although its kinda super dangerous for people with epilepsy, it makes the music feel genuinely hard to listen to, which is kinda the point of getting your mind electrocuted
Man, this really says a lot about how the serfs work the ground, and how they give it all they’ve got, and how you give it all you’ve got til you’re down. This also says a lot about how the brain plays around, and how you fall inside a hole you couldn’t see, and also fall inside a hole inside a someone help me. It also says a lot about understanding what’s going on inside your mind, and how you can’t tell if you’re yourself.
I think you should also remark about the way it importantly shows how you should explain, to father his honor, that your brain claimed your glory over you.
There's lots of other parts that play forward in that part, notably some choir bits during the shifting interlude, and a lot of the instruments are actually playing forwards.

On the "see how to serfs work the ground" part, the reversed part uses white and light blue while the normal part uses black and dark red. Light blue becomes dark red when inversed. Black and white too of course. I realized this when i was about to ask the significance of the two colors. Also i just noticed that the colors of the reversed part is also inverted from the normal part so its not just the blue and red. Shouldve wrote that instead oops. I need to analyze the shit out of this album
Honestly hearing a lot of Joe's songs knowing what's going on inside his mind is heartbreaking. This one especially, but Labyrinth, All of my Friends (specifically the Electric demo), and Ruler of Everything just make me wanna cry. I wish he was doing better so much :(((
Man the first time I heard this song was like trying to solve a mystery. You try to piece together the lyrics that are reversed to get an idea of what happened. Then the unreversed lyrics come in and you try to relate it to the previous songs and you start to get an idea of what happened to the poor guy...
@@FishSticker Normally, the distorted half of the song (the reversed part here) is the part that's played forward. Here, the clean, not distorted part of the song is played forward, probably to make the lyrics make more sense. So this video is reversed compared to the original release.
You ever stumble upon a random Spotify song and then listen to the album and really like it but you're somewhat confused about how it pieces together as a musical so you google it and the Tally Hall wiki REALLY doesn't give you any proper info about what it all means so you go to the lyric video but the comments are all inside jokes and knowledge from like more than a decade's worth of following and you just .... Wonder why the hell you still wanna know what's going on, when the correct proceedings is obviously just to enjoy it in its natural state. Nobody? Nobody at all?
Basically the story is: sailor goes to hawaii where he meets a girl that he loves a lot, one day she dissapears so he searches for her and finds her dead, since all evidence is stacked against him, he claims insanity so he doesn't go to jail, so then they take him to a mental asylum where they use electroshock therapy on him and he actually goes insane, then he manages to escape the asylum and finds a boat so he can sail back to California, but since he's literally insane he doesn't know where he's going and ends up dying in the ocean, then he meets his love in the afterlife.
@@fixitfeilix5051 good point but i don't understand how prey would fit into the sentence and fit in with the actual theme / events of the song. maybe simon (the one in the electric chair) is prey for the chair?? that's... a every weird analogy but ehh do what you will with it
I can't really express how thankful I am that this song exists. I have an OCD diagnosis, with specific phobias that change over time. My current one is the most prevailing. Though I am medicated, I can still become triggered when I feel concern that I am at risk of my fear actualizing. This song perfectly encapsulates the experience of this disorder for me, and is something that I share with people to help them understand what it is like, despite this not being the actual subject of the song. The most impactful lyric for me is, "See how the serfs work the ground; and they give it all they've got, til' you're down. See how the brain plays around, and you fall inside a hole you couldn't see. Someone help me understand what's going on inside my mind." It's just so precious to me, and I wanted to share that, because listening to it almost makes the disease separate from me, like it's being pulled from my head, taken form as this monstrous thing, then killed in front of me. I can't linger on The Mind Electric for too long, as it's almost used as a way of treating my symptoms, and having it around when they aren't present can trigger intrusive thoughts as much as it does quell them when they're present. But I am thankful for it's ability to put into words something nothing else can.
I also have OCD, but mostly in the realm on contamination. This song also really resonates with me, too. For me it's line lines "See how the brain plays around, and you fall inside a hole you couldn't see. Someone help me understand what's going on inside my mind." & "Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me". I'm really glad to see somebody else who resonates with this song. :-] Also, I just wanted to say that I hope you're doing okay, & just to know that you aren't alone!!
@@JohnathanCactwo thank you so much for your reply. Mine is also about contamination and very clever, unfortunately. Sometimes it feels like it says “haha, cute” whenever I find something. But eventually this disease just starts slamming itself against the wall when we realize that No Matter What we are safe. “See how the serfs work the ground” the poor things are relentless. I oscillate between being cruel to the disease and kind, yelling at it and speaking gently to it. I am sending much love to you though friend and I have no question about that. I hope you are well as well.
@@star_bourn Thank you!! I get it, one moment I'm fine, & the next everything feels like its crashing down around me. It's nice to be able to connect with somebody else who also gets it.
@@star_bourn I'm lucky that I do! Hoping the same for you. Also, yes!! It can be so hard to explain, & I feel like I end up making people so frustrated when I just can't do something, or when they can't interact with something of mine.
I want to hear the backwards words so bad, I listen to this all the time but my brain only registers “this is probably reversed so I don’t need to understand the sounds” NO I want to know this forwards and backwards 😡
@@Tonsofpizza not exactly the same, but yeah it's the same lyrics, just with some extra things jumbled in. The reverse of this song is available on any platform other than here, such as Spotify, iTunes, Bandcamp, etc
Album releases of the song have the reversed part playing where the non-reversed part is in this video, it's basically a far more distorted version of the song with cut-outs and samples and different instrumentation and a lot of strangeness. The lyrics are the same though.
someone commented on a sped up version of the mind electric, "think of these nuts," and I forever cannot unhear it 😭 I listen to sped up music ONCE and this is what I get
When it started going "so so so so so so so so so" in the reversed half, I realised this version is reversed. It's normally the less glitched version that plays first, in reverse. And then "insane" is usually garbled in the forwards half, but here it played normally. Odd choice to put out a reverse version as the official lyric video
yea, but idk why but this version is more calm and good sounding. if someone doesnt like all the glitch sound and the bad sounding, than this lyrics video is the best choice
I'm curious as to what "Service of the Fee Fi Fo Fum" means. Axon dendrite is referring to a neuron. The quick white/red parts that flash definitely remind me of someone's memories being interrupted by something intense. The slower parts are the major parts that got him to where he has come to. When it comes to the line, "Shrieking in the hall of lull thy genius sates a thirst for trouble" has me thinking he's talking about the doctor in a room down a long quiet corridor who is a genius, but has a desire to cause pain (trouble) and see how the teenager reacts to the 'treatment'. Listening to the line, "Electrifying mine chambers wholly scorching out thine sovereignty", basically seems to be talking about how he's losing himself, his sovereign control over his mind and body. I noticed when the teenager says, "Doctor, I can't tell if I'm not me", there are actually what sounds like two distinct voices, one being himself and the other being the insanity from what I can tell. The last two lines, "When it grows bright the particles start to marvel having made it through the night, never they ponder whether electric calming if you look at it right" could be him talking about himself in the third person, how his brain (particles) marvel that he survived through the night, never having considered how calming (the electric shock therapy) could be if you looked at it with the right perspective. This is a very interesting song. Who the Hell even thought that electric therapy helps people? It makes no sense to me. I'll absolutely be listening to this again.
"Fee Fi Fo Fum" is basically a nonsense phrase, as I'm sure you know. The way that I know it is through Jack and the Beanstalk. It's something that the giant says, but there are many other uses of it, such as in Shakespeare's "King Lear". In that play, "fie" is used to express disapproval. Anyway, in Jack and the Beanstalk, I always saw that infamous line as a way to intimidate. I guess maybe "service of the fee fi fo fum" could perhaps mean that whatever is currently happening, whether this song actually takes place in a courtroom in some verses or not, could be making our protagonist feel like everything is out to get him in some sense. Like this whole thing is some sort of secret group designed to intimidate him. It's a stretch, I know.
@@labva6556 That actually sounds plausible. In Jack and the Beanstalk, the way the giant uses it definitely sounds like an intimidation tactic. Probably the protagonist in this song feels so small compared to everyone else. They do call him a minor, so he is obviously young amidst these adults with lots of power. Maybe he finds the whole situation nonsense, since he knows he's innocent. The way it is phrased reminds me of a church service, so it could mean, "Gathering of Nonsense" or "Ridiculous Gathering". 🤔 Thanks for the theories! 😄
The text is black and white, just like the covers of the two tally hall albums. This means that tally hall will reunite in 2069 to produce their third album called "Mucka Blucka Takes Over" In which becomes the greatest and most influential album of all time.
fun fact: the song in this video is actually reversed, if you couldn’t tell already the flashing parts in the song are now gone from the 2nd half but that’s because the version with flashes (aka the insane version) is now the reversed 1st half (you can tell because the word “insane” at 2:37 isn’t in reverse)
@@thememoryfishOkay so basically, the whole song is reversed in this video. The original second half is now the reversed beginning, which you can tell by the distortions and strange piano parts that now appear in the first half; for example, in this video, “insane” is audible forward in the first half, while on the album, it is reversed in the second half. The most noticeable distorted section is a 30 second section around 4:10 on the album version, and at 1:40 here, where the single piano note pierces through everything as various snippets play and stop playing sporadically. Meanwhile, the break between “pray” and “nuns” here is at 4:30, and is only 5 seconds, much shorter than the album version. This also changes the instrumentation for some sections. Compare the “see how the serfs” section at 5:00 to the version on streaming, and you’ll notice a persistent buzzing synth in the album version, for instance. Hope that helps!
@@jexamiThe teslacoil synth in the background is even on HPIIPII, the demos album. It's also the same melody as the Labyrinth (the game) version of The Mind Electric (it's in Hawaii Partii, check it out, the Murders rendition is awesome)
it seems people are returning to this video. i'm here for it. miracle musical is the best 'band' in history (band in quotes because it's more of a project than a band) and any attention brought to it is good. reminder that this music slaps and you should listen through it.

I've loved this song for about a year by now but why are the comments no longer disabled I'm scared Edit: Also lyrics if you couldn't follow them in the video Think of these thoughts as limitless light Exposing closing circuitry of fright Think of each moment holding this breath As death minute in decimal Resident minor, how do you plead? We'll need your testimony on the stand Solemnly swear to tell the whole truth So help you son, now raise your right hand Father your honor, may I explain? My brain has claimed its glory over me I've a good heart albeit insane Condemn him to the infirmary All mine towers crumble down the flowers gasping under rubble Shrieking in the hall of lull, thy genius saves a thirst for trouble Scattering sparks of thought energy Deliver me and carry me away Here in my kingdom I am your Lord I order you to cower and pray Nuns commence incanting as the lightning strikes mine temples thus Electrifying mine chambers, wholly scorching out thine sovereignty So-so-so-so-so-so-so-so spiraling down thy majesty I beg of thee, have mercy on me I was just a boy you see I plead of thee have sympathy for me See how the serfs work the ground (see how they fall!) And they give it all they've got And they give it all they've got And you give it all you've got 'til you're down See how the brain plays around And you fall inside a hole you couldn't see And you fall inside a hole inside a- Someone help me Understand what's going on inside my mind Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me When it grows bright, the particles start to Marvel having made it through the night Never they ponder, weather electric Calming if you look at it right!
This is unironically Joe's Magnum Opus, I kind of want to see the timeline of the original master file to see just how many different tracks and samples are used
My interpretation of this song is the main character claimed to be insane, and due to the shock therapy he went through, he ended up going insane or actaully was insane, because he says, “see how your brain plays around.” Which could be schizophrenia, which might’ve driven him mad, or the shock altered him.
Dam no wonder why there’s a seizure warning. Also my f*cking eyes felt like it was flash-banged 100s of times like jesus christ i felt like I became blind for a few seconds.
Good song, and the flashing lights fit the whole lore, yknow having him go through electric therapy BUT JESUS CHRIST MAN IM NOT EVEN EPILEPTIC AND I FEEL LIKE IM GONNA HAVE A STROKE WATCHING THIS Also wanna point out that the reversed beginning has inverted colors White is black Black is white Red is blue Simply making the reversed more reversed Also it's weird that it has no glitches but still has the reverse ANOTHER weird thing is that the reversed part is the version that DOES have glitches
Well, I never actually noticed the reversed colors, but god, even after 6 years this song, the lyrics vid AND the album are still 1 of the most confusing, most unique, and the most fire album ever (talking about hawaii part II
you guys. if you play this video AND the official album version at the exact same time, they sound so cool together. you have to listen to it all the way through. they lose sync at around 1:20 but pick it back up at around 4:49
I...would have enjoyed watching this but...holy heck the flashing hurts way to damn much. The warning was not seen until after the first wave of flashing, and at that point it was to late.

The longer mix has an abundance of differences aside from the electron misfirings and the labyrinth synth

Now do this in an abandoned water park slide

Never have I seen a piece of art use my own nerves and neurons as a medium to send it's message bravo......
if you have a seizure during this you'll get the full experience
Today I learned that you're supposed to watch this video with your eyes closed! The flashing makes it look like you're getting electrocuted.

WHY IS THE SEIZURE WARNING IN THE DESCRIPTION.
The descriptions used to preview under the title
I love how the only forwards word in the backwards part is “insane.“
The distorted version (the one in Spotify) was the one used on the reverse part, which in case reverses the word "insane" to "enasni"
There's lots of other parts that play forward in that part, notably some choir bits during the shifting interlude, and a lot of the instruments are actually playing forwards.

Also, I just wanted to say that I hope you're doing okay, & just to know that you aren't alone!!
When it started going "so so so so so so so so so" in the reversed half, I realised this version is reversed. It's normally the less glitched version that plays first, in reverse. And then "insane" is usually garbled in the forwards half, but here it played normally.

Thanks Joe, it wasn't fun to listen to it without spitting some good ol' foam
This turned me into Simon

@@Skibidisollux true!
fun fact: the song in this video is actually reversed, if you couldn’t tell already the flashing parts in the song are now gone from the 2nd half but that’s because the version with flashes (aka the insane version) is now the reversed 1st half (you can tell because the word “insane” at 2:37 isn’t in reverse)
YEAH im happy someone else noticed too
Pls explain my fish brain can not comprehend

Why does this video only have 918k views I swear I will commit a Mind Electric.
You'll shock your own brain until it turns insane?
It's a million now, don't seizure yourself
I love this song because every time you listen to it you find something different or new. It's still full of surprises
that's why the distorted version is superior
Flash warning could have been included in the title or the thumbnail.
It's in the desc!
I've loved this song for about a year by now but why are the comments no longer disabled I'm scared
Edit: Also lyrics if you couldn't follow them in the video
Think of these thoughts as limitless light
Exposing closing circuitry of fright
Think of each moment holding this breath
As death minute in decimal
Resident minor, how do you plead?
We'll need your testimony on the stand
Solemnly swear to tell the whole truth
So help you son, now raise your right hand
Father your honor, may I explain?
My brain has claimed its glory over me
I've a good heart albeit insane
Condemn him to the infirmary
All mine towers crumble down the flowers gasping under rubble
Shrieking in the hall of lull, thy genius saves a thirst for trouble
Scattering sparks of thought energy
Deliver me and carry me away
Here in my kingdom I am your Lord
I order you to cower and pray
Nuns commence incanting as the lightning strikes mine temples thus
Electrifying mine chambers, wholly scorching out thine sovereignty
So-so-so-so-so-so-so-so spiraling down thy majesty
I beg of thee, have mercy on me
I was just a boy you see
I plead of thee have sympathy for me
See how the serfs work the ground (see how they fall!)
And they give it all they've got
And they give it all they've got
And you give it all you've got 'til you're down
See how the brain plays around
And you fall inside a hole you couldn't see
And you fall inside a hole inside a-
Someone help me
Understand what's going on inside my mind
Doctor I can't tell if I'm not me
When it grows bright, the particles start to
Marvel having made it through the night
Never they ponder, weather electric
Calming if you look at it right!
I realized this is the reverse version of the full offical song
Has anyone noticed that they reversed the whole song for this video ('tame' version before distorted in og)

The reversed part of “as death minute in decimal” sounds like “homicide”.
This is unironically Joe's Magnum Opus, I kind of want to see the timeline of the original master file to see just how many different tracks and samples are used
It’s like the whole reversed song is a huge subliminal message

My interpretation of this song is the main character claimed to be insane, and due to the shock therapy he went through, he ended up going insane or actaully was insane, because he says, “see how your brain plays around.” Which could be schizophrenia, which might’ve driven him mad, or the shock altered him.
This song is actually in reverse what the fuck

Good song, and the flashing lights fit the whole lore, yknow having him go through electric therapy
BUT JESUS CHRIST MAN IM NOT EVEN EPILEPTIC AND I FEEL LIKE IM GONNA HAVE A STROKE WATCHING THIS
Also wanna point out that the reversed beginning has inverted colors
White is black
Black is white
Red is blue
Simply making the reversed more reversed
Also it's weird that it has no glitches but still has the reverse
ANOTHER weird thing is that the reversed part is the version that DOES have glitches
Well, I never actually noticed the reversed colors, but god, even after 6 years this song, the lyrics vid AND the album are still 1 of the most confusing, most unique, and the most fire album ever (talking about hawaii part II
It actually designed to be watched with your eyes closed so it *feels* like you’re being electrocuted
