Came over from Reddit. I personally think that solarpunk would eliminate the need of capitalism, technically we don't need it now. Money as a concept is obsolete due to the fact we can grow literal tons of food en mass and conserve water a multitude of ways, we live in a post-scarcity world with a mindset that's still in post-feudalism. The start of this movement has only just begun, it may take us far as long as the message remains more important than the aesthetic. Good video, can't wait to see more.

Thank you for the feedback! I personally think that we'd have either have a slow transition away from capitalism or some intense event that causes it to be generally abandoned. I'm going to be exploring heavier topics like this in the future. :)

I'm genuinely interested in how this ethos could manifest without finding a renewable, sustainable, environmentally friendly way of mining cobalt, cadmium, and the other (often toxic) minerals needed to make things like solar panels, high energy-density batteries and other electronics.
It's easy to overlook the impact of the industrial process when it's not in your own backyard. I'm not trying to be confrontational, but I don't think the aesthetic and philosophy can work while at the same time accepting a "necessary evil". I'd love to see it work, but this is the elephant in the room.

Solarpunk is beautiful. I don't want to read solarpunk fiction -- it would lack the cynicism and tension I like in my stories, the pessimistic air that makes the highs that much better.
No, I want to *live* solarpunk. I want to wake up and be bored, to work four to eight hours on something useful and good -- even if it's slightly unpleasant, because hey, toilets need cleaning even in a utopia! -- and then go home and scare myself with horror stories about a world fraught with pollution and capitalism and endless, needless wars.
I want to be bored. What I am right now is terrified, and depressed, and angry, and tired, and so very, very guilty.

    • @TheSolarpunkScene

There are actually a number of pieces of Solarpunk fiction books that include societies in transition or post apocalyptic situations where people are recovering.
I completely feel the same way, and I'm so sorry that you feel so negatively. Please remember to be gentle with yourself and remember that we're all fighting towards a better future. It's heavy to feel like you're carrying that alone but please know that you aren't.

I really dig your style and I can tell this is something you are passionate about.
I do however have a few critiques to hopefully bring your gamr up a little.
    1. Try to maintain eye contact with the camera. I could tell you were either reading something off to the side or trying to remember your lines. That is to be expected if you are new at this! Just something to work on!
    2. Try to be a little more animated when you talk, gestures and body language can really help you sell yourself as a spokesperson and someone to be listened to. Again just takes practice and you will get more comfortable in front of the Camera!
    3. Keep at it! You are hitting a really nice niche and you are doing important work. It would be a ahame if this fell by the wayside!

I like the idea. Everything looks very nice. But I see a few problems:
    1. Society itself is a heat engine. The more people in one place the more emissions. Even if only breathing of people and livestock. The Roman Empire has risen global temperatures by 1 degree.
    2. Cities are not sustainable by definition. You have to import at least food. But also other resources like steel, wood etc. Who is going to work in the mines and how will the machinery in the mines be operated? I assure you that nobody is going to work in a mine for the common good. They will have to be compensated fairly. But how I ask you?
    3. Solar cells break down eventually, and so do batterys. So you have to replace them. Unfortunately there is only enough lithium on this earth to build 1 battery car for every person living right now. No replacements. Once they are all broken down, we are out of the resource. Even if this would not be the case: lithium extraction from lithium brine takes sulfuric acid. And Sulfuric acid is a byproduct of the oil and gas industry. One is not possible without the other.
    4. The number of people on this planet is directly driven by the amount of oil and gas we are using. We are using a cheat in this game of nature. We cheated ourselves into this position by using extra energy. Preserved sunlight in the form of coal and oil. Once those are gone or we decide to stop using them, there is no way of supporting this amount of people. No way of delivering food to far away areas. No way to fertilize fields. No way to feed the population. Batteries just don´t have the energy density to drive a several ton heavy vehicle.
    5. Maybe the most important factor is time. Even if none of the above were true or we could someday overcome the problem, we still have the problem of too little time. The Arctic is about to melt completely. That will plunge us into complete climate chaos. Unpredictable weather patterns and certain crop failure is upon us. We need to take drastic action NOW! Not dream about a Utopian future.
I see the idea as possible but only if one thing happens: 90% of the population goes back to farm work and other physical labor to support the 10% of the smartest people to create progress. That would rise up humanity in a few centuries. But that is not what people feel like doing. Sadly it would be the only way to progress to a civilization type 1 scenario.
What will happen instead is people going about they everyday business. Not seeing the trouble we are in. In fact, actively denying it. Until its very much too late. Once they will start to starve and have no water and shelter, they start moving. They will (or better: we all will) move towards regions that can still support life. People already living in those regions will not want to share since there wont be enough for them. And so on and so on until the last human is gone. With some Nazi shit in-between. You see, the real problem we are facing is us! Its egoism vs. altruism. And altruism looses in every simulation. Its because altruism doesn't have the range of options egoism has in the short run. It has more in the long run but as we are just animals that never evolved too look far into the future, we cannot perceive them and therefor harm each other and life itself in the process.
Dont get me wrong. Heaving an optimistic option for the future is better then heaving non. Utopia is better then dystopia. But let me be blunt here: we have to get rid of the influence of old people. You know the saying: science advances with every grave? Boomers dont give a fuck about later generations. Its all on late stage millennial's and generation z. The rest will do nothing or will even actively work against us. They do not want to pay for their mistakes and they want to live their pitiful lives in comfort till the end. We have to take that comfort away from them. We can do something. Not because our future is in danger - our very present is!

Hope is detrimental for the future, we need to not give up!
