Setting up Machine Disallowed Areas in Cura to work with IDEX Mirror / Duplication Modes for Duet

  • Rather than guesstimating model locations in Cura for mirror or duplication prints, as well as worry about post processing the GCODE to ensure the correct RepRapFirmware tool is selected, I created a true Cura printer profile, included "machine_disallowed_areas" with an IF evaluation based on the number of active extruders to split the build plate in half.

This video is an enormous help, thank you friend. I was wondering if you could go a little more into the conditional in your .json file? (i.e. - which variables equate to each tool disallowed areas). Thanks in advance!

Is this running on main cura or a fork?

I'm pretty new to 3D printing so a lot of this went over my head. I recently got a Flashforge Creator Pro 2 with IDEX so I could do batch printing. In their Flashprint slicer it looks like they have about a 10mm disallowed area running down the middle of the build plate in mirror and duplicate mode. The issue I'm having is that even if I lay my models out right up to this disallowed strip down the middle, when it comes to actually printing the gap I have is over 30mm which is a huge chunk when the build plate is only 200mm wide. I can totally understand this in mirror mode so the extruders don't interfere in the middle but in duplicate mode the extruders remain the same distance apart the whole time. Is this issue more likely due to using Flashprint and if so, what software would you recommend that works well with idex printers? Thanks

Hey Stuart, thanks for the comment! I just took a quick look at Flashprint.... unsure at how 'locked down' that would be. I do enjoy using Cura, and I think you may be able to find enough information out there from other Flashforge users to get you started with a Creator Pro profile. Regarding IDEX capabilities on the Creator Pro 2 - could you provide me an example mirror and duplication print file? That is mainly for me to take a look at the 'preamble' GCODE, and decipher how the machine preps the two nozzles.
In my opinion, slicers seriously lag behind the mechanical capabilities of printers today. Take a look at tool changing printers (Jubilee, e3d), IDEX, or even printers that can print in full color - slicers do not do a good job of working with the advanced capabilities of these machines. Too often the slicers are developed and used by those with experience in single extrusion only.

@@jaredwebber Did you ever get your hands on the Creator Pro 2 preamble? I'd be interested in seeing that as well.
