Bob has never been more wrong about a game than about Nine Sols. I'm not even a big fan of the game but the entire system of parrying and paying off damage is among the best any 2D platformer has ever done it. I don't know what the game could have done "better" to make him like it, unless he just hates any parry that doesn't instantly end the enemy. Also I know it takes a long-ass time to develop, but the story is pretty good. Some really engaging worldbuilding, and a surprisingly unique main character.
yeah Nine Sols has maybe the best combat of any 2d game I've played. The non-combat aspects are just okay imo, but that's all they need to be when the fighting is that strong.
Bob (and Dan to a lesser extent) is very bad at criticism. He speaks very declaratively, and uses very overly spiteful language, even when he didn’t actually hate the game that much. He refers to anything he doesn’t like as “terrible” and “horrible” instead of just going “I didn’t like it” or “It was not for me.”
The parry system is absurdly unforgiving, especially with how fragile the MC is, and it has the standard indie problem where the game is overtuned early on but is far more forgiving later. No player should be facing off against mooks that can twoshot them before they've even got used to the controls. The centaur, especially, was a totally ridiculous first boss and I can absolutely see why people would bounce, especially as well much of the powerset building tools were locked behind beating him. It would be like blocking gear purchases and rune leveling behind Margit. Everybody would hate that and be right to do so. The way it handled death and regeneration was pathetic, too. You could lose resources from chests and other one-time loot points forever. That is something From carefully avoids in their games: the currencies you can lose only come from the monsters that regenerate when you rest. Nine Sols devs didn't understand that, or why it works that way. Doesn't help that the in game economy is so extremely cash-starved. Great core idea, but trash QA, probably because they expected players to just put themselves in Baby Mode if they banged against the game's lack of a decent flow curve.
Did see Red One. Not sure how much it links into 'Fascist', but that sure is The Rock turning to the camera in a Christmas Movie and going "The War on Terror was, is and always will be morally defensible and justified."

I thought Nine Sols was fantastic so I'm really shocked Bob hated it. I've never had an issue with the pickup button not working so I'm curious what's causing it. I don't agree with most of his criticisms but I def see where he's coming from in terms of boss difficulty spikes though. Also unless we have different definitions of bosses, I got to the first one around an hour in so I'm surprised it took him over 2.
Given the way he was explaining things and how he was saying enemies took forever to kill, I think he was trying to play it like Sekiro and not nine sols. That being, he was just parrying and using the talisman, not swinging his sword at all. A lot of the complaints that didn't really make sense suddenly make a lot more sense if he was never using the sword. It's.... baffling how he'd end up playing like that, but I'm not sure what else would explain it.
@@tnzwelk seems like an extremely bob thing to do. sets expectations before engaging with the product, refuses to ever adjust expectations, judges it by those initial expectations. every time bob makes a product review it's always literally "i formed this idea of a perfect god thing in my head and it doesn't quite match up to the perfect god thing I imagined so it's [1-6/10]. he also always performs this bit to fucking crickets and it's amazing how he hasn't realized he's the problem yet

I would ballpark his success rate of actually being able to tell you why he doesn't like a thing at around 15%. Everything else is just sweeping statements of "it's bad"

Gonna have to strongly disagree about the Nine Sols talk, I’ve gotten about as far into it as was discussed, maybe a bit further, and I can’t say I’ve seen all that much repetition. There’s certainly similar theming to areas but there’s not much overlap to the environment, it’s a very pretty game. The combat also wants you to attack and parry, with proper timing you can dish out multiple attacks at basically the same time. There’s also items that give you “souls” and a trader you can find around the time of that first proper boss.
really dont understand the complaint about all the enviroments all being samey when shit like the apeman processing plant has unique animations and flourishes for each step in the harvesting procedure and having a big ass red petal garden in the center, the game thrives in enviromental design. this is the first episode ive seen of this podcast other than the 13s review so im assuming bob is the gameplay first arin hanson archetype of gamer
He's likely only got to the first boss and dipped after the insane difficulty spike. Nine Sols was beautiful but with miserable balancing. Because that's what happens when you think "story mode" is One Neat Trick to get out of running proper playtests.
Also the game is miserly with the "souls" items to the point that it's almost a sick joke. They were TERRIFIED of players outleveling the parry mechanic, to the point that they gatekept the dash until long after you'd have wanted it.
Oh my god I just got a new windows 11 laptop and it is ALSO DOING THE SAME SHIT DAN DESCRIBED WHERE SOUND JUST WON'T PLAY FOR LIKE A SECOND IF NO SOUND HAS PLAYED FOR TEN SECONDS. I spent hours trying to troubleshoot it and could not fucking find a solution that worked so I just gave up and it's something I'll just have to live with I guess. In the process of troubleshooting I discovered that you can no longer meaningfully set your laptop's power plan in the control panel because "balanced" is the only option! It's so cool how windows decided I don't need a better power plan that won't arbitrarily turn off shit I need, like FUCKING SOUND! There are so many ways in which Windows 11 feels like something that should get Microsoft tried in court. It's such an inexcusably obtrusive and non-functional operating system.
Bob really needs to learn the difference between "this thing is of poor quality" and "this thing is not for me" I have never in my life seen someone so proudly and confidently be like "yes i am the taste arbiter this game is not the things i like and its a huge piece of shit actually arent i worldly and clever *squidward ass laugh*"

re: Nine Sols, idk if this is bob just not paying attention to the main mechanic (like I did for a good portion of the start of the game) but you have to hold the button to detonate talismans. it's a huge damage difference and probably the reason why it feels like everything doesn't take much damage to him currently. there's also 3 different potential "first bosses" so I don't really see the limited path thing he mentioned unless he just flat ignored another path since it's not some like speedrun tech or prior knowledge required for the others.
every new issue Dan discovers/reveals about Windows 11 further convinces me to ride this 10 box out as far as it'll go and then just toss a coin for one of those M4 Mac Minis or going Linux, I've sworn off upgrading my shit beyond increasing drive capacities as is

We know a few concrete things about Rebirth's sales: It's selling about half as much as much as Remake. Kitase said that it's sales aren't anything to worry about, BUT, they won't be shipping their games with console exclusivity anymore. It's just not a viable option. So they're going to be crunching down that third game for 2witch for sure. Whatever dev costs a Sony deal might have covered for them isn't worth a complete lack of domestic presence and half the install base of the PS4. If the game's safe despite only having half the sales of the original it might cost less than anyone assumed- they did manage to almost completely retain the staff of the first game. 85% if I remember correctly. It's a remake and a sequel at the same time so preproduction would have been incredibly fast and dirt cheap. Kitase could have been talking out of his ass so investors don't get scared but if he's telling the truth I have to imagine they just have their shit together in a way that few teams do.

Maybe I just didn’t use it as much as I thought, but Merchant didn’t feel that broken economy wise in Metaphor? I was pretty consistently draining my funds on gear and never felt like I outpaced the economy for the entire game, only had like 15k when doing the final boss

Space Marine 2 is twice as expensive as it should have been. That is not a $70 game. Its also GAAS slop, it released with less in it than the first game and all that content, plus all the visual customization for money, is coming later

Gonna have to strongly disagree about the Nine Sols talk, I’ve gotten about as far into it as was discussed, maybe a bit further, and I can’t say I’ve seen all that much repetition. There’s certainly similar theming to areas but there’s not much overlap to the environment, it’s a very pretty game. The combat also wants you to attack and parry, with proper timing you can dish out multiple attacks at basically the same time. There’s also items that give you “souls” and a trader you can find around the time of that first proper boss.
really dont understand the complaint about all the enviroments all being samey when shit like the apeman processing plant has unique animations and flourishes for each step in the harvesting procedure and having a big ass red petal garden in the center, the game thrives in enviromental design. this is the first episode ive seen of this podcast other than the 13s review so im assuming bob is the gameplay first arin hanson archetype of gamer
He's likely only got to the first boss and dipped after the insane difficulty spike. Nine Sols was beautiful but with miserable balancing. Because that's what happens when you think "story mode" is One Neat Trick to get out of running proper playtests.
Also the game is miserly with the "souls" items to the point that it's almost a sick joke. They were TERRIFIED of players outleveling the parry mechanic, to the point that they gatekept the dash until long after you'd have wanted it.
I can't wait for you guys to be viscerally upset that GTA6 plays nothing like a GTA game somehow.

Oh my god I just got a new windows 11 laptop and it is ALSO DOING THE SAME SHIT DAN DESCRIBED WHERE SOUND JUST WON'T PLAY FOR LIKE A SECOND IF NO SOUND HAS PLAYED FOR TEN SECONDS. I spent hours trying to troubleshoot it and could not fucking find a solution that worked so I just gave up and it's something I'll just have to live with I guess. In the process of troubleshooting I discovered that you can no longer meaningfully set your laptop's power plan in the control panel because "balanced" is the only option! It's so cool how windows decided I don't need a better power plan that won't arbitrarily turn off shit I need, like FUCKING SOUND!
There are so many ways in which Windows 11 feels like something that should get Microsoft tried in court. It's such an inexcusably obtrusive and non-functional operating system.

Nah, Nine Sols had miserable balancing and clearly not anywhere near enough playtesting. This was their first action game and it clearly showed.

Andrew Dice (@SpaceDraceCF) and Carpe Fulgur are doing perfectly fine, actually. They helped with Super Robot Wars 30 and Trails Through Daybreak. They also retweeted the Recettear HD announcement, so safe to say that we will be getting an English version eventually.
Also, the game that nearly broke Carpe Fulgur was Trails in the Sky SC. They are doing much better now.
That explains some of the horrifically bad lines in those games.

re: Nine Sols, idk if this is bob just not paying attention to the main mechanic (like I did for a good portion of the start of the game) but you have to hold the button to detonate talismans. it's a huge damage difference and probably the reason why it feels like everything doesn't take much damage to him currently. there's also 3 different potential "first bosses" so I don't really see the limited path thing he mentioned unless he just flat ignored another path since it's not some like speedrun tech or prior knowledge required for the others.

We know a few concrete things about Rebirth's sales:
It's selling about half as much as much as Remake.
Kitase said that it's sales aren't anything to worry about, BUT, they won't be shipping their games with console exclusivity anymore. It's just not a viable option.
So they're going to be crunching down that third game for 2witch for sure. Whatever dev costs a Sony deal might have covered for them isn't worth a complete lack of domestic presence and half the install base of the PS4.
If the game's safe despite only having half the sales of the original it might cost less than anyone assumed- they did manage to almost completely retain the staff of the first game. 85% if I remember correctly. It's a remake and a sequel at the same time so preproduction would have been incredibly fast and dirt cheap. Kitase could have been talking out of his ass so investors don't get scared but if he's telling the truth I have to imagine they just have their shit together in a way that few teams do.

Maybe I just didn’t use it as much as I thought, but Merchant didn’t feel that broken economy wise in Metaphor? I was pretty consistently draining my funds on gear and never felt like I outpaced the economy for the entire game, only had like 15k when doing the final boss
I am lowkey pissed Kris didnt walk into podcast saying that YiiK i.v is a great game like a wrestlemania character and got punched by Dan in a cage match.
Granted, if we are talking srs, I get that Dan does NOT have the energy or desire to have that conversation, but looking back and listening to how Kris was apparently (I heard someone say that) calling someone names on stream for saying that whole irl thing in YiiK with irl woman's death was actually a normal thing to do, I would watch a talk on it.
