My wife and I moved out of a small City to a 30 Acre homested 23 years ago, it took a lot of effort and we had to learn everything - I mean Everything to be able to produce our own water, food, heat, solar power, septic, how to grow a garden, fruit trees, how to raise a few animals - all just what we need for our family and to swap with like minded neighbors to trade eggs for honey etc. Our elderly neighbor to the East teaches our kids how to sew and make pies, and we clear her snow in the winter - no money needed, we just trade what they can do and what we can do. Honestly I first got the idea for the homestead from Luke Skywalker of Starwars - seeing him working with his aunt and uncle and a few droids in a semi desert to grow food and live in a house cut into the ground to keep cool. That was my first inspiration.
I'm an architect, and I like your idea. I would like to recommend partnering up with an architect and an urban desinger, and if possible, an urban planner on your team to get the best out of this process.

Get some small herb plants for in your kitchen, it’s a lot cheaper, fresher and gets you some gardening experience with immediate benefit. And as far as I’m aware, feeling lost after getting out of college is about the most normal feeling ever. So don’t beat yourself up for it. You’ll get there.
I highly suggest books by Murray Bookchin on social ecology, he's work is so inportant within solarpunk ideals and broader anti-capitalist envirmentalism. For fiction, Ersula Le Guine's The Dispossessed is classic of environmental envision.
Basically, yeah If you haven't played it, the world started to freeze over, and Victorian era Europeans (maybe specifically only the British) moved further north to capitalise on the untapped coal reserves in the arctic and (hopefully) outlive the big freeze
I just wish solar energy paid itself off faster :( they're so expensive, especially where I live, the efficiency starts to degrade before they'd even be paid off.
Part of the key is only needing a few of them. Having a very efficiently insulated home, a smaller footprint, and multiple energy sources so you only need a small PV grid.
They've actually jumped up a little more in regards to the panels in a recent science update so that they're getting more worth out of solar panels. We'll give it a little extra time and I'm sure it'll start getting closer to what we need it to be
it's a nice idea but i've seen too many vids from off the grid youtubers talking about how they get harrassed by people from the state coming in telling them they cant do this or that because it's supposedly illegal like collecting rainwater or whatever. too many times a vid will pop up on my recommended about yet another person trying to live a self sustaining lifestyle only for them to say one of their viewers ratted them out to the state who then came in and threatened to kick them off the land for not being hooked up to city power or sewer or just whatever. so yeah, it's a nice idea but in reality it just seems like the more you want to do this kind of thing, the more push back you get from the powers that be.
A BIG part of Solarpunk is the removal of those systems and the reversal of those laws. It is revolutionary in nature. In the most loving productive sensible peaceful way. But we need to stick together and demand change. There is no doubt we have our work cut out for us.
Then this isn't for you. Hell black people had to defy what the government said for generations just to be allowed to be considered people. If you have no spirit of rebellion just continue to obey. Because you are not going to get a different way of life by doing what the government tells you to do.

While I would argue against this being a "punk", I love the asthetic and I believe this to be our future. Punk has to do with grim futures, not utopian dreamworlds. This animation could be the OPENING to a solarpunk movie, or even be the happy ending of one. I would keep the name, because it's a good name and it fits the visual. But a longer version that depicts some kind of struggling society would push it into actual punk. I am inspired to write a story based in the Solar Punk genre. 🤔

I was talking about the animation itself. The short lacked the drama and commentary to really be called "punk", but you can find a dystopian story around the asthetic. Like I said, I think I'm going to write and/or animate a Solar Punk story. I'm brainstorming ideas as I'm typing this. Something that promotes the lifestyle while telling a compelling story. One idea bouncing around my headspace is the drama being a consequence of previous generations' pollution and other damage. For instance, society is forced into the self-sustaining homestead lifestyle when we ran out of resources. Civilization collapsed, and the Solar Punk story revolves around some of the fallout. Think Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind, but with higher tech; like what you have in the animation.

You’ve got it all wrong. Punk has nothing to do with “grim futures” as you put it. “Punk” simply means anti-establishment/anti-authoritarian in theme in the story. You can certainly have a grim future that’s also a “utopian dreamworld”. Look at “Vivarium” or “Aeon Flux” Also I’ve thought of writing stories based on Solarpunk genre but you quickly run into a corner when you realize there’s little conflict in a utopian world. I’d look to Studio Ghibli for inspiration. Solarpunk stories would likely be more simple visual storytelling than complex mind bending stories.
@@Euphoryaaa I would argue that the examples you gave are actually more grim than you seem to think. I'm not necessarily talking about a fully dystopian future. But a near-utopia or pseudo utopia achieved the way it is in Aeon Flux, for instance, would make for a punk setting. The AF story is very grim and somewhat dystopian, without being truly dystopian. The average citizen has no idea about the artificial nature of the ideological war between Monica and Bregna. The average citizen is not a beaten, starving, barely surviving victim without hope, but a mislead follower that willingly participates in the awfulness, having bought into the ideas of the establishment. The always enemies, sometimes lovers dynamic between Goodchild and Flux is basically a commentary on the relationship between bureaucracy and anarchy. Meanwhile, the citizens are just trying to live their lives. The citizens of Bregna and Monica just want to do their jobs and live their lives. In Bregna, that entails cooperating with their Orwellian technocracy, and for Monica, that means not having some rule introduced that would require some kind obedience and subjugation. Both groups of citizens think that things are, not great, but pretty good. It's a grim reality that isn't, or doesn't appear to be, dystopian. It's far from ideal, but could be a LOT worse. The grimness comes from both cities being on a knife's edge, where just the wrong move would plunge both cities into dystopian nightmare territory.

A bit of hopefully well recieved critique: Have you actually reviewed the extensive literature and technology and policy alternatives to what your site refers to as "energy density," (a disappointing euphemisim, code for not just fossil fuels but nuclear)? There are a large number of poseurs hyping their expertise about nuclear, or energy, or farming, or fertilizer, or economics, or materials, or engineering or etc, etc, who actually know very little about and are perhaps unwilling to learn, the history and practice of ecological society. Indeed, for the most part, resorting to the empty "energy density" argument is a desperate rhetorical and unimaginative analytical turn to argue for whatever nuclear advocates conceive as necessary for continuing the current forms of unsustainable consumer capitalisms and psychic numbing that center cold war technocracy and balance of terror as the best the present and future can offer. Every one of the "new nuclear" proposals rely on shredding the last of the various treaty obligations that have kept nuclear war at bay, and instead return us to abandoned technologies like reprocessing and SMR's that were abandoned for good reason, not only by tough minded environmental scientists but by war gamers, utility execs and energy czars alike. Pretending that the hard lessons learned in the twentieth century don't apply in the 21st is to embrace ithe ignorance of those doomed to repreat them. Of the many existential, global theats facing humanity, nuclear war and and catastrophic nuclear industrial accidents are the only ones that can happen, literally, tomorrow. Unless your solarpunk visions include genuine soft path transitions from both nuclear weapons and energy, and a genuine and comprehensive critique of the nuclear weapons and energy complex, it is neither "solar" nor "punk," just another "all of the above" scheme with horrific endings. There are extensive simulations of socio-environmental transitions at scale with peaceful, democratic, non-nuclear political economies and technical bases, including quite a few spacefaring ones, if that's your thing, far beyond the individual homesteader or bare bones ecovillage-lite version you have rolled out with Land Lab so far. I urge you to consider learning into how to integrate the land lab approach with this wider stream of ecological design, production and community building efforts at scale, (and shrugging off the need to tie yourself rhetorically to being the "new"), taking on the heavier and more humbling lift of "a world that works for everyone". Thanks again for the many good and accessible elements of the Land Lab project so far, especially the DIY simulations and your commitment to field testing. I'd be interested in participating in API integration with some of the scaling work referred to above. Good beginnings, but please, drop the technocratic baggage.

Absolutely. The key is NOT centralized control or forcing these ideas. They HAVE to be grassroots. I don't want to force anybody to do anything. However, I am personally implementing all of these systems. Organic, decentralized growth has always been the BEST way to improve society. Communist planners and top-down controllers clearly illustrate the failure of centralized, top-down totalitarian controls. People thrive having independence and freedom to innovate, solve problems locally, and let the evolution of ideas run its course.
And there's gotta be cost benefits to it. Thats the seller right there. And i believe it will be. Look at solar technology over the years. I love what you guys are doing.
No offense but this is might unrealistic. Localization would destroy variety being available. Because you will be limited only to what can be grown locally. Want an orange or a banana? Sorry, can't grow them in your zone. Spices? Coffee? Forget it. Besides all that food shipping infrastructure prevents local famine. You often have a bad growing year in one state but not another. It's good to grow your own food as an individual but that wouldn't reduce vehicle traffic. Because the land is concentrated in the hands of a small wealthy few. The median American owns no land. Let that sink in. The median American OWNS NO LAND. So you wouldn't really take that many cars off the road then. Living in a rural environment really really skews your perspective on what actually matters and makes a difference. This approach would only alter the lives of a fraction of a fraction of the few. And it doesn't even work. You'd cause starvation and death. The ability to get food grown anywhere to where people need it is critical to the world. I agree that locally grown food is a worthwhile endeavor as it provides some security against supply chain interruption, and its a cool lifestyle. But I dont see how it would make any positive impact on society as a whole. Because it doesnt scale.
The key is balance & diversity. Right now there's a total lack of balance with little to nothing being produced locally. Coffee and spices are fantastic, easy to ship, and I think we all still want access to those :) Veggies, beef, and other bulk items can often be produced locally. Energy can be harnessed locally. The key is to not go to either of extreme of relying on 100% global sources, or 100% local sources. If we can balance both, we get the best of both worlds, minimize car dependence, and enjoy amazing products from afar.

The biggest impediment is local govt zoning, some fed govt financial regulations, big corporations lobbying for special laws to protect them, NIMBYs stifling creative homes and local ag, and beuracrats trying to exert too much control over others (pointlessly, just for their egos). These ideas work, and they're affordable and sustainable. The lack of awareness and education is the other issue. But once people are educated, I think they will demand to strip away the controlling laws and misguided restrictions around many of these creative ideas.
So much of what you do and say makes sense, until.....it comes to solar. While I am all for greener energy; I despise when government (not you guys) try to shove a "green alternative" down our throats when it is nowhere near green . Case in point. We have to do some hefty mining to make these batteries but have no plan in place for dealing with their short life.... they're not much better than nuclear waste if you simply landfill them. Then there is the issue of massive solar farms. They shade the earth and change the temperature as well as the fact that they are destroying ecosystems by creating them. I do understand that you are encouraging small scale. That is so much more sustainable. It's homes that concrete over every available square inch of space; have 6 bedrooms and baths for essentially 2 people and nothing but miles of monoculture grass that's a bigger problem. Also that we insist on trying to channel rain water into drainage systems instead of into the earth so we can recharge aquifers and our water table.

We’re aware it’s a yogurt ad :) We used the unbranded version. Point is, it’s better than using BladeRunner to sell yogurt. That’s not news for us. We have all the key tech already to make a better, decentralized world a reality. The videos point is about art and storytelling. Your points are solid, but the point of this video is to give people a fresh vision of something different. Otherwise Brave New World is 100% guaranteed. It’s already happening. However, my own life is already more like this video in terms of being more embedded in nature. We all fall on a spectrum, and the hope is to pull more people towards this simpler, greener end. And avoid Huxleys imminent vision for the world
Solar punk is just art meant to inspire. Our offgrid land lab is actual real-life Solar punk. That’s the distinction. If any of it inspires other people to take some action and live differently in a more independent and ecological manner, then either has served a good purpose.

I'm not necessarily talking about a fully dystopian future. But a near-utopia or pseudo utopia achieved the way it is in Aeon Flux, for instance, would make for a punk setting. The AF story is very grim and somewhat dystopian, without being truly dystopian. The average citizen has no idea about the artificial nature of the ideological war between Monica and Bregna. The average citizen is not a beaten, starving, barely surviving victim without hope, but a mislead follower that willingly participates in the awfulness, having bought into the ideas of the establishment.
The always enemies, sometimes lovers dynamic between Goodchild and Flux is basically a commentary on the relationship between bureaucracy and anarchy. Meanwhile, the citizens are just trying to live their lives. The citizens of Bregna and Monica just want to do their jobs and live their lives. In Bregna, that entails cooperating with their Orwellian technocracy, and for Monica, that means not having some rule introduced that would require some kind obedience and subjugation. Both groups of citizens think that things are, not great, but pretty good.
It's a grim reality that isn't, or doesn't appear to be, dystopian. It's far from ideal, but could be a LOT worse. The grimness comes from both cities being on a knife's edge, where just the wrong move would plunge both cities into dystopian nightmare territory.

A bit of hopefully well recieved critique: Have you actually reviewed the extensive literature and technology and policy alternatives to what your site refers to as "energy density," (a disappointing euphemisim, code for not just fossil fuels but nuclear)? There are a large number of poseurs hyping their expertise about nuclear, or energy, or farming, or fertilizer, or economics, or materials, or engineering or etc, etc, who actually know very little about and are perhaps unwilling to learn, the history and practice of ecological society.
Indeed, for the most part, resorting to the empty "energy density" argument is a desperate rhetorical and unimaginative analytical turn to argue for whatever nuclear advocates conceive as necessary for continuing the current forms of unsustainable consumer capitalisms and psychic numbing that center cold war technocracy and balance of terror as the best the present and future can offer. Every one of the "new nuclear" proposals rely on shredding the last of the various treaty obligations that have kept nuclear war at bay, and instead return us to abandoned technologies like reprocessing and SMR's that were abandoned for good reason, not only by tough minded environmental scientists but by war gamers, utility execs and energy czars alike. Pretending that the hard lessons learned in the twentieth century don't apply in the 21st is to embrace ithe ignorance of those doomed to repreat them.
Of the many existential, global theats facing humanity, nuclear war and and catastrophic nuclear industrial accidents are the only ones that can happen, literally, tomorrow. Unless your solarpunk visions include genuine soft path transitions from both nuclear weapons and energy, and a genuine and comprehensive critique of the nuclear weapons and energy complex, it is neither "solar" nor "punk," just another "all of the above" scheme with horrific endings. Moreover, you are skewing your design sensibility and outcomes by avoiding the actual design challenges and opportunities of comprehensive community and societal transitions. There are extensive simulations of socio-environmental transitions at scale with peaceful, democratic, non-nuclear political economies and technical bases, including quite a few spacefaring ones, if that's your thing, far beyond the individual homesteader or bare bones ecovillage-lite version you have rolled out with Land Lab so far. I urge you to consider learning into how to integrate the land lab approach with this wider stream of ecological design, production and community building efforts at scale, (and shrugging off the need to tie yourself rhetorically to being the "new"), taking on the heavier and more humbling lift of "a world that works for everyone".
Thanks again for the many good and accessible elements of the Land Lab project so far, especially the DIY simulations and your commitment to field testing. I'd be interested in participating in API integration with some of the scaling work referred to above.

Absolutely. The key is NOT centralized control or forcing these ideas. They HAVE to be grassroots. I don't want to force anybody to do anything. However, I am personally implementing all of these systems. Organic, decentralized growth has always been the BEST way to improve society. Communist planners and top-down controllers clearly illustrate the failure of centralized, top-down totalitarian controls. People thrive having independence and freedom to innovate, solve problems locally, and let the evolution of ideas run its course.

No offense but this is might unrealistic. Localization would destroy variety being available. Because you will be limited only to what can be grown locally. Want an orange or a banana? Sorry, can't grow them in your zone. Spices? Coffee? Forget it. Besides all that food shipping infrastructure prevents local famine. You often have a bad growing year in one state but not another. It's good to grow your own food as an individual but that wouldn't reduce vehicle traffic. Because the land is concentrated in the hands of a small wealthy few. The median American owns no land. Let that sink in. The median American OWNS NO LAND. So you wouldn't really take that many cars off the road then.
Living in a rural environment really really skews your perspective on what actually matters and makes a difference. This approach would only alter the lives of a fraction of a fraction of the few. And it doesn't even work. You'd cause starvation and death.
The ability to get food grown anywhere to where people need it is critical to the world. I agree that locally grown food is a worthwhile endeavor as it provides some security against supply chain interruption, and its a cool lifestyle. But I dont see how it would make any positive impact on society as a whole. Because it doesnt scale.
The key is balance & diversity. Right now there's a total lack of balance with little to nothing being produced locally. Coffee and spices are fantastic, easy to ship, and I think we all still want access to those :) Veggies, beef, and other bulk items can often be produced locally. Energy can be harnessed locally.
The key is to not go to either of extreme of relying on 100% global sources, or 100% local sources. If we can balance both, we get the best of both worlds, minimize car dependence, and enjoy amazing products from afar.

The biggest impediment is local govt zoning, some fed govt financial regulations, big corporations lobbying for special laws to protect them, NIMBYs stifling creative homes and local ag, and beuracrats trying to exert too much control over others (pointlessly, just for their egos). These ideas work, and they're affordable and sustainable. The lack of awareness and education is the other issue. But once people are educated, I think they will demand to strip away the controlling laws and misguided restrictions around many of these creative ideas.

So much of what you do and say makes sense, until.....it comes to solar. While I am all for greener energy; I despise when government (not you guys) try to shove a "green alternative" down our throats when it is nowhere near green . Case in point. We have to do some hefty mining to make these batteries but have no plan in place for dealing with their short life.... they're not much better than nuclear waste if you simply landfill them. Then there is the issue of massive solar farms. They shade the earth and change the temperature as well as the fact that they are destroying ecosystems by creating them. I do understand that you are encouraging small scale. That is so much more sustainable. It's homes that concrete over every available square inch of space; have 6 bedrooms and baths for essentially 2 people and nothing but miles of monoculture grass that's a bigger problem. Also that we insist on trying to channel rain water into drainage systems instead of into the earth so we can recharge aquifers and our water table.

We've had the technology for ages, realistically the main content is and has been possible outside of the cutest magic-technology has been possible for decades, the large difference is in the political will to achieve it

We have all the key tech already to make a better, decentralized world a reality. The videos point is about art and storytelling. Your points are solid, but the point of this video is to give people a fresh vision of something different. Otherwise Brave New World is 100% guaranteed. It’s already happening. However, my own life is already more like this video in terms of being more embedded in nature. We all fall on a spectrum, and the hope is to pull more people towards this simpler, greener end. And avoid Huxleys imminent vision for the world
Solar punk is just art meant to inspire. Our offgrid land lab is actual real-life Solar punk. That’s the distinction. If any of it inspires other people to take some action and live differently in a more independent and ecological manner, then either has served a good purpose.
