Alan Watts - When our identity is defined by society

Alan Watts in his lecture titled Man is a Hoax, declares that there is a contradiction in our personality. Our understanding of the Self is wrong.Society defines being a person to mean the true Self. That is, we define the role of a person as the true individual. However, the word person means a mask. It cannot be the true Self. And this is why the ego breeds a sense of frustration as we tend to identify with this mask.
To be free from this frustration that comes from person-identification, we must resist society's identification of who we are. The whole person / ego identification starts from childhood. Where the child is defined as a stranger in the earth instead of being a part / a symptom / coming out from the earth. This feeling of not being part of the earth is the cause of alienation and of course frustration with the person / personhood / personality - which is the ego. Alan Watts suggests that we must see ourselves as inseparable from the earth, just as the front and back sides of a coin are different but identical - they are part of the one coin.
