'Toothless' Leopards and 'battered' Abrams: Russian TV mocks Nato tanks promised to Ukraine

- Russian state TV reacted with acerbic putdowns on Wednesday to the news that the US and Germany had finally agreed to send tanks to Ukraine.

The Rossiya-24 TV channel broadcast a series of stories mocking the Nato member countries' tanks. In one on-air sequence titled 'Toothless cats' - a pun on the German-made Leopard tanks - the presenter said the German-made tanks were 'more primitive', heavier, less manoeuvrable and had a shorter firing range when compared to Russian T-90s.
In an on-screen graphic showing a fictional battle between T-90 and Leopard tanks, the news anchor said that half of the Nato platoon would be hit before it even reached the battlefield. Another withering sequence called the US-made tanks 'battered Abrams', showing footage of the armoured vehicles being struck in a number of past battles and highlighting their 'weak points' on a blueprint.

Tank to Tank battle didn't happen when those leopards and bradleys got destroyed like the Russians is showing here , they were decimated by Artillery,ATGM, and Mines. Tank to tank battles in Ukraine are rare.
I like how the “flaws” of the Abrams were actually purposely designed for the tank to try to keep the crew safer, like moving the ammo to the back instead of keeping it in the front

@@Budanevey Not sudden at all, they've been asking for all types of equipment since the beginning of the war and getting it, but and only now has the UK, US agreed to supply tanks and more importantly Germany who control the movement of the 2,000 Leopards in Germany and other countries. Russia has lost a lot of tanks and so also has Ukraine but Russia has 10,000 tanks, albeit most are old and inferior to Abrams, Leopard and Challenger. Ukraine had 900 and are reckoned to have captured hundreds more, but they're all Russian and old and inferior as said.

@@Silver_Prussian if a Russian tanks ammo explodes the turret blows off and the crew die, the tank is taken out of the war. If a western tanks ammo explodes its isolated, the tank may be incapacitated but the crew are unharmed and the tank can be repaired quickly and returned to the front and potentially repeat the entire series of events over and over with a single crew. That's aside from the overall armour and targeting advantage western tanks hold over their Russian counterparts and the ability of western IFVs to take out Russian tanks. Ukraine are going to eat Russias stockpiles using a fraction of what the west is capable of producing

One point to be made though about the gulf war engagements, the Iraqis never possessed the best apfsds rounds for their T-72s. The ammunition they had was an old inferior export round that the Russians themselves knew didn't have the ability to pen modern western tanks.
Also worth noting, the Abrams has never faced an adversary with modern ATGM's such as Russia possesses. Unfortunately I don't thing the M1 will replicate it's successes in the gulf wars etc in Ukraine.

I am not sure if they even have 10 t-90ms at this point.
It is alleged they may have 30 to 40, but some of these are little more than prototypes in various stages of modification etc. The T14 has suffered several reliability issues, and it would be a surprise if it was anywhere close to being combat ready. Still, if they want to send 'em........

I wouldn't ask Russian "experts" regarding the durability of tanks after seeing their "indestructible" ones
Remember what happened the last time Russian tanks went up against the M1 Abrams tanks? The Iraq war. And during that war every Russian T-72 tank in the Iraq army that went up against the M1 Abrams was decimated and not a single Abrams tank was destroyed by the Iraqi’s T-72 tanks. The M1 Abrams was superior over the Russian tanks back then and have been improved since then. It’s hard to imagine to today’s Russian tanks fairing much better against today’s Abrams tanks when Russia is still using a lot of the same T-72 tanks as back then, which makes up a large majority of Russia’s Tank forces. Even Russia’s most modern tank currently in service, the T-90, still inherits the same weaknesses as the T-72, and that is already a disadvantage for it if it were to come across face to face with an M1 Abrams
The Abrahams and Leopard may also be superior, but when you have only a few dozens (and NOT hundreds) they will hardly make a measurable difference. And why the USA will manufacture from scratch the 31 tanks promised to Ukraine, when they have thousands in stock? To me it seems they want to lose time on purpose. They say to Russia they will not abandon Ukraine, but have one foot on the accelerator, and the other on the brake. USA and Germany are engaged in a race to who will give the least tanks and as late as possible!
In WW2 the German tanks were far superior to their American counterparts, but on the western front there were 10 Shermans for 1 German panzer.
it is different today because neither side could achieve air-superiority because there's too many anti-air weapon. Air-support and infantry is needed to protect tank.

Ask Iraqi tank crews using Russian/Soviet tanks just how lethal Abrams is - might have difficulty find those crews because they were dispatched with their tanks within seconds of contact.

Iraqi tank crews were poorly trained and were going up not just against better trained US tank battalions but also US air superiority, artillery support and infantry. Just look how poorly the Abram and Leopard tanks performed in the Saudi invasion of Yemen only a few years ago against Houthi rebels who had nothing but Soviet era RPGs and AK-47's. There are graveyards of destroyed Abrams and Leopards in Yemen.

The longest ever confirmed tank to tank destruction was 2km by a Challenger 2 tank during the Gulf War. Destroying 50% of the tanks prior to even 2.5km is so incredibly unlikely it’s negligible..
First it was a Challenger 1 since the Challenger 2 got invented into the military in 1994. Second it was 4.1km and not 2km.

Most tanks have weak rear armour and weaknesses between the turret and main hull. Only fixed turret tanks do not suffer from this.

@@PepRex yeah allegedly in Iraq a Challenger 2 took 70 rpg rounds of damage and yet it was still 70% operationable & put back into full service the next day.
With tanks like those described above its a wonder why the Russians are currently getting a pasting in Ukraine and aren't half way to Berlin at this stage of the war.
