Excellent video! Picked up this game a little while ago. Played the tutorials, but I don't recall the part about making money from missions. Very, very brief introduction into salvage and mining, but that was it. I remember being told how to surf through the menus, all the while rebinding controls for my controller. I really want to enjoy this game, so I'm taking it slowly, and learning what I can first before jumping headlong into disaster. My fear for that came from the frustratingly brutal Elite: Dangerous learning curve...

Great video MYSH, thank you. I played this game when it first came out and again maybe 2 years after that but i bounced off after just 1 or 2 hours both times. This time it seems I'm really enjoying it thanks to videos like yours 👍
Thanks a lot, this explained everything really well. I figure out some things by myself with next to zero guidance when I started yesterday, but couldn't find missions, and didn't know the docking computer was *actually* good (I come from Elite Dangerous where it's just slow and not worth the space in your ship). This is the kind of content that should honestly be featured by the devs to help new players, it would really expand how many people play this game.
Thanks for the nice feedback! :) The devs just retweeted my video and shared it here on TH-cam. And yes, the docking computer is actually good. It's some kind of X-universe trope already because even the first game had this gadget. Without it docking always takes up way too much time - guess it's working as intended.
@@WatchMysh Is it possible that no missions spawn initially? I just did the highway loop and I see none of those yellow icons anywhere. I was eyeing the map as I was zooming and nothing at all.
@@metalsynkk Weird. I always see them. Another guy wrote a comment here about the same issue and he solved it by removing some filters. Maybe check your map filter settings? Perhaps the problem lies there :) Also check the mission offers list on the left. All missions pop up there, too.

Anyhows, thanks again for the video, helped out a lot! Gonna mess around some more, it's hella fun albeit sometimes still confusing.
Also only got 1 mission my entire fly thru that disappeared by the time I finished all the jump Gates. Also noticed since I use the Shift-Space fly mode, that any time I moved my mouse while on a highway it would drop me off of it, took me time to figure out to disable this while on highways, especially when alt-tabbing out of the game. The maintaining speed while in menus which is showed at the end of the video was super helpful, wish it was mentioned prior to highway jumping would have made things easier.
X4 is such an underrated game. Yes, there's a bit of a learning curve initially to get started with the basics, but it's over quickly & then it's the deepest game you'll ever play. Thanks for covering those basics here.
I figured that since pulse lasers were the cheapest starter weapon that you obviously had to upgrade to a new weapon immediately. Pulse laser remains my go-to all around weapon for most ships after thousands of hours in the game. Its more like a "baseline" weapon than a "starter" weapon.
@@WatchMysh Yep, their accuracy makes them so dependable. No "RNG" required for projectile hits depending on speed, accuracy etc. Pulse lasers though, they just.... Work

I been trying to get into the game three times , and everytime I tried I failed because I didn't understand what the actual f**k I'm supposed to do. This video really helps , thank you.
Could you go into more detail about the controls or upload your control profile? I am having a lot of trouble finding some of the keybindings you're talking about.
Thanks for the video! I thought I was having a stroke for about 15 seconds while looking for this "arrow key next to the left shift key" when you mentioned it before I remembered different layouts are a thing xD.
If you enter comms on the another ship and then fly behind it, if there are any Windows you can see your ship behind the person you're talking to Very cool
A great beginners course. Helps on returning to the game too. Only one caveat... left handed players do not all use wsad. Personally i have to map all controls with my left hand using the numeric keypad. Up down left right is mapped to numbers 4,8,5,6 with all other keyboard mappings bound to the left of the keyboard. This is my standard wsad.
1:22 I like how so much effort was made to raise the attention to the newer more new player friendly starts and hide the less new player friendly sandbox starts. Oh well. 😆
3:49 You have one odd keyboard if you have that key next to left shift and if you have letter Y where the video shows. I understand some keyboard layouts are different for other countries, but I have never seen one with a Y down there. I thought they were still considered QWERTY keyboard layouts. Perhaps I am mistaken. Long story short, on an American keyboard, that key is the letter Z.
Short and to the point, as a guide should be. I gave up on the in-game tutorials as they kept bugging out, and after the 4th restart I just had enough.
X4 was on sale today and this helped a lot, thanks. I did the initial tutorials, but the first one took 3 tries to get used to the flight mechanics lol. I think Spacebourne has better space combat; though this game felt kind of similar.
Hi and thanks! :) X4 is more of a strategy game than a space combat sim. But you can try to get into some different styles like boom and zoom in decoupled mode with splil mk4 engines.
7 hours in, and I had a helluva time finding any missions. I found a few I could do, but some were utter BS that destroyed my ship the moment I get near. If you get a mission that says to destroy a mine, don't use auto pilot, fly in and drop out a few kilometers away, then slowly approach until the ?'s turn into something legible for you to target. I also didn't like the fact, that there is no story to follow, it just plops you in a station expecting you to know WTF to do lol. Doing the tutorials and this video helped. Once I started scouting around, 2 enemy ships caught up with me, even though I was in travel mode, and destroyed my ship. Time to quit for the day lol.
I played the first X game 20 years ago, thought I would give X4 a try, but I am totally overwhelmed, the UI is so complicated. I bought the Boron DLC and started as a Boron as I always loved them. But during the first mission, It took me 9 hours to find out that I had to discover a missing gate connection in Watchful Gaze. So stupid, I swear the mission did not state that. Being totally new to X4 I have spent 20 hours playing and have pretty much the same amount of money and the starting ship. I am therefore very grateful for this series, now on the next video!
I wish space games would use a wheel menu instead of having tons of controls. So instead of pressing shift+ x, y or z, just hold 1 button and select what you want to do. It could save the player from memorizing tons of keys. And I'm talking about using this as an alternate option, not something that is forced. Great tutorial, very helpful.
@@WatchMysh btw I have to say that I haven't seen a more annoying menu system than what these idiots put together for their game... Starting with the fact that you have to double click everything in the menu, followed by the missing 'reset to default' button... But what's more annoying than that is the fact that one can't bind mouse scroll to decelerate and accelerate at the same time along with not being able to bind left mouse button to anything, because the game thinks that I'm clicking something in the menu instead of registering it.
Past two saves i've gone for Untested Explorer, It's slow going indeed but wouldn't have it any other way. =] In regards to hotkeys, i only change one, i bind the e-brake from Backspace over to the 'tilde' above the 'tab' key, so full throttle and brake are not opposite sides of the keyboard.
Happiness is building your first Asgard and planting it (with an Osaka support squadron) at the incoming gate from a Xen sector to watch it eat K's all day long... then start a scrap business and farm those annoying ai's for profit. As for key binding... I bind the easy to use buttons for combat where speed is needed. I have that side key set to "match target speed" rather than zero. I found that very handy in a fight since the new enemy attack patterns have a lot of speed changes. T for get closest target and R is set to fire primary because the mouse wheel is not great for pressing. Key with X4 if you're a noob is to get in and start playing, avoid combat for a while because you can die fast early on and build some piloting and maneuvering skills either through exploration (if you have a fast ship) or mining/trading. Follow the mission line for your start for a while to give you some goals... and learn the complex UI. Once you know you're way around the UI you'll be ready to start tackling more complex activities.
Ok clearly the Xenon are monitoring youtube... I post about farming Xenon and they turn around and send an I, 6 K's and about a million S's and M's against that gate fleet. I'd not lost a L yet but lost 4 Behemoths before I realized they were attacking and teleported into the Asgard to use the main guns on them. (for some reason the AI captains don't use the main guns... very odd).
Corrections:
- "Throttle to zero" is called "stop engines" in the control settings
- The strange keyboard is my german layout
Hey, can you tell wthat are the other settings, like "scroll to speed"? in the settings menu ?

Thanks
Thank you so much for this! You really helped me come to grips with this game, and man is it an exceptional game!
You're welcome! :)
Great tutorial! I`ve played all the notable Space games of the last 2 decades, but I`ve enjoyed X4 Foundations far more than anything else... its the best of them all, by far.
I'm still new to it but I found out familiar since I play elite a lot. Though personally I prefer elite
@@Andromedon777 I just discovered this mod today X4: Star Wars 0.66 Submod (th-cam.com/video/ZsJCu5EL7mo/w-d-xo.html)... its playable in its current state, but lots of features still to be added. Very excited about giving it a try next week.
Thanks so much for this beginners guide! i made a slight modification for those using a US keyboard, we don't have that little arrow key that you have so i just used the tilda key for mouse look.
Thank you so much , for having a high def tutorial . Much Appreciated , and very rare.👍
Thank you very much MYSH. I've come for the WT content but the X series is something I've also always wanted to get into. Hope I'll get X4 and its dlcs in the summer sales.
You're welcome! :) I'll do some more WT related content soon-ish™ - but I guess most you folks like games from the whole "sim-sphere", too. Like X4, DCS, UBOAT and so on.
@@WatchMysh Oh my will you also be making an Uboat series in the future? looking forward to it.
@@ayuvir I did the zero to seawolf video - but that's hopefully just the beginning. I hope at least that I'll have enough time in the future to do more Uboaty content.
Bought the game because of this video. Was worried about the learning curve but you make the game interesting to learn! Looking forward to the space adventure :D Thank you
You're welcome! Once you get the basics down and the game opens up you'll have a blast. :)
I have more than 600 hours in the game, but you have a lot of new good things to say, thank you very much!
Happy to help :)
THIS is how you do a tutorial. Intuitive, no fat, no flim flam. Just useable info. Thanks!
I been trying to get into the game three times , and everytime I tried I failed because I didn't understand what the actual f**k I'm supposed to do.
This video really helps , thank you.
Great Tutorial!! And also thanks for not fooling around like most other guys in the other X4 guide videos 👍
Thanks! :) More X4 content incoming with the upcoming dlc.
@@WatchMysh Great thanks! Really looking forward to that :)
Could you go into more detail about the controls or upload your control profile? I am having a lot of trouble finding some of the keybindings you're talking about.
This is an excellent tutorial! Thank you so much.
You're welcome :)
Thanks for the video! I thought I was having a stroke for about 15 seconds while looking for this "arrow key next to the left shift key" when you mentioned it before I remembered different layouts are a thing xD.
@@Falsechicken lol yes it's my german kb layout
If you enter comms on the another ship and then fly behind it, if there are any Windows you can see your ship behind the person you're talking to
Very cool
That was the best tutorial that i've ever seen online. You did everything perfectly. Holy crap was that a hard topic but you totally nailed it my guy
Thanks! Happy to help! But there's still a lot of room to improve. :)
Thank you for helping me digest this sir.
You're welcome :)
Just picked this up in the sale. "I will not watch YT, I'm going to learn on my own". 5 hours of game play and here I am !!
@@sidvanhound lol. Welcome :) If you have any questions, just ask away.
Great guide for beginners like me. Thanks!
You're welcome! :) If you have any questions just ask. I also have 3 follow-up guides to this one if you didn't already notice.
Excellent starter guide - concise and thorough
Thanks :)
Oh well. 😆
Thanks for the tutorial. I just got the game and had no idea how to do things other than what the tutorial showed me.
Happy to help
Wonderful tutorial. Thank you.
i was banging my head on how to buy ships and stuff, thanks mate now i know.
very nice guide especially suited for occasionally players (but not only those...) thanks a lot!
Happy to help! Thanks! :)
I was really confused by the UI of the game, might give it a chance again after these tutorials! Thanks!
Thank you! I finally mustered the currage to tackle this game.
This combat looks really cool.
Absolutly fantastic guide!!!! Liked and sub!!!
@@bryangrossman Thanks! Welcome aboard! :)
I've had this game for 4 years and never really played it because of how confusing it is. I really needed this.
@@PlanetShowsGames hope it helped! :)
It's a German layout
Short and to the point, as a guide should be. I gave up on the in-game tutorials as they kept bugging out, and after the 4th restart I just had enough.
Thanks :) That was the goal: get people into the game as fast and easy as possible.
Followed the steps, then picked up a mine clearing mission. i immediately got obliterated by seeking mines. (flew too close)
Standard new player experience. Even happened to me while recording for this video as I didn't pay attention lol
Thanks :)
Helpful! Time to learn this damn game (been meaning to bite into it for ages).
Happy to help. Hf! :) It's great once you know your way around.
Very good guide!
Thanks :)
Excellent instructions on how to get accustomed to the game was easy to understand. Outstanding work.
Thank you :)
Firing with middle mouse button... madness!
:D Efficiency!
@@SolantisA I'm so used to all this that I don't even notice the double clicking anymore 🙈 Doesn't make any sense at all...
Fantastic video
this should be included straight into the game
thx m8!
Excellent video!
Thanks :)
I'm so glad to see more X4 videos. This game is an undiscovered/underappreciated gem worthy of hundreds if not thousands of hours of play.
More are coming up :)
yes for sure, I remember spending sooo much time on X Beyond the Frontier
Very helpful, thanks! 🙏
@@timothyporr you're welcome :)
Awesome vid bud 👍 super excited to get started :)
Thanks :) Let's gooo
Past two saves i've gone for Untested Explorer, It's slow going indeed but wouldn't have it any other way. =]
In regards to hotkeys, i only change one, i bind the e-brake from Backspace over to the 'tilde' above the 'tab' key, so full throttle and brake are not opposite sides of the keyboard.
(for some reason the AI captains don't use the main guns... very odd).
