I love that they’re things you’d actually wear. I feel like a lot of beginner projects are things I would never want to keep which defeats the purpose. So thank you for the suggestions!
As a crocheter, I'm really tempted to get into sewing because I'm so used to creating something stitch by stitch... the idea of already having the fabric and 'just' sewing it together seems like cheating 😂
Haha when you put it that way sewing is totally cheating 🤣 You have far more patience than I do for sure, and you should definitely give sewing a go. Come to the dark side 🤣🤣
As a knitter who **just** started sewing, it REALLY DOES feel like cheating, but it’s also much more challenging and time-consuming than that “knitting” mindset led me to believe - if that makes sense. Lol. You don’t have to create the fabric itself stitch by stitch, but it kind of feels like each sewing project is perpetually in what would be the final stages of a knit project.. the more-fiddly parts that require more brain power. Lol. For example, weaving in ends, Kitchener stitching seams together, sewing on buttons, binding off in a particular pattern, etc, etc. For me, knitting is an almost-mindless activity except for those “finishing” steps on certain projects. Somehow sewing seems to feel like the whole project is those kind of finishing steps and almost no “mindless” activity, but it very well could be because I just started and still have to concentrate so hard on everything. It is incredibly fun, though! And SUPER satisfying/rewarding when you can start and finish a project within such a small time frame when compared to knitting/crochet.

"Don't make a pillow if a pillow doesn't excite you." YES! The first thing I ever sewed was a play outfit for my son, without a pattern just drafting it myself. It was really difficult and I learned so many skills (also took me weeks to make where a master sewer with a pattern could have easily made it in like an hour or two) but I had SO much fun, learned a ton, and now my son has a cute and unique outfit. Such a fan of doing what excites you when starting a new hobby, rather than just what's easiest.
thank you!!! as a beginner, I found the Kiana Bonollo turtleneck AMAZING! it's so easy and it's SO flattering and so easy to dress up / down.! I made like 3 already

Hello Caitlynn ! Thanks for sharing your suggestions for beginner sewers ! Hope you don't mind me commenting, but I would like to let you know about the BRENÉ camisole top. This is a sewing pattern from my own indie brand called Ose Patterns ("ose" means "being bold" in French). I created this pattern with beginners in mind. The pattern, instructions and videos are in English. To tell you about my background, I changed my career to study at a fashion school and in a maison for two years. I learnt pattern making with the draping technique so this is how I create my designs. Happy summertime !
Hi! This video is so helpful as a beginner and inspired me so much ❤ Your energy is so lovely and contagious, I instantly had to subscribe. Looking forward to watching more of your videos!
Hello! Yay I'm so glad you found it helpful! Thank you so much, that's so kind of you! New video is going live tomorrow morning! 😊 ❤ Thanks so much for subscribing!
I just started sewing and so far, I have made a ton of potholders (I'm planning on giving them as Christmas gifts) and a few scrunchies. I really want to start clothing, but I have been really nervous that they would be too difficult since I am very new but I like a lot of these so I think I might give them a try! Thanks for sharing these!
Thank you so much for sharing!! All the dresses look beautiful, which fabric did you use for the vogue dress? Also, do you have any recommendations as in to where to get the fabrics from?
Great video! I’ve been sewing for years, but these are still patterns I want to check out. I think it’s so important to choose patterns that make you excited to work on it and want to wear the item. My first project was a lined purse (like a tote bag with a flat bottom). I wanted it so much, and even now more than 10 years after I still wear it a lot. Now that I think about it I brought it to the gym just earlier today.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found some patterns that interest you here! I 100% agree! I love that, a little bit of sewing work to enjoy something for the next 10+ years is so satisfying. 😊❤️ Thanks so much for watching!
I hope you see this this comment because I’m dying to know where you source your fabrics. I’m struggling to find quality fabric that I’d actually wear. All your stuff looks so pretty and well done too. Thank you for postin !!!💕💕💕
Thank you! I mainly get my fabric by thrifting (curtains, tablecloths, etc), JoAnn or Etsy. For the best quality I try to stick to natural fibers and heavier weight materials as much as possible. Hope that helps!
Absolutely love 💕 the fact that most of your recommendations were dresses and from a few other TH-camr’s two of them in which I already knew about 😊 Kiana Bonollo is a true gem 💎 On another note for you to be fairly new to sewing your skills are definitely at a professional level you could literally sell any of those pieces you made and people would absolutely adore them.
So glad you enjoyed it! I've learned from watching youtube, so I'll always recommend the channels that helped me (and still do) along the way. :) Thank you so much, that's so kind! Thanks for watching!
This is such good inspo to start sewing! What sewing machine and tools/ materials would you suggest to buy to get started? I would love love love to see a video on this ❤❤
Yay I'm so glad you found it helpful! I am in the process of making a video on this so definitely stay tuned for a detailed answer to this question! In general I would say start small and cheap (second hand machine, thrifted materials, basic beginner sewing kit for needles pins etc). Sewing can get expensive quickly so best to start small and affordable and make sure you like it before you invest. :)
Do you remember what kind of fabric you used for your second recommendation (the graduation dress)? Specifically, the cream one I love the way it hangs and I am going to make one soon! \
You're such a cutie :) I also made the Isila dress in dark green, it turned out so cute. But the sleeves were so complicated to make! I see you skipped those haha
Aw thanks! 😊❤️ I have never attempted the sleeves, I’ll have to mention that next time I bring it up for sure! Now I need to try them! Thanks for watching ❤️
I don’t know exactly what fabric it was but it was a four-way-stretch synthetic material I got at JoAnn. It pilled and snagged super easily so it’s really the only fabric I’ve used that I wouldn’t recommend unfortunately haha. But I think you’d get a similar finish as long as it’s a four way stretch material with a bit of weight. Hope that helps some! Thanks for watching!
Thank you! Most of my makes do not require a bra for me. Strapless is definitely the best bet for a lot of them or any sticky bra options. Also recommend sewing in support if needed. Hope that helps some!
Thank you! I'm so glad you found it helpful! Personally I recommend getting something second hand. My first sewing machine was a Singer I found on Facebook Marketplace for like $70 and it served me really well. I wouldn't recommend getting anything digital to start with personally, but I think it has a lot to do with personal preference. I say start with something affordable and make sure you like it and then invest in something fancier/more specific to your needs later. :)
Hi I'm actually 61 yrs and just started sewing. Left work due to breast cancer. I'm in remission now. I just love your self taught. Can you re recomend thar u tube sewing guide. Was it Essential? Xxx
Hi there! I’m sorry to hear that, but hope that your health continues to improve! Congratulations on starting sewing, I hope you love it! TH-cam is a great place to learn for sure. I think you’re referring to the channel I mentioned, “The Essentials Club”. That is a great channel to check out for beginner friendly makes. 😊❤️ Thanks for watching!
Hi! I love finding fabric at thrift stores the most, definitely check your local shops. In person I go to JoAnn or Hobby Lobby since I don’t have any local shops where I live. But some great small business fabric stores that you can order from online are Blackbird Fabrics or Salt Lake Sewciety. 😊❤️
can you PLEASE do a tutorial or a reel on how you made that elastic bust top? (your first make) it looks like a fold over top but my brain can’t compute how to make it!
Hi! I will absolutely put it on my list of "reels I should make". I will try to explain what I did one more time quickly in hopes that it helps you though: So I followed The Essential's Club's tutorial step by step (highly recommend) the only adjustment I made was that I added an extra 4 inches to the height of the rectangle that you'll cut out. I then placed the elastic channel about 4 inches from the top of the rectangle. Once I put the finished garment on the fabric naturally folded over since my arms pushed it down on the side. I promise it was super easy to do, no secret extra steps, I'm positive you could create it no problem. :) Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!
Of course! I hope you found it helpful! Thank you, I shared a few different versions of the Isila Dress. The blue was made from thrifted curtains that were sort of a brocade fabric, the pink was a linen blend from JoAnne, and the green was a linen suiting fabric. I hope that helps! Thanks for watching! :)
@@CaitMakes Thank you, that helps! Maybe I missed it but what about the one you used for the wedding? Also, did you make it as a circle skirt? I'm so new to sewing ^^'
@happymochinee the one for the wedding was made from curtains I found at the thrift store, they were a thick brocade fabric. I used the Isila pattern for the skirt as well, it’s a half circle skirt I believe. Hope that helps! :)
Can you start doing tutorials with some of the patterns you recommend. Like testing a pattern and showing a beginner how to do it? I’ve been trying to find videos like that but they never explain it well enough or go way too fast
Here is a playlist of all my "Sew With Me" videos where I do quite a few of the patterns from this video: th-cam.com/play/PLVmOzSIIo3_6t6t610WbKTqr23jdBMuhA.html
Definitely try any of Lydia Naomi's patterns that I recommended she has great in-depth tutorials for beginners to go along with each of her patterns. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching!
Please make a video of the alterations for the Mal Dress. I saw it and got excited and then disappointed remembering I need breastfeeding access. Then back to excited when you said you made alterations lol
The alterations were honestly super simple, I used this TH-cam video in order to make the changes that I did. Definitely check this one out she did a great job: th-cam.com/video/fUYGjM0TCfI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=yXfL2U3boWlpI-em

It pilled and snagged super easily so it’s really the only fabric I’ve used that I wouldn’t recommend unfortunately haha. But I think you’d get a similar finish as long as it’s a four way stretch material with a bit of weight. Hope that helps some! Thanks for watching!
They are all stunning, but do you wear bras with all of them? I feel I would need to but then the bodice part wouldn't look as great. Any tips?
Thank you! Most of my makes do not require a bra for me. Strapless is definitely the best bet for a lot of them or any sticky bra options. Also recommend sewing in support if needed. Hope that helps some!
Great choices!!!
Thanks! ❤️
such a helpful video and looking at ur content i cant wait to watch more
I’m so glad you found it helpful! Thank you, thank you! 😊❤️
I’m so glad I found this video! Thank you for these wonderful recommendations. Where do you find your fabrics?
Of course! So glad you found it helpful! I do a lot of Thrifting (goodwill mostly), otherwise I source from JoAnn or Etsy. :)
This is such a great video for beginners💗! Do you have any machine recommendations for beginners?
❤
I love this! Just in time for summer
So glad you enjoyed it! Thanks so much for watching and best of luck with your upcoming Summer projects! :)
amazing thank you for this
Thanks for watching! 😊❤️
I want to make all of these!
Yay so glad you found it helpful!
Hey!! Are there any fabric stores that you would recommend? I want to get into sowing clothes but haven’t found a ton of good places to get fabric.
Hi! I love finding fabric at thrift stores the most, definitely check your local shops. In person I go to JoAnn or Hobby Lobby since I don’t have any local shops where I live. But some great small business fabric stores that you can order from online are Blackbird Fabrics or Salt Lake Sewciety. 😊❤️
@@CaitMakes Thank you so much!
How much fabric did u use for the isila dress?
can you PLEASE do a tutorial or a reel on how you made that elastic bust top? (your first make)
it looks like a fold over top but my brain can’t compute how to make it!
Thank you for sharing!!! May I ask, what fabric did you use for the Isila Dress? It's so beautiful!
@@CaitMakes thank you so much!! 💕
Wow! You look like a completely different person with dark hair. I didn't even know it was you, until you said it! :O
Haha yes, I tend to change my hair a lot. The face stays the same, but the hair rarely does 😂
Loved your video❤
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it and hope to see you back again soon! 😊❤️
How flattering is your blonde hair? It suits you so well.
Aw thanks so much! 😊❤️
That graduation dress???? 🤯
Right!? One of the best patterns ever 😊❤️
Just to say...beautiful lady
Thank you ☺️
you look like Ella Purnell!
Haha well thank you! 😊❤️
You're too young to know what I'm referring to, but WOW you look like the character 'Blair' on the Facts of Life!!!
Haha unfortunately I didn’t know but I did look her up and thank you I’ll definitely take that as a compliment. 😊❤️ Thanks for watching!
your easy patterns would not be my choice. a ruffle top. yikes. i’d start with an elastic skirt. 😜
You haven't style them all , these were made by other youtube channel .
👆🏼 The downfall to changing my hair color and style every five minutes 🤣🤣🤣
too much repetition and narcissism
WOW what a comment haha😅 where exactly was the narcissism?🙈
