- USA easily has the most talented basketball team at the Olympics but are they unstoppable? That’s what people thought when they won gold 3 straight times after the Dream Team but 2004 was a nightmare. Could we see that happen again in Paris?

I was coming to comment the same thing. He just spoke factually and literal. The whole world isn't involved. Yes, there's many players from around the world in the NBA but it doesn't change the fact that the NBA is an american league.

It's not about the players. There's no question that the USA has the best athletes and probably will win gold. But it's about two things, above all. 1: attitude. Will the US team be willing to play defense? Teams like Serbia, Greece, Germany, Spain all play for the honor, for the pride. USA plays for the money. 2: rules. A lot will depend on if the refs will really employ FIBA rules. Take the friendly game vs. Australia as an example. Under strict FIBA rules, the US team would clearly have lost the game...
The US backlash, if they don't get gold, might be so bad that they go back to college players.

I wouldn't say 'in trouble' but they're definitely beatable. The defense is going to have to carry the day, because a lot of these players are too similar. France and Serbia are two contenders who could overthrow them.

The USA team has been lucky with Leonard not playing. White and Holiday are the only reason this team can win, actually. So many "stars" but most of them are at the end of their careers, injury prone or not caring about defense anymore. Without those two this wouldn't be a team, just a bunch of old glories.

Who was on that Argentina team that beat us? Ginobilli and Luis Scola? That US team had many times the talent as Argentina but still lost to them because they weren't a team and were not used to the international game, amongst other reasons. Just go with the results. It doesn't always have to make sense. If we went purely by talent, every team that had more talent would always win in whatever game being played.

In a best out of 7, no way, but in one game anything can happen. Serbia, France, Canada and even Spain (I learned a long time ago to never underestimate them, even when they are not that strong on paper) can bean USA in one game.
Yeah, they beat Serbia by 20+ points yesterday, but Bogdanović, Jović and Milutinov didn't play and their coach obviously experimented with some players that won't even go to the Olympics.

Team USA might be better without KD, Steph and Lebron for this 2028 Olympics. KD is injured and Lebron and Steph were all minus -6 for both exhibition games against Canada and Australia, and Lebron had 7 turnovers. The bench has played much better.

The main strength of the USA team is their depth. The second unit of this current team is probably as good if not better than the starters from the Tokyo Olympics.

We don't need either of them. U.S was winning before and after them, getting 16 gold medals out of 20, more than anyone else in the history of this game. Winning gold is never a priority for our athletes but an enjoyable past time activity. It's the playoffs and the ring that everyone cares about.
Your analysis never talked about international rules difference, defense, & at the end went right back to individual ability considerations (leaning towards offense) rather than team play. A well rounded analysis should include defensive capabilities and team plays where you have selfless guys like Holiday and White but is it enough combined with the coaching while toning down so many egos and how to play LeFlop when his flopping and lazy defense and inconsistent scoring going to drag down the team.

You're completely overlooking team chemistry and strategy. Sure, the U.S. team has the biggest stars, but FIBA basketball of late is dominated by ball movement, reversals and team defense. To win, the US will have to shift away from relying on individual talent - where one guy dances and the rest watch - and become a more cohesive team. Otherwise they WILL lose, despite their stars.

Team USA has no weaknesses. Anything can go wrong in single elimination, but the fact that the entire field is what is measured against team USA instead of any single team only showcases how much deeper they are than anybody.

If they apply strict FIBA rules, it will be a lot more difficult for guys like LBJ to carry the ball, travel, double dribble, shoulder bully etc.
And don’t forget that we have no 3s violation (which can also help the US defend better).
From what I‘ve seen so far, the US rely too much on 3 pts play and there is not enough (at times yes) ball movement.
If Wemby and Gobert manage to play great, he can be a problem. Don’t forget Serbia, the last loss was just a practice game.
Personally I wish the US to fail simply because of the arrogance displayed. Even the 92 team wasn’t that arrogant.

I'm French, but i reckon theirstrong competitor might also be Germany again . I went to one of their preparation game , they were consistent, and driven . Granted, Wembanyama was ill on that day when they beat France. They seemed to have great team chemistry. France is not quite there yet.

If 39 year old, most overrated athlete of all time, LeBron James is their "Best Player", then I'd bet my house they don't medal - but it's pretty clear he's not their best player & the game shouldn't run through him if they want any chance to win.
If you've actually watched Lakers' games & not just glanced at highlights/looked at box scores, then you understand LeBron isn't going to be handed his 14-18 points/game from cheap fouls, uncontested dunks, & straight up cherry picking. Add his atrocious defensive effort, which I'd describe as "being a turnstile" - but turnstiles actually slow people down for a second or two - LeBron doesn't anymore, he's going to be a giant liability. I can't wait to see him get exposed, yet again.

The recent world championship team wasn't their best team but since basketball is a team game, the team with the most superstars doesn't always win. If this year's US team doesn't mesh well together, they could lose to any number of teams.
